Varaha Purana

तानि तानि तरन्त्येव सर्व एव पितामहाः

All the ancestors indeed cross over those obstacles.

चर्मकारस्तु जायेत वर्षाणां तु त्रयोदश

A leatherworker is born for thirteen years.

सूकरत्वात्परिभ्रष्टः श्वा भवेच्च जुगुप्सितः

Having fallen from the state of a boar, he becomes a despised dog.

मद्भक्तश्च विनीतश्च अपराधविवर्जितः

My devotee, humble and free from offenses,

य एतेन विधानेन वसुधे कर्म कारयेत्

Whoever performs work on the earth according to this procedure,

भेरीशब्दमकृत्वा तु यस्तु मां प्रतिबोधयेत्

Without sounding the drum, whoever awakens me,

तस्य वक्ष्यामि सुश्रोणि प्रायश्चित्तं मम प्रियम्

For him, O lovely-hipped one, I will declare my favored atonement.

यस्य कस्यचिन्मासस्य शुक्लपक्षे तु द्वादशी 136.

On the twelfth day of the bright fortnight of any month,

य एतेन विधानेन वसुधे कर्म कारयेत्

Whoever performs work on the earth according to this procedure,

अन्नं भुक्त्वा बहुतरमजीर्णेन परिप्लुतः

Having eaten much food, overwhelmed by indigestion,

एकजन्मनि श्वा चैव वानरश्चैव जायते

In one birth, he becomes both a dog and a monkey.

एकजन्म भवेदन्धो मूषको जायते पुनः

In one birth, he becomes blind; in the next, he is born as a mouse.

शुद्धो भागवतः श्रेष्ठस्त्वपराधविवर्ज्जित

He is pure, a foremost devotee of the Lord, and free from transgressions.

किल्बिषाद्येन मुच्येत मम भक्तिपरायणः

By which a person devoted to my worship is freed from sin and other faults.

पायसेन दिनत्रय्यां त्रिदिनं सक्तुना तथा

For three days, with milk, and for three days likewise with flour cakes.

उत्थायापररात्रे तु कृत्वा वै दन्तधावनम्

Rising at the end of night, and having brushed the teeth,

य एतेन विधानेन प्रायश्चित्तं समाचरेत्

Whoever performs atonement in this manner,

आख्यानानां महाख्यानं तपसां च परं तपः 136.

This is the greatest of stories, the highest of austerities.

एष धर्मश्च कीर्त्तिश्च आचाराणां महौजसाम्

This is the dharma and fame of those of great conduct.

य एतत्पठते नित्यं कल्यमुत्थाय मानवः

Whoever recites this daily, rising at an auspicious time,

आरोग्याणां महारोग्यं मङ्गलानां तु मङ्गलम्

It is the greatest health among all health, the most auspicious among all auspicious things.

यस्तु भागवतो नित्यं पठते च दृढव्रतः

But he who is a steadfast devotee and recites it daily,

एष जप्यः प्रमाणं च सन्ध्योपासनमेव च

This is to be recited, it is authority, and it is indeed the worship at twilight.

न पठेन्मूर्खमध्ये तु कुशिष्याणां तथैव च

It should not be recited among fools or among bad students.

एतत्ते कथितो देवि आचारस्य विनिश्चयः

Thus, O Devi, the determination of proper conduct has been told to you.

इति श्रीवराहपुराणे भगवच्छास्त्रे प्रायश्चित्तकर्मसूत्रं नाम षट्त्रिंशदधिकशततमोऽध्यायः

Thus ends the one hundred thirty-sixth chapter, named 'The Sutra on Atonement Rites,' in the divine scripture of the Varaha Purana.

अथ गृध्रजम्बुकाख्यानम् । तत्रादित्यवरप्रदानम् श्रुत्वा तु विपुलं ह्येतदपराधविशोधनम्

Now, the story of the vulture and the jackal. There, the bestowal of the Aditya vow—having heard this great means of purifying offenses—

अहो कर्म महाश्रेष्ठं भगवंस्तव भाषितम्

Oh, what a most excellent act, O Lord, you have spoken of.

श्रुतं ह्येव महाबाहो सर्वधर्मार्थ साधकम्

Indeed, O mighty-armed one, I have heard this, which accomplishes the purpose of all dharma.
