On its western side is a secret place, accompanied by the gods.
A man who has fasted for five meals and bathes there—
Then indeed, the great and renowned emperor gives up his breath.
Resorting to the northwestern direction, on that lofty Vindhya peak—
There, one whose mind is fixed on me should perform bathing.
Then here, in that secret place, O illustrious one, he gives up his breath.
By merely calling out there, having taken refuge in the southern direction—
There, a man who has fasted for eight nights should perform bathing.
Then indeed, one established in my prescribed acts gives up the breath.
On its western side is a truly supreme and great secret place.
There, a man who has fasted for a day and night should perform bathing.
Then indeed, one who has completed his own acts gives up the breath.
Hear from me now the description of the circle of this sacred field.
There I stand, O beautiful-hipped one, upon the summit of the Vindhya mountain.
On the right is established the discus, and on the left, indeed, the mace.
The plough and the pestle are present, and the conch stands in front.
Some do not know this, being deluded by my divine power of illusion.
Thus ends the one hundred and forty-third chapter, entitled 'The Description of the Greatness of Mandara,' in the holy Varaha Purana, the scripture of the Blessed Lord.
Now, having heard the glory of Mandara, the earth, desiring righteousness, spoke about the greatness of the fields beginning with the Someśvara and other liṅgas, and the confluence of the three rivers.
The Earth said: O Viṣṇu, you should tell me of the place that is higher than Mandara.
Śrī Varāha said: I shall tell you my secret, known as Śālagrāma.
O Earth, in the Dvāpara age, among the lineage of the Yadus,
His son was most fortunate, devoted to all duties.
And his wife, O Vasudhā, was beautiful in every limb.
In her womb, O blessed one, I shall be born—of this there is no doubt.
After that, when he had departed, the foremost of the Yadava lineage,
For the sake of worshipping me, he wandered in all ten directions.
Then, O Vasundharā, she went to Piṇḍāraka, my sacred field.
Formerly, together with Īśvara, the Lord of all yogis was established there.
Formerly, O Vasundharā, I too was there together with Īśvara.
