तथा प्रवृत्ते तुमुलेऽथ युद्धे हतः स राज्ञः सचिवो विसंज्ञः । सहानुगः सर्वबलैरुपेतो जगाम वैवस्वतमन्दिराय ।। ११.
As the tumultuous battle raged, the king's minister was slain and lost consciousness; accompanied by his followers and all his forces, he departed for the abode of Yama.
तस्मिन् हते दुर्जयराजमन्त्रिणि उपाययौ स्वेन बलेन राजा । स दुर्जयः साश्वरथोऽतितीव्रः प्रतापवांस्तैर्मणिजैर्युयोध ।। ११.
With the death of the unconquerable royal minister, the king advanced with his own army; that Durjaya, fierce and splendid with horses and chariots, fought valiantly with those adorned with jewels.
ततस्तस्मिंस्तदा राज्ञो महत्कदनमाबभौ । ततो हेतुप्रहेतृभ्यां श्रुत्वा जामातरं रणे ।। ११.
Then, at that time, a great slaughter befell the king's army; hearing from the cause and the agent about his son-in-law in battle—
युध्यमानं महाबाहुं ततस्त्वाययतुश्चमूः । तस्मिन् बले तु दैत्या ये तान् श्रृणुष्व धरेरितान् ।। ११.
Seeing the mighty-armed son-in-law fighting, the troops advanced; among those forces, hear now of the Daityas who were arrayed for battle.
प्रघसो विघसश्चैव सङ्घसोऽशनिसप्रभः । विद्युत्प्रभः सुघोषश्च उन्मत्ताक्षो भयंकरः ।। ११.
Praghasa, Vighasa, Sanghasa, Ashaniprabha, Vidyutprabha, Sughosha, Unmattaksha, and Bhayankara—
अग्निदन्तोऽग्नितेजाश्च बाहुशक्रः प्रतर्दनः । विराधो भीमकर्मा च विप्रचित्तिस्तथैव च ।। ११.
Agnidanta, Agnitejas, Bahushakra, Pratardana, Viradha, Bhimakarma, and Viprachitti likewise—
एते पञ्चदश श्रेष्ठा असुराः परमायुधाः । अक्षौहिणीपरीवार एकैकोऽत्र पृथक्पृथक् ।। ११.
These fifteen foremost Asuras, armed with supreme weapons, each were accompanied by an Akshauhini, separately arrayed.
महामायास्तु समरे दुर्ज्जयस्य महात्मनः । युयुधुर्मणिजैः सार्द्धं महासैन्यपरिच्छदाः ।। ११.
The great magicians in the army of Durjaya, the mighty soul, fought together with those adorned with jewels, accompanied by vast military divisions.
(सुप्रभः प्रघसं त्वाजौ ताडयामास पञ्चभिः । शरैराशीविषाकारैः प्रतप्तैः पतगैरिव ११.
Suprabha struck Praghasa in battle with five arrows, sharp as venomous serpents, like heated birds.
तप्ततेजास्त्रिभिर्बाणैर्विघसं संप्रविध्यत । संघसं दशभिर्बाणैः सुरश्मिः प्रत्यविध्यत ।। ११.
With three blazing arrows, he pierced Vighasa; with ten arrows, Surashmi struck Sanghasa.
अशनिप्रभं रणेऽविध्यत् पञ्चभिः शुभदर्शनः । विद्युत्प्रभं सुकान्तिस्तु सुघोषं सुन्दरस्तथा ।। ११.
Shubhadarshana struck Ashaniprabha in battle with five arrows; Sukanti struck Vidyutprabha, and Sundara struck Sughosha.
उन्मत्ताक्षं तथाविध्यत् सुन्दः पञ्चभिराशुगैः । चकर्त्त च धनुस्तस्य शितेन नतपर्वणा ।। ११.
Sunda struck Unmattaksha with five swift arrows and cut his bow with a sharp, curved arrow.
सुमना अग्निदंष्ट्रं तु सुशुभश्चाग्नितेजसम् । सुशीलो वायुशक्रं तु सुमुखश्च प्रतर्दनम् ।। ११.
Sumanā struck Agnidaṃṣṭra, Suśubha struck Agnitejas; Suśīla struck Vāyuśakra, and Sumukha struck Pratardana.
(विराधेन तथा शम्भुः सुकीर्तिर्भीमकर्म्मणा । विप्रचित्तिस्तथा सोमं एतद् युद्धं महानभूत् ११.
Shambhu fought with Viradha, Sukīrti with Bhimakarma, Viprachitti with Soma; thus, a great battle took place.
परस्परं सुयुद्धेन योधयित्वाऽस्त्रलाघवात् । यथासंख्येन ते दैत्याः पुनर्मणिभवैर्हताः ।। ११.
Having fought each other with skillful use of weapons, those Daityas, in accordance with their numbers, were again slain by the jewel-born warriors.
