पर्णभक्षस्त्रीण्यहानि पयोभक्षो दिनत्रयम्
One should subsist on leaves for three days, or on milk for three days.
एवं कृत्वा महाभागे वाससोच्छिष्टकारिणः
Having done so, O highly fortunate one, for those who have worn soiled garments,
श्वानोच्छिष्टं तु यो दद्यान्मम कर्मपरायणः
If one devoted to my actions gives what has been defiled by a dog,
श्वानो वै सप्त जन्मानि गोमायुः सप्त वै तथा
He becomes a dog for seven births, and likewise a jackal for seven births.
विशुद्धात्मा श्रुतिज्ञश्च मद्भक्तश्चैव जायते
Then, with a purified mind, learned in the scriptures, and devoted to me, he is born.
शृणु तत्त्वेन वसुधे प्रायश्चित्तं महौजसम्
Hear in truth, O Earth, the powerful expiation.
मूलभक्षो दिनत्रय्यां फलाहारो दिनत्रयम्
For three days one should eat roots, for three days fruits.
दध्याहारो दिनत्रय्यां पायसेन दिनत्रयम्
For three days one should eat curds, for three days rice cooked in milk.
एवं दिनान्येकविंशत्कृत्वा वै शुभलक्षणम् 135.
Thus, performing this for twenty-one days, with auspicious marks,
भुक्त्वा वराहमांसं तु यश्च मामिह सर्पति
Whoever eats boar’s flesh and moves about here,
वराहो दश वर्षाणि कृत्वानुचरते वने
Becomes a boar for ten years, wandering in the forest.
ततश्च मूषको भूत्वा वर्षाणि च चतुर्दश
Then, becoming a mouse, he lives for fourteen years.
सल्लकी चाष्टवर्षाणि जायते भवने बहु
Then, as a lizard, he is born in many houses for eight years.
एवं संसारितां गत्वा वराहामिषभक्षकः
Thus, having passed through such transmigrations, the eater of boar’s flesh,
हृषीकेशवचः श्रुत्वा सर्वं सम्पूर्णलक्षणम्
Having heard all the words of Hṛṣīkeśa, complete in every mark,
एतन्मे परमं गुह्यं तव भक्तसुखावहम्
This supreme secret of mine, which brings happiness to your devotees, has been declared to you.
तरन्ति मानुषा येन तिर्यक्संसारसागरात्
By which humans cross the ocean of transmigration among animals.
पानीयं तु ततो भुक्ता तिष्ठेत्सप्तदिनं ततः
After eating, one should subsist on water for seven days thereafter.
तिलभक्षो दिनान्सप्त पाषाणस्य च भक्षकः 135.
One who eats sesame for seven days, and one who eats stones.
क्षान्तं दान्तं तथा कृत्वा अहङ्कारविवर्ज्जितः
Having made oneself patient and self-controlled, and free from pride.
विमुक्तः सर्वपापेभ्यः ससंज्ञो विगतज्वरः
Released from all sins, possessing consciousness, and free from fever.
जालपादं भक्षयित्वा यस्तु मामुपसर्पति
He who approaches me after eating jālapāda.
कुम्भीरो दश वर्षाणि पञ्च वर्षाणि सूकरः
As a crocodile for ten years, as a boar for five years.
कृत्वा तु दुष्करं कर्म जायते विपुले कुले
Having performed a difficult act, one is born in a noble family.
सर्वकर्माण्यतिक्रम्य मम लोकं स गच्छति
Transcending all actions, he attains my world.
तरन्ति मनुजा येन घोरसंसारसागरात्
By which humans cross the dreadful ocean of transmigration.
फलभक्षो दिनत्रय्यां तिलभक्षो दिनत्रयम्
Eating fruit for three days, eating sesame for three days.
दशपञ्च दिनान्येवं प्रायश्चित्तं समाचरेत् विनीतात्मा शुचिर्भूत्वा य इच्छेत्सुशुभां गतिम्
For fifteen days, thus, one should perform atonement; with a disciplined mind and purified, whoever desires an auspicious path.
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे जालपादभक्षणापराधप्रायश्चित्तं नाम पञ्चत्रिंशदधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred thirty-fifth chapter in the glorious Varaha Purana, named 'Atonement for the offense of eating jālapāda.'
अथ प्रायश्चित्तकर्मसूत्रम् दीपं स्पृष्ट्वा तु यो देवि मम कर्माणि कारयेत्
Now, the sutra of atonement actions: O Devi, whoever, after touching a lamp, performs my rites.
