Varaha Purana

तस्य ये मुखनिष्क्रान्ता धर्मास्तान्वक्तुमर्हसि ततः स पुण्डरीकाक्षः शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः

You should speak of those dharmas that have issued from his mouth; then that lotus-eyed one, bearer of conch, discus, and mace—

वराहरूपी भगवाँल्लोकनाथो जनार्दनः । उवाच मधुरं वाक्यं मेघदुन्दुभिनिःस्वनः

The blessed Lord, Janardana, master of the worlds, in the form of a boar, spoke sweet words, resounding like thunderclouds.

भक्तकर्मसुखार्थाय गुणवित्तसमन्विताम्

For the sake of the happiness of devotees’ actions, endowed with virtue and wealth,

देवि कारयते कर्म मम लोकं स गच्छति

O goddess, he who performs action for me attains my world.

मत्पूजनं विधानेन यदीच्छेत्परमां गतिम् 134.

If one desires the highest state, one should worship me according to the prescribed method.

संसारं ते न गच्छन्ति अपराधविवर्ज्जिताः अकर्मण्येन पुष्पेण यो मामर्चयते भुवि

They do not enter the cycle of rebirth, being free from offenses; but he who worships me on earth with improper flowers—

पातनं तस्य वक्ष्यामि तच्छृणुष्व वसुन्धरे

I will declare his fall; listen to this, O Vasundhara.

मूर्खा भागवता देवि मम विप्रियकारिणः

Foolish devotees, O goddess, who act contrary to my will—

अज्ञानस्य च दोषेण दुःखान्यनुभवन्ति च

Because of the fault of ignorance, they experience suffering.

मूकः पञ्च च वर्षाणि बलीवर्दश्च द्वादश

He is mute for five years, and an ox for twelve.

त्रीणि वर्षाणि महिषो भवत्येव न संशयः

For three years, he certainly becomes a buffalo, without doubt.

अकर्मण्यं विशालाक्षि पुष्पं ये च ददन्ति वै भगवन्यदि तुष्टोऽसि विशुद्धेनान्तरान्मना

O wide-eyed one, those who offer flowers without proper action, if you are pleased, Lord, with a mind purified within—

येन शुध्यन्ति ते भक्तास्तव कर्मपरायणाः शृणु तत्त्वेन मे देवि यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि

By which your devoted followers, intent on action, become purified—listen truly, O goddess, as you have asked me.

प्रायश्चित्तं महाभागे येन शुध्यन्ति मानवाः

O greatly fortunate one, I shall tell you the expiation by which humans become purified.

वीरासनविधींश्चैव कारयेत्सप्त सप्त च ।। 134.

One should perform the procedure of the hero’s posture seven times each.

यावकान्नं त्रीण्यहानि वायुभक्षो दिनत्रयम्

For three days, one should eat only barley food, or for three days subsist on air alone.

सवर्पापप्रमुक्तश्च मम लोकं स गच्छति

Freed from all major sins, he attains my world.

इति श्रीवराहपुराणे पूजादिसामयिकापराधप्रायश्चित्तं नाम चतुस्त्रिंशदधिकशततमोऽध्यायः

Thus ends the one hundred thirty-fourth chapter, named 'Expiation for Offenses in Worship and Related Duties,' in the glorious Varaha Purana.

अथ जालपादभक्षणापराधप्रायश्चित्तम् रक्तवस्त्रेण संयुक्तो यो हि मामुपसर्पति

Now, the expiation for the offense of eating with a net or feet: whoever approaches me wearing red garments—

रजस्वलासु नारीषु रजो यत्तत्प्रवर्त्तते

The flow that occurs in women during menstruation—

वर्षाणि दश पञ्चैव वसते तत्र निश्चयात्

He must certainly reside there for ten or five years.

प्रायश्चितं प्रवक्ष्यामि तस्य कायविशोधनम्

I shall declare the expiation for him, the purification of his body.

एकाहारं ततः कृत्वा दिनानि दश सप्त च

Then, having taken one meal a day, for ten or seven days—

एवं स मुच्यते भूमे मम विप्रियकारकः

In this way, he is released, O Earth, from what causes me displeasure.

एतत्ते कथितं भूमे रक्तवस्त्रविभूषिते

Thus this has been told to you, O Earth, adorned with red garments.

यस्तु मामन्धकारेषु विना दीपेन सुन्दरि

But whoever approaches me in darkness, without a lamp, O beautiful one—

पतनं तस्य वक्ष्यामि शृणुष्व त्वं वसुन्धरे

I shall declare his fall; listen, O Vasundhara.

अन्धो भूत्वा महाभागे एकं जन्म तमोमयः 135.

Becoming blind, O greatly fortunate one, he is born for one life enveloped in darkness.

अनन्यमानसो भूत्वा भूमे ह्येतत्प्रसाधयेत्

With a mind fixed on nothing else, O Earth, he should atone for this.
