Now I shall declare the atonement by which one is cleansed of sin.
One should lie in the open air, wearing a single garment, seated on kusa grass.
Freed from all sins, he attains my world.
Listen, O fair-hipped one, to the excellent atonement for him.
There, a man is born who is devoted to my deeds.
For him, O fair-hipped one, I shall declare a most powerful atonement.
For one day, he should subsist on barley and cow’s urine.
He does not return to worldly existence; he attains my world.
He is a fool, a doer of wicked deeds, yet devoted to my actions.
For as many hairs as are present on the body of the Boar—on my own form—
Moreover, I will tell you something else; listen to this, O Earth.
For as long as that remains established in that very body—
Again, I will tell you something else; listen to this, O Earth.
Becoming blind, O goddess, he is then born in such a state.
He is born in a great, accomplished, pure family devoted to the Lord.
He possesses wealth, virtues, beauty, good character, and purity.
By this, he is freed from sin, being devoted to my actions.
He should subsist for seven days, indeed, on milk alone.
Having performed penance, O noble one, he attains my world.
Now I will tell you the fault in this; listen, O beautiful one, in truth.
Then he becomes of thoroughly pure soul, my devotee—of this there is no doubt.
If an initiated person drinks liquor, there is no expiation for him.
By drinking liquor of the color of fire, he is freed from sin by that.
He is not tainted by sin, nor does he go to rebirth.
He is cooked in a terrible hell for fifteen (years) as a boar.
After one year, he is purified, devoted to my actions, and pure.
Then, having heard these words, the Earth again addressed Hari.
O Lord of the gods, tell me, O Master, what atonement there is, and how one may be freed, for a man who uses the Kusumbha branch as a broom.
He is tormented in hell for ten thousand years.
But if he has eaten it, he should diligently perform the Cāndrāyaṇa expiation.
