विमुक्तः सर्वपापेभ्यः ससंज्ञो विगतज्वरः
Released from all sins, possessing consciousness, and free from fever.
जालपादं भक्षयित्वा यस्तु मामुपसर्पति
He who approaches me after eating jālapāda.
कुम्भीरो दश वर्षाणि पञ्च वर्षाणि सूकरः
As a crocodile for ten years, as a boar for five years.
कृत्वा तु दुष्करं कर्म जायते विपुले कुले
Having performed a difficult act, one is born in a noble family.
सर्वकर्माण्यतिक्रम्य मम लोकं स गच्छति
Transcending all actions, he attains my world.
तरन्ति मनुजा येन घोरसंसारसागरात्
By which humans cross the dreadful ocean of transmigration.
फलभक्षो दिनत्रय्यां तिलभक्षो दिनत्रयम्
Eating fruit for three days, eating sesame for three days.
दशपञ्च दिनान्येवं प्रायश्चित्तं समाचरेत् विनीतात्मा शुचिर्भूत्वा य इच्छेत्सुशुभां गतिम्
For fifteen days, thus, one should perform atonement; with a disciplined mind and purified, whoever desires an auspicious path.
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे जालपादभक्षणापराधप्रायश्चित्तं नाम पञ्चत्रिंशदधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred thirty-fifth chapter in the glorious Varaha Purana, named 'Atonement for the offense of eating jālapāda.'
अथ प्रायश्चित्तकर्मसूत्रम् दीपं स्पृष्ट्वा तु यो देवि मम कर्माणि कारयेत्
Now, the sutra of atonement actions: O Devi, whoever, after touching a lamp, performs my rites.
तच्छृणुष्व महाभागे कथ्यमानं मयाऽनघे
Listen, O highly fortunate one, as I relate this to you, O sinless one.
चाण्डालस्य गृहे तत्र एवमेतन्न संशयः
In the house of a cāṇḍāla, there, it is so; there is no doubt.
मद्भक्तश्चैव जायेत शुद्धे भागवते गृहे
And my devotee is born in a pure, bhāgavata household.
तरन्ति मनुजा येन कष्टं चाण्डालयोनिषु
By which humans cross the hardship in the wombs of cāṇḍālas.
चतुर्थभक्तमाहारमाकाशशयने स्वपेत्
He should eat only once every four days and sleep on a bed under the open sky.
शुचिर्भूत्वा यथान्यायं मम कर्मपथे स्थितः
Having become pure, and acting according to proper rule, he should remain on the path of my prescribed actions.
संसारशोधनं चैव यत्कृत्वा लभते शुभम्
And whatever purifies worldly existence, by doing that, one attains auspiciousness.
मम दोषापराधस्य शृणु तत्त्वेन यत्फलम्
Now hear truly the result of my fault and offense.
गृध्रस्तु सप्त वर्षाणि जायते खचरेश्वरः 136.
He becomes a vulture, lord of the sky-dwellers, for seven years.
पिशाचो जायते तत्र वर्षाणि नव पंच च
Thereafter, he is born as a piśāca (flesh-eating spirit) for fifteen years.
ततो नारायणाच्छ्रुत्वा धरणी वाक्यमब्रवीत्
Then, having heard this from Nārāyaṇa, the Earth spoke these words.
परं कौतूहलं देव निखिलं वक्तुमर्हसि
O God, I have great curiosity; you should tell me everything.
किन्त्वत्र त्रिगुणं देव पवित्रे शिवभाषिते
But what is the threefold nature here, O God, in the pure and auspicious speech?
कपालं गृह्य देवोऽत्र दीप्तिमन्तं महौजसम्
Here, the god took up a skull, radiant and of great energy.
श्मशानं पद्मपत्राक्ष रुद्रस्य च निशि प्रियम् शृणु तत्त्वेन मे देवि इदमाख्यानमुत्तमम्
O lotus-eyed one, at night in the cremation ground, dear to Rudra—listen truly, O goddess, to this excellent account of mine.
अद्यापि ते न जानन्ति ह्यनघे संशितव्रताः
Even today, O sinless one, those of firm vows do not know this.
हत्वा च बालान्वृद्धांश्च त्रिपुरे रूपिणीः स्त्रियः
Having slain children and elders, and women in the form of the triple city,
प्रणष्टमानसैश्वर्यो नष्टा माया च योगिनः
The yogin lost his mind’s sovereignty, and his magical power was destroyed.
तत्र स्थाने शिवो भूमे गणैः सर्वैः समावृतः 136.
There, on that spot, Shiva stood, surrounded by all the hosts.
ततो ध्यातो मया देवि शङ्करः पुनरेष्यति
Then, meditated upon by me, O goddess, Shankara will return again.
