Do as is proper: let wealth be given to friends.
There are beautiful maidens of good family and of your own caste.
If you wish, dear son, to perform other sacrifices again—
There are eight hundred ploughs, each complete with a pair of oxen.
As long as you wish to satisfy the twice-born with food, having fulfilled their hunger,
Hearing the words of his father and mother, that boy, endowed with righteousness,
I have no concern with giving cows, nor do I worry about friends,
I do not desire trade, nor agriculture or tending cattle,
There is only one supreme thought for me: my wish is to pursue austerity,
Then, having heard the words of their son, both devoted to their duties,
Now, twelve years have passed since your birth, dear son,
When you attain that age, you will consider what is auspicious for you,
What is this thought, child, regarding the journey to the boar?
You still call me 'mother' today; how has this been considered?
No offense arises, son, even in the houses of fields,
Even when angry, for the sake of fear, a stick is taken up,
Thus, hearing his mother's words, the delight of the merchant family,
I have dwelt in those limbs, having arisen in the womb as an embryo,
These two breasts I have indeed sucked, gently and playfully,
Mother, please show compassion to me, as is fitting,
Some come and go again, others depart and yet others arrive,
From where was one born, to whom is one bound, who is mother or father?
Thousands of mothers and fathers, and hundreds of sons and wives—
Having such thoughts, do not grieve at any time, O mother.
Ah, indeed, what is this great secret? Father, let it be told.
He spoke sweet words to his mother and also to his father.
Let this secret regarding the Saukarava be asked by both of you.
Having reached the holy place of the Sun, whatever you ask, O father—
Having made a resolve to go, then, regarding the Saukarava—
He went, the lotus-eyed lord of the Ābhīras.
