For more than ten thousand years, then Indra considered—
The Lord, his senses and mind agitated, spoke sweet words—
As I pondered, it is you alone who are the supreme path for me.
Hearing Indra’s words, those winds carrying desire—
Whose mind, even if self-controlled, can we not disturb?
Having received your permission, speak quickly and be happy.
At that very moment, my anxiety vanished when I saw you.
The sage, devoted to Hṛṣīkeśa, was residing on the beautiful snowy mountain.
Surely, desiring to seize my position, you should turn back from this austerity.
Then, led by Kāma, they resolved to set out.
Then the lord of the gods, Śakra, by name, called for Pramlocā.
Go, auspicious lady, and bring victory on earth over the sage.
Enchant him with your graceful and free delights, and bring him under your control.
Do so, and may it be well with you, near Hṛṣīkeśa.
In the delightful nearby grove, thick with various trees and creepers,
Filled with the fragrance of blossoming mango clusters and the essence of nectar,
Blended with the songs of Gandharvas and cooled by the Malaya breeze,
Where, by the sage’s power, all cruelty had been abandoned in the pools and streams,
There, the beautiful-hipped lady entered and sang a very sweet song.
She began a Gandharva song, and the Gandharvas, esteemed by the gods, joined in.
She drew the flowery bow and fitted the arrows.
Hearing that sweet song, charming with its fivefold melody,
Kāma repeatedly drew his bow, tireless.
He wandered through the hermitage, his mind satisfied as he looked around.
Seeing her, whose limbs were lovely, he was pierced by the arrow of desire.
She too, with eyes like a doe, gazed at Devadatta and became attached.
Striking the ball with her hand, her restless eyes charming, she was exceedingly beautiful.
With her graceful, playful gestures, she captivated the mind of that sage.
She wore a fine garment as a lower cloth, adorned with a girdle of gold.
Enchanted, the sage approached her and spoke.
