करिशावैर्गजीभिश्च क्रीडमानो वने वसन्
Dwelling in the forest, he played with young elephants and elephant keepers.
वने विहरतोर्भूमे शापमोहितयोः सतोः
While both, deluded by the curse, roamed the earth together in the forest,
त्रिवेणीमभितो यातोऽवगाहनपरायणः
He approached the Triveṇī, intent on bathing there.
स्वयं च पाययंस्ताश्च चिक्रीड प्रीतमानसः
He himself made them drink and played joyfully with them.
ग्राहः सम्प्रेरितः पूर्वं वैरयोगमनुस्मरन्
The crocodile, previously incited and recalling their old enmity,
ग्राहं विव्याध सोऽप्येनमाकर्षयत तज्जले
Attacked the elephant, and dragged him into those waters.
आकर्षणैश्च बहुभिर्द्दन्तभेदैः परस्परम्
With many tuggings and breaking of tusks, they struggled against each other.
तत्त्वानि पीडितान्यासन्ननेकानि क्षयं ययुः १४४.
Many beings, afflicted by them, perished there.
तेन विज्ञापितो देवो भगवान्भक्तवत्सलः
Then, the god, the blessed one, compassionate to devotees, was appealed to by him.
क्षिप्तं पुनः पुनस्तत्तु शिलाः सङ्घट्टयद्धरे
Again and again, he hurled stones, striking them together in the presence of Hari.
बाहुल्येन बभूवुर्हि तस्मिन्क्षेत्रे परे मम
Because of this, in that place, there came to be many others as well, O dear one.
न सन्देहस्त्वया कार्यस्त्रिवेणीं प्रति सुन्दरि
You should have no doubt concerning the Triveṇī, O beautiful one.
यदा च भरतो राजा पुलस्त्यस्याश्रमान्तिके
And when King Bharata was near the hermitage of Pulastya,
ततःप्रभृति तस्यासीद्भरतेनारतिः स्फुटम्
From that time onward, he had clear aversion toward it because of Bharata.
तैनैव पूजितो यस्माज्जलेश्वर इति स्मृतः
Because he was worshipped in this way, he is remembered as Jaleśvara, the Lord of Water.
शालग्रामे परे क्षेत्रे यदाहं सुभगे स्थितः
When I, O fortunate one, was present in Śālagrāma or another sacred field,
प्रथमं पतितं यत्र तत्र तीर्थं ततोऽभवत्
Wherever the first fell, there a sacred site came to be.
तत्र स्नानेन तेजस्वी सूर्यलोके महीयते १४४.
One who bathes there, radiant, is honored in the realm of the Sun.
भक्तसंरक्षणार्थाय मयाज्ञप्तं सुदर्शनम्
For the protection of devotees, Sudarśana was commanded by me.
एवं तद्वै भ्रमाक्षिप्तं सर्वं चकमयं त्वभूत्
Thus, all of that was scattered by confusion and became entirely covered.
गोधनान्यग्रतः कृत्वा हरिक्षेत्रं जगाम ह
Placing the herds of cows in front, he went to the field of Hari.
यदा नन्दी शूलपाणिर्गोधनेन पुरस्कृतः
When Nandī, holding the trident, was preceded by the herd of cows,
देवानामटनाच्चैव देवाट इति संज्ञितम्
Because the gods wandered there, it became known as Devāṭa.
स शूलपाणिर्देवेशो भक्ताभयविधायकः
That Lord of the gods, holding the trident, grants fearlessness to devotees.
तस्मिन्स्थाने महादेवः सालङ्कायनकस्य हि
In that place, Mahādeva is indeed of the Sālaṅkāyana lineage.
स्वयं चैव महायोगी योगसिद्धिविधायकः
And he himself, the great yogi, bestows the attainment of yoga.
त्रिजटाभ्योऽभवन्धारा स्तिस्रो वै परमाद्भुताः
From the Trijaṭās, three streams arose, truly most wondrous.
एतत्त्रैधारिकं तीर्थं त्रिजटाभ्यः समुत्थितम् १४४.
This three-streamed sacred site emerged from the Trijaṭās.
शालग्रामाभिधे क्षेत्रे हरिशीलनतत्परः
In the field called Śālagrāma, one devoted to worshipping Hari,
तीर्थे त्रिधारे यः स्रात्वा सन्तर्प्य पितृदेवताः
Who, having bathed at the three-streamed site, satisfies the ancestors and gods,
