न गायनफलं दद्मि ब्रह्मरक्षस्तवेप्सितम्
I do not grant you the fruit of singing that you desire, O Brahma-rakshasa.
श्वपाकवचनं श्रुत्वा राक्षसः पुनरब्रवीत्
Hearing the words of the outcaste, the rakshasa spoke again.
एतेन तारितोऽस्मीति तव गीतफलेन वै
By this, I have been delivered—by the fruit of your singing.
उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं चाण्डालो विस्मयान्वितः
The outcaste, filled with wonder, spoke sweet words.
कर्मणो यस्य दोषेण राक्षसत्वं समागतः
By the fault of his actions, he attained the state of a rakshasa.
सूत्रमन्त्रपरिभ्रष्टो यज्ञकर्मसु निष्ठितः 139.
Having fallen from the thread-mantra, yet established in sacrificial rites.
प्रवर्तमाने यज्ञे तु कदाचिद्दैवयोगतः
Once, while the sacrifice was underway, by the influence of fate,
अथ पञ्चमहारात्रे ह्यसमाप्ते क्रतौ तथा
Then, on the fifth night, while the rite was still incomplete,
राक्षसत्वमनुप्राप्तस्तेन दुष्टेन कर्मणा
Because of that wicked deed, I attained the state of a rakshasa.
सूत्रहीनं तथा तत्र प्राग्वंशादि कृतं मया
There, lacking the proper thread, I performed the ancestral rites.
कृतस्य तस्य दोषेण योनिं प्राप्तोऽस्मि राक्षसीम्
Because of the fault in that act, I was born in a rakshasa womb.
बाढमित्येव तद्वाक्यं राक्षसं प्राब्रवीत्तदा
‘So be it,’ the rakshasa then replied to those words.
ददामि राक्षस त्वं चेन्मुच्यसे शुद्धमानसः
‘I grant it, rakshasa, if you are freed with a pure mind.’
स तारयति दुर्गाणीत्युक्त्वा तद्दत्तवान् फलम्
Saying, ‘He delivers from hardships,’ he granted that boon.
जातः सुविमलो भद्रे शरदीव यथा शशी 139.
He was born pure and spotless, O blessed one, like the autumn moon.
कृत्वा सुविपुलं कर्म स ब्रह्मत्वमुपागतः
Having performed great deeds, he attained the state of Brahma.
मह्यं जागरतो भद्रे गीयमानं मनस्विनि
To me, while awake, O wise one, it was sung.
सर्वसंगं परित्यज्य मम लोकं स गच्छति
Abandoning all attachments, he attains my world.
सर्वसंगात्प्रमुक्तो वै मम लोकं स गच्छति
Freed from all attachments, he goes to my world.
यस्य गीतस्य शब्देन तरेत्संसारसागरम्
By the sound of whose song one crosses the ocean of worldly existence.
प्राप्तवान्मानुषो येन देवेभ्यः सबलां स्वयम्
By whom, as a human, the assembly of gods was conquered by his own power.
नववर्षसहस्राणि नववर्षशतानि च
For nine thousand years and nine hundred years,
कुबेरभवनाद्भ्रष्टः स्वच्छन्दगमनालयः
He fell from Kubera’s abode, free to go as he wished.
नृत्यमानस्य वक्ष्यामि तच्छृणुष्व वसुन्धरे।. मानवो येन गच्छेत्तु च्छित्त्वा संसारबन्धनम्
I will tell you, O Earth, as he was dancing—listen: by which a man, cutting the bonds of worldly existence, may go.
त्रिंशद्वर्षसहस्राणि त्रिंशद्वर्षशतानि च 139.
Thirty thousand years, and thirty hundred years as well,
फलं प्राप्नोति सुश्रोणि मम कर्मपरायणः
is the reward, O fair-hipped one, for one devoted to my actions.
मद्भक्तश्चैव जायेत संसारपरिमोचितः
He is born as my devotee, freed from the bonds of worldly existence.
जम्बूद्वीपं समासाद्य राजराजस्तु जायते
Having attained Jambudvīpa, he is born as a king of kings.
मद्भक्तश्चैव जायेत मम कर्मपरायणः
He is born as my devotee, devoted to my actions.
यो मामुपनयेद्भूमे मम कर्मपथे स्थितः
Whoever leads me, O Earth, remaining on the path of my actions,
