ततो भवेत्सुपूतात्मा मद्भक्तः स न संशयः
Then he becomes of thoroughly pure soul, my devotee—of this there is no doubt.
दीक्षितः पिबते मद्यं प्रायश्चित्तं न विद्यते
If an initiated person drinks liquor, there is no expiation for him.
अग्निवर्णां सुरां पीत्वा तेन मुच्येत किल्बिषात्
By drinking liquor of the color of fire, he is freed from sin by that.
न स लिप्यति पापेन संसारं च न गच्छति
He is not tainted by sin, nor does he go to rebirth.
नरके पच्यते घोरे दश पंच च सूकरः
He is cooked in a terrible hell for fifteen (years) as a boar.
वर्षमेकं ततः शुध्येन्मत्कर्मणि रतः शुचिः
After one year, he is purified, devoted to my actions, and pure.
ततो भूमिर्वचः श्रुत्वा प्रत्युवाच पुनर्हरिम्
Then, having heard these words, the Earth again addressed Hari.
कथं मुच्येत देवेश प्रायश्चित्तं वद प्रभो यो मे कुसुम्भशाकेन प्रापणं कुरुते नरः
O Lord of the gods, tell me, O Master, what atonement there is, and how one may be freed, for a man who uses the Kusumbha branch as a broom.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि नरके परिपच्यते 136.
He is tormented in hell for ten thousand years.
भक्षणे तु कृते कुर्याच्चान्द्रायणमतन्द्रितः
But if he has eaten it, he should diligently perform the Cāndrāyaṇa expiation.
य एतेन विधानेन प्रायश्चित्तं समाचरेत्
Whoever performs atonement in this manner,
यः पारक्येण वस्त्रेण न धूतेन च माधवि
Who, with another's garment, and not a washed one, O Mādhavi,
करोति मम कर्माणि स्पृशते मां तदा स्थितः
Performs my rites or touches me while thus situated,
हीनपादेन जायेत चैकं जन्म वसुन्धरे
O Earth, he is born with a defective limb for one birth.
तस्य वक्ष्यामि सुश्रोणि प्रायश्चित्तं महौजसम्
For him, O fair-hipped one, I shall declare a powerful atonement.
अष्टभक्तं ततः कृत्वा मम भक्तिपरायणः
Then, having observed a fast for eight meals, devoted to my worship,
तिष्ठेज्जलाशये गत्वा शान्तो दान्तो यतव्रतः
He should go to a body of water and remain there, calm, self-restrained, and observing vows.
प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यामुदिते तु दिवाकरे
When the night has passed and the sun has risen,
य एतेन विधानेन प्रायश्चित्तं समाचरेत् 136.
Whoever performs atonement in this manner,
( अकृत्वा यो नवान्नानि मम कर्मपरायणः
Who, being devoted to my rites, does not prepare new rice,
पितरस्तस्य नाश्नन्ति वर्षाणि दश पंच च
His ancestors do not eat for fifteen years.
न तस्य धर्मो विद्येत एवमेतन्न संशयः
For him, there is no righteousness; thus it is, without doubt.
प्रायश्चित्तं महाभागे मम भक्तसुखावहम्
O highly fortunate one, the atonement brings happiness to my devotees.
आकाशशयनं कृत्वा चतुर्थेऽहनि शुध्यति
By lying on the ground under the open sky, he is purified on the fourth day.
पंचगव्यं ततः पीत्वा शीघ्रं मुच्येत किल्बिषात्
After drinking the five products of the cow, one is quickly freed from sin.
सर्वसङ्गं परित्यज्य मम लोकं स गच्छति
Abandoning all attachments, he attains my world.
कुणपो जायते भूमे यातुधानो न संशयः
He becomes a corpse on earth, a demon—there is no doubt.
तिष्ठत्यत्र महाभागे एवमेतन्न संशयः
He remains here, O noble one; thus it is, without doubt.
प्रायश्चित्तं प्रवक्ष्यामि येन मुच्येत किल्बिषात् 136.
I will declare the atonement by which one is freed from sin.
उपोष्य चाष्टभक्तं तु दशैकादशमेव च
Having fasted with eight meals, on the tenth or eleventh day,
