आदाय स्वगृहं यातस्तेन राज्ञातिमानितः
He took and brought them to his own house, honored by the king.
अव्युच्छिन्नाऽभवत्प्रीती रोहिणीचंद्रयोरिव
Their affection remained unbroken, like that of Rohini and the Moon.
वने चोपवने चैव ये केचिन्नन्दनोपमाः
In the forest and in the gardens, all were like Nandana.
नष्टं मन्येत चात्मानं राजपुत्री यशस्विनि
The illustrious princess would consider herself lost.
आत्मानं मन्यते प्रीत्या नष्टप्रायं वसुन्धरे 137.
Out of affection, the earth would consider herself nearly lost.
नान्तरं पश्यते कश्चित् पुरुषः पुण्यकर्मणोः
No one perceives any difference between those two virtuous ones.
कलिंगस्तोषयामास पौरान्जानपदांस्तथा
The Kaliṅga prince pleased the citizens and the people of the land.
ताभ्यां सन्तोषिताः सर्वाः शीलेन स्वगुणैस्तथा
All were satisfied by them, by their character and their own virtues.
रमते तत्र चान्योन्यं शचीवासवयोरिव
They delighted in each other there, like Śacī and Indra.
व्यजिज्ञपद्राजसुतं सौहृदेन यशस्विनी
The illustrious princess revealed her heart to the prince out of friendship.
मम स्नेहात्प्रियं चैव तद्भवान्वक्तुमर्हति
Out of affection for me, and because it is dear, you ought to speak of it.
उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणः
He, whose eyes resembled lotus petals, spoke sweet words.
सर्वं ते कथयिष्यामि शपे सत्येन सुन्दरि
I will tell you everything, O beautiful one; I swear by truth.
तस्य मूलं तपो राज्ञि राज्यं सत्ये प्रतिष्ठितम्
The root of that, O queen, is austerity; the kingdom is established in truth.
न मिथ्या पूर्वमुक्तं मे ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते 137.
I have never spoken falsely before; tell me, what shall I do for you?
अथवा परमग्र्यं तु पट्टबन्धं करोमि ते
Or else, I will perform for you the supreme and excellent coronation.
सुप्ता नैव च द्रष्टव्या व्रतमेतन्मुहूर्त्तकम्
One who is asleep must not be seen; this vow lasts but a moment.
कृत्वा निष्कण्टकं राज्यं दत्त्वा पंचत्वमागतः 137.
Having made the kingdom free from thorns and handed it over, he departed to the fifth state.
मनुना वै कृतो धर्म एष नैव न दृश्यते 137.
This dharma was indeed established by Manu; it is not seen otherwise.
यत्तदा चिन्तितं पूर्वं द्रष्टुकामेन तां प्रियाम् 137.
That which was previously contemplated, desiring to see his beloved—
अन्यायेन व्रतं चीर्णं सर्वतो विकृतं भवेत् 137.
A vow performed unjustly becomes entirely corrupted.
तत्र गोप्यं किमस्तीति येन ते परिवेदना 137.
What is there to be concealed in this matter, that you are troubled?
प्राश्नासि पिशितान्नं च प्रावारान्भूषणानि च
You consume flesh, cooked food, as well as garments and ornaments.
गच्छस्यनारतं राजन् किं स्थितं च मया विना 137.
You go ceaselessly, O king; what remains when I am not with you?
प्रत्युवाच प्रियं वाक्यं राजानं धर्मवादिनम् 137.
He replied with loving words to the king who spoke of righteousness.
समं महिष्या चाचम्य क्षणं विश्रम्य पार्थिवः 137.
Together with his queen, the king sipped water, rested for a moment.
उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं पुत्रं पुत्रवतां वरः 137.
The best among fathers spoke sweet words to his son.
ततः पितुर्वचः श्रुत्वा राजपुत्रो यशस्विनि 137.
Then, having heard his father's words, the illustrious prince—
एवं गच्छति काले तु तयोस्तत्र वसुन्धरे 137.
As time passed in this way, the two of them remained there, O Earth.
एह्येहि नाथ गच्छावः पश्य गोप्यं मनीषितम् 137.
Come, come, Lord, let us go; see the secret intent.
