'Freed from all sins, there is truly no offense for him.'
Joined with passion and delusion, and overcome by desire.
He is born blind, O Devi, poor, and lacking in wisdom.
Having committed this offense, there is no doubt about it: for your devotees, O Lord, there is liberation from the ocean of worldly existence.
Endowed with offense, devoted to your actions.
Śrī Varāha said: 'Having performed penance for three nights, one should dwell on a bed under the open sky.'
Becoming pure and a devotee, devoted to my actions.
He is freed from sin, O Devi, though expelled from conduct.
O Devi, whoever touches a corpse and remains in my sacred places—
He is born as a caṇḍāla for ten thousand years.
As a fly for three years, as a lapwing for eleven years.
As an elephant for a hundred years, and as a donkey for thirty-two.
Thus, due to his own fault, he became devoted to action for my sake.
Then, hearing Hari’s words, he questioned in distress.
The Earth spoke: The words, exceedingly dreadful, pierce my very core.
Having fallen from proper conduct, he is devoted to your actions.
Hearing the Earth’s words thus, Janardana, Lord of the worlds,
Śrī Varāha spoke: Then, one should subsist on a single meal for ten and five days.
Then, having performed this rite, one should ingest pañcagavya.
This has been told to you, O Devi, and also regarding touching the dead.
Whoever performs expiation by this procedure,
Thus ends the one hundred and thirty-second chapter, named 'Expiation for Touching the Dead,' in the Śrī Varāha Purāṇa.
Now, expiation for touching during worship, ritual, urine, or feces: When one touches me, O Earth, wind passes from the body.
The fly for five years, the mouse for three years.
This, O Devi, is indeed torment, bewilderment for me at present.
Hearing these words, Vasundharā replied to Hṛṣīkeśa: Your devotee of action attains incomparable sin.
O Deva, for his happiness you should declare purification. Hear in full from me, O sinless one, as I explain.
Having committed this offense, one should cross over it by a prescribed act.
And having performed such an act, he is not at fault with me.
This has been told to you, O fortunate one, regarding the great offense of action.