यावत् संग्रामघोरो वै महांस्तेषां व्यवर्द्धत । तावत् समित्कुशादीनि कृत्वा गौरमुखो मुनिः ।। ११.
As the fierce battle among them intensified, at that moment, the sage Gauramukha performed rites with samit, kusa grass, and others.
आगतो महदाश्चर्यं संग्रामं भीमदर्शनम् । बहुसैन्यपरीवारं स्थितं तं चापि दुर्ज्जयम् ।। ११.
A great and wondrous battle appeared, terrifying to behold, surrounded by many armies, and that force was indeed difficult to conquer.
तं दृष्ट्वा स मुनिर्द्वारि चिन्तापरम एव हि । उपविश्याधिगम्याथ मणेः कारणमेव ह ।। ११.
Seeing that, the sage stood at the door, absorbed in deep thought, and after sitting down, he discerned the cause of the jewel.
एवं कृत्वा मणिकृतं रौद्रं गाढं च संयुगम् । चिन्तयामास देवेशं हरिं गौरमुखो मुनिः ।। ११.
Having thus made the jewel the source of a fierce and intense conflict, the sage Gauramukha began to contemplate Lord Hari, the Lord of the gods.
स देवः पुरतस्तस्य पीतवासाः खगासनः । किमत्र ते मया कार्यमिति वाणीमुदीरयत् ।। ११.
Then that god, clad in yellow garments and seated upon Garuda, appeared before him and spoke, 'What would you have me do here?'
स ऋषिः प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा उवाच पुरुषोत्तमम् । जहीमं दुर्ज्जयं पापं ससैन्यं परिवारिणम् ।। ११.
The sage, with joined palms, addressed the Supreme Person: 'Destroy this unconquerable and wicked force, along with its army and followers.'
एवमुक्तस्तदा तेन चक्रं ज्वलनसन्निभम् । (मुमोच दुर्जयबले कालचक्रं सुदर्शनम्) ।। ११.
Thus addressed, he released the discus, blazing like fire—he cast the Sudarshana, the wheel of time, upon the mighty and invincible host.
तेन चक्रेण तत्सैन्यमासुरं दौर्जयं क्षणात् । निमेषान्तरमात्रेण भस्मवद् बहुधा कृतम् ।। ११.
By that discus, the demonic army, formidable and hard to defeat, was in a moment—within the blink of an eye—reduced to ashes in many ways.
एवं कृत्वा ततो देवो मुनिं गौरमुखं तदा । उवाच निमिषेणेदं निहतं दानवं बलम् ।। ११.
Having done so, the god then said to the sage Gauramukha, 'In an instant, this force of the Danavas has been destroyed.'
अरण्येऽस्मिंस्ततस्त्वेवं नैमिषारण्यसंज्ञितम् । भविष्यति यथार्थं वै ब्राह्मणानां विशेषतः ।। ११.
Therefore, from this event, this forest will be known as Naimisha-aranya, as it truly is, especially for the Brahmanas.
अहं च यज्ञपुरुष एतस्मिन् वनगोचरे । नाम्ना याज्या सदा चेमे दश पञ्च च नायकाः । कृते युगे भविष्यन्ति राजानो मणिजा मुने ।। ११.
And I, the Lord of Sacrifice, will dwell in this forest; by name, I am always to be worshipped here, and these fifteen leaders—kings of the jewel—will arise in the Krita age, O sage.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो देवो गतोऽन्तर्धानमीश्वरः । द्विजोऽपि स्वाश्रमे तस्थौ मुदा परमया युतः ।। ११.
Having spoken thus, the Lord vanished from sight, and the twice-born sage remained in his hermitage, filled with supreme joy.
श्रीवराह उवाच । ततः पुत्रं रथाङ्गाग्निदग्धं श्रुत्वा नृपोत्तमः । सुप्रतीकः प्रतीतात्मा चिन्तयामास पार्थिवः । तस्य चिन्तयतस्त्वेवं तदा बुद्धिरजायत ।। १२.
Śrī Varāha said: Then, upon hearing that his son had been burned by the fire of the discus, the noble king Supratika, whose mind was steadfast, began to reflect; and as he pondered thus, a thought arose in him.
चित्रकूटे गिरौ विष्णुः सदा रामेति कीर्त्यते । ततोऽहं रामसंज्ञेन नाम्ना स्तौमि जगत्पतिम् ।। १२.
On Mount Citrakūṭa, Viṣṇu is always renowned as Rāma; therefore, I will praise the Lord of the universe by the name Rāma.
सुप्रतीक उवाच । नमामि रामं नरनाथमच्युतं कविं पुराणं त्रिदशारिनाशनम् । शिवस्वरूपं प्रभवं महेश्वरं सदा प्रपन्नार्तिहरं धृतश्रियम् ।। १२.
Supratika said: I bow to Rāma, Lord of men, the infallible one, the ancient sage, destroyer of the enemies of the gods, embodiment of Śiva, the source, the great Lord, ever the remover of the distress of those who take refuge, adorned with splendor.
