तत्र गोप्यं किमस्तीति येन ते परिवेदना 137.

What is there to be concealed in this matter, that you are troubled?

प्राश्नासि पिशितान्नं च प्रावारान्भूषणानि च

You consume flesh, cooked food, as well as garments and ornaments.

गच्छस्यनारतं राजन् किं स्थितं च मया विना 137.

You go ceaselessly, O king; what remains when I am not with you?

प्रत्युवाच प्रियं वाक्यं राजानं धर्मवादिनम् 137.

He replied with loving words to the king who spoke of righteousness.

समं महिष्या चाचम्य क्षणं विश्रम्य पार्थिवः 137.

Together with his queen, the king sipped water, rested for a moment.

उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं पुत्रं पुत्रवतां वरः 137.

The best among fathers spoke sweet words to his son.

ततः पितुर्वचः श्रुत्वा राजपुत्रो यशस्विनि 137.

Then, having heard his father's words, the illustrious prince—

एवं गच्छति काले तु तयोस्तत्र वसुन्धरे 137.

As time passed in this way, the two of them remained there, O Earth.

एह्येहि नाथ गच्छावः पश्य गोप्यं मनीषितम् 137.

Come, come, Lord, let us go; see the secret intent.

तत्रैव मरणं प्रापुः सर्वसंगविवर्जिताः 137.

There itself they attained death, free from all attachments.

सर्वसङ्गं परित्यज्य मद्भक्तश्चैव जायते 137.

Abandoning all attachments, one becomes my devotee.

श्वेतद्वीपं ततः प्राप्तौ जानीहि त्वं वसुन्धरे 137.

Then they reached Śvetadvīpa; know this, O Earth.

ततस्तुष्टोऽस्म्यहं भद्रे सूर्यस्य सुमहौजसः

Then I am pleased, O blessed one, with the greatly radiant Sun.

पुण्यं सौकरवे कृत्वा सुदुष्करतरं महत् 137.

Having performed the meritorious and supremely difficult act of the Boar incarnation.

इति श्रीवराहपुराणे भगवच्छास्त्रे तीर्थमाहात्म्ये सौकरवे गृध्रजम्बूकाख्याने आदित्यवरप्रदानादिकं नाम सप्तत्रिंशदधिकशततमोऽध्यायः

Thus ends the one hundred thirty-seventh chapter, entitled 'The Granting of the Sun’s Boon and the Story of the Vulture and the Jackal,' in the holy Varāha Purāṇa, in the section on the greatness of the holy places, in the discourse of the Boar.

अथ खंजरीटोपाख्यानम् एतत्पुण्यतमं श्रुत्वा रम्ये सौकरवे तदा

Now begins the tale of the Khañjarīṭa bird; having heard this most sacred story in the beautiful Saukarava region at that time—

ततः कमलपत्राक्षी सर्वधर्मविदां वरा

Then the lotus-eyed lady, foremost among those who know all dharma—

पुनः पप्रच्छ तं देवं विस्मयाविष्टमानसा

Again questioned that god, her mind filled with wonder.

अकामान्म्रियमाणस्य मानुषत्वमजायत

Without desire, at the time of death, one attains human birth.

शृण्वन्त्या मे महज्जातं चित्ते कौतूहलं परम्

As I listen, a great and supreme curiosity has arisen in my heart.

नृत्यतः कि भवेत्पुण्यं जाग्रतो वा फलं नु किम्

What merit arises from dancing, or what is the fruit of remaining awake?

संमार्जने लेपने वा गन्धपुष्पादिदानतः

From sweeping, smearing, or offering fragrance and flowers—

अन्येन कर्मणा चैव जपयज्ञादिनाऽथवा

Or by any other act, or by recitation, sacrifice, and the like—

उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं धर्मकामां वसुन्धराम् शृणु सुन्दरि तत्त्वेन यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ।। 138.

He spoke sweet words to Earth, who desired righteousness: 'Listen, beautiful one, to the truth of what you ask me.'

सर्वं ते कथयिष्यामि पुण्यकर्म सुखावहम्

I shall tell you everything, all meritorious deeds that bring happiness.

बहून् भुक्त्वा हि वसुधे अजीर्णभृशपीडितः

After consuming many things, he was greatly afflicted by indigestion, O Earth.

सम्प्राप्तास्तत्र वै बालाः क्रीडन्तस्तं मृतं खगम्

At that place, some children arrived, and while playing, they found that dead bird.

ममायं वै ममायं वै जिघृक्षन्तः परस्परम

Saying, 'This is mine! This is mine!' they each tried to seize it from one another.

तत एको गृहीत्वैनं गङ्गाम्भसि समाक्षिपत्

Then one of them took it and threw it into the waters of the Ganga.
