रजस्वलासु नारीषु रजो यत्तत्प्रवर्त्तते
The flow that occurs in women during menstruation—
वर्षाणि दश पञ्चैव वसते तत्र निश्चयात्
He must certainly reside there for ten or five years.
प्रायश्चितं प्रवक्ष्यामि तस्य कायविशोधनम्
I shall declare the expiation for him, the purification of his body.
एकाहारं ततः कृत्वा दिनानि दश सप्त च
Then, having taken one meal a day, for ten or seven days—
एवं स मुच्यते भूमे मम विप्रियकारकः
In this way, he is released, O Earth, from what causes me displeasure.
एतत्ते कथितं भूमे रक्तवस्त्रविभूषिते
Thus this has been told to you, O Earth, adorned with red garments.
यस्तु मामन्धकारेषु विना दीपेन सुन्दरि
But whoever approaches me in darkness, without a lamp, O beautiful one—
पतनं तस्य वक्ष्यामि शृणुष्व त्वं वसुन्धरे
I shall declare his fall; listen, O Vasundhara.
अन्धो भूत्वा महाभागे एकं जन्म तमोमयः 135.
Becoming blind, O greatly fortunate one, he is born for one life enveloped in darkness.
अनन्यमानसो भूत्वा भूमे ह्येतत्प्रसाधयेत्
With a mind fixed on nothing else, O Earth, he should atone for this.
संस्पृशेत्सोऽपि धर्मात्मा येन लोकं मम व्रजेत्
Even if he touches, O righteous one, by whom one would reach my world,
एकाहारं ततः कृत्वा दिनविंशं समाहितः
Then, having taken food only once a day, for twenty days with concentrated mind,
एकाहारस्ततो भूत्वा निषीदेच्च जलाशनः
After that, being one who eats once a day, he should sit, subsisting on water.
प्रायश्चित्तेन चैतेन मुच्यते पातकात्ततः
By this expiation, he is freed from that sin.
देवि कर्माणि कुर्वीत तस्य वै पातनं शृणु
O goddess, one should perform acts for him; now hear of his fall.
पञ्च वर्षाणि नकुलो दश वर्षाणि कच्छपः
He becomes a mongoose for five years, a tortoise for ten years,
पारावतेषु जायेत नव वर्षाणि पञ्च च
He is born among pigeons for nine years and five more.
मम तिष्ठति पार्श्वेषु यत्रैवाहं प्रतिष्ठितः
He remains at my side, exactly where I am established.
येनासौ लभते सिद्धिं कृष्णवस्त्रापराधतः 135.
By which he attains perfection, due to the offense of wearing black garments.
त्रीणि पिण्डांस्त्रिरात्रं तु एवं मुच्येत किल्बिषात्
By offering three balls of food for three nights, thus one is freed from sin.
शुचिर्भागवतो भूत्वा मम मार्गानुसारतः
Becoming pure and devoted, following my path,
वाससा चाप्यधौतेन यो मे कर्माणि कारयेत्
And with unwashed garments, whoever makes offerings for me,
तस्य दोषं प्रवक्ष्यामि अपराधं वसुन्धरे
I shall declare his fault, O Earth, his offense.
देवि भूत्वा गजो मत्तस्तिष्ठत्येकं नरो भुवि
O goddess, having become a mad elephant, a man remains on earth for one birth.
गोमायुरेकं जन्मापि जन्म चैकं हयस्तथा
He is a jackal for one birth, and likewise a horse for one birth.
सप्तजन्मान्तरं पश्चात्ततो भवति मानुषः
After seven further births, then he becomes human.
दक्षो निरपराधश्च अहङ्कारविवर्जितः श्रुतमेतन्मया देव यत्त्वया समुदाहृतम्
He is skilled, without fault, and free from pride; this has been heard by me, O god, as you have declared.
संसारं वाससोच्छिष्टा येन गच्छन्ति मानुषाः
By the remnants of garments, humans go to transmigration.
किल्बिषाद्येन मुच्यन्ते तव कर्मपरायणाः शृणु तत्त्वेन मे देवि कथ्यमानं मयाऽनघे ।। 135.
Hear from me, O sinless one, the truth of how those devoted to my actions are freed from sin and the like, as I explain it to you, O goddess.
प्रायश्चित्तं प्रवक्ष्यामि मम कर्मपरायणः
I shall declare the expiation for those devoted to my actions.
