द्वन्द्वानि नाविदच्चापि आत्मभूतान्तरं विना
He did not perceive the pairs of opposites, nor any other being apart from himself.
तत्तेजसा वृतं सर्वं तदा दृष्ट्वा वसुन्धरे 146.
Then, seeing the earth enveloped entirely by that radiance—
सन्निरुद्धेन्द्रियग्रामा नाचक्षत बहिःस्थितम्
With the group of senses restrained, he did not see anything existing outside.
स्थितोऽहं वसुधे देवि अक्ष्णोः प्रत्यक्षतां गतः
O Earth, O goddess, I stood there, manifest before his very eyes.
हृषीकेश इति ख्यातो नाम्ना तत्रैव संस्थितः
There, I became known by the name Hṛṣīkeśa, established in that very place.
बहिः स्थितं च मां दृष्ट्वा प्रणनाम कृताञ्जलिः
Seeing me standing outside, he bowed down with joined palms.
रोमांचिततनुश्चासीत्कदम्बमुकुलाकृतिः
Her body became thrilled, resembling the buds of the kadamba tree.
अयि बाले विशालाक्षि तुष्टोऽहं तपसस्तव
O young maiden with wide eyes, I am pleased with your austerity.
अदेयमपि ते दद्मि यदन्येषां सुदुर्ल्लभम्
I grant you even that which is not to be given, which is exceedingly rare for others.
स्तुत्वा तं देवदेवेशं प्रबद्धकरसंपुटा
Having praised that Lord of gods, with hands joined in reverence—
दुर्लभं ते वरं दद्मि तपसाहं प्रतोषितः 146.
I grant you a boon that is difficult to obtain, for I am satisfied by your austerity.
यदि प्रसन्नो देवेश तदा मां कुरु पावनीम्
If you are pleased, O Lord of gods, then make me pure.
तामहं देवि सुभगे प्रावोचं पुनरेव हि
O blessed goddess, I spoke to her again as follows:
तव नाम्नां च विख्यातमेतत्क्षेत्रं भविष्यति
By your name, this sacred place will become renowned.
विलोक्य मां भवेत्पूतो मम वाक्यान्न संशयः
By seeing me, one becomes purified—there is no doubt in my words.
यास्यन्ति विलयं क्षिप्रमेवमेतन्न संशयः
They will quickly meet their end—of this there is no doubt.
सापि कालेन सञ्जाता तीर्थभूता तथाऽभवत्
In time, she became a tīrtha, a sacred place.
रुरुक्षेत्रस्य प्रभवमेतद्गुह्यं परं मम
This is the supreme secret of the origin of Ruru Kṣetra.
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे भगवच्छास्त्रे रुरुक्षेत्रऋषीकेशयोर्माहात्म्यं नाम षट्चत्वारिंशदधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred forty-sixth chapter, entitled 'The Glory of Ruru-kshetra and Rishikesh', in the divine scripture of the Shri Varaha Purana.
अथ गोनिष्क्रमणमाहात्म्यम् अत्याश्चर्यं श्रुतं ह्येतद्रुरुक्षेत्रसमुद्भवम्
Now, the greatness of the departure of the cow: This most wondrous event has been heard, originating from Ruru-kshetra.
अन्यच्च यत्परं गुह्यं क्षेत्रं परमपावनम्
Moreover, there is another supreme secret: a field that is supremely pure.
श्रीवराह उवाच गुह्यमस्त्यपरं चैव हिमशृङ्ग शिलोच्चये
Shri Varaha said: There is indeed another secret, upon the snowy peaks and rocky heights.
गोनिष्क्रमणकं नाम गावो यत्र प्रतारिताः
It is called 'the departure of the cow', where the cows were led away.
सप्ततिर्यत्र कल्पानि और्वो यत्र प्रजापतिः
There, for seventy kalpas, Aurva, the lord of creatures, resided.
तस्यैवं वर्त्तमानस्य याति काले महत्तरे
As he thus remained, when a great period of time had passed,
न वरं प्रार्थयत्येष लाभालाभसमन्वितः
He did not seek any boon, being indifferent to gain and loss.
अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य कश्चिद्ब्रह्मयतिस्तदा
Then, after a long time, a certain Brahmayati arrived there.
ईश्वरोऽपि महाभागे तत्पार्श्वं समुपागतः
The Lord also, O exalted one, approached that place.
तत्र त्वौर्वो महाभागे तप्यते समदर्शनः 147.
There, Aurva, O noble one, practiced austerity with equanimity.
तन्निर्गतं ततो ज्ञात्वा और्वं सर्वे तपस्विनः
Having learned that Aurva had departed, all the ascetics
