Varaha Purana

तद्वै भूम्या वचः श्रुत्वा हृषीकेशो महामनाः

Having heard those words of Earth, Hrishikesha, of great mind—

श्रीवराह उवाच ये तु भुञ्जन्ति राजान्नं लोभेन च भयेन वा

Sri Varaha said: Those who eat the king's food, whether out of greed or fear—

आपद्गता हि भुञ्जन्ति राजान्नं तु वसुन्धरे

Indeed, those in distress eat the king's food, O Vasundhara.

भगवद्वचनं श्रुत्वा कम्पिता च वसुन्धरा 130.

Hearing the words of the Blessed One, Vasundhara trembled.

ततो दीनमना भूत्वा सा मही संशितव्रता

Then, becoming dejected in mind, that Earth, firm in her vow—

धरण्युवाच को नु दोषोऽस्ति राज्ञां हि तन्मे त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि

Earth said: What indeed is the fault of kings? That you should tell me.

ततो भूम्या वचः श्रुत्वा सर्वधर्मविदां वरः

Then, having heard the words of Earth, the best of those who know all dharma—

श्रीवराह उवाच राजान्नं तु न भोक्तव्यं शुभैभार्गवतैः सदा

Śrī Varāha said: Food belonging to the king must never be consumed by the pious Bhārgavas.

यद्यप्येष समत्वेन राजा लोके प्रवर्त्तते

Even though the king acts with impartiality in the world,

अपि वा गर्हितं तेन राजान्नं तु वसुन्धरे

Still, O Earth, food from the king is considered blameworthy because of that.

ततो यद्यत्प्रवक्ष्यामि तच्छृणुष्व वसुन्धरे

Therefore, whatever I am about to declare, listen to it, O Earth.

स्थापयित्वा तु मां देवि विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा

Having established me, O goddess, through the prescribed rite,

सिद्धं भागवतैश्चान्नं मम प्रापणशेषकम्

Food that remains after being offered to me by the devoted Bhāgavatas is pure.

एवं विष्णुवचः श्रुत्वा धरणी संशितव्रता 130.

Hearing thus the words of Viṣṇu, the Earth, steadfast in her vow,

धरण्युवाच कर्मणा केन शुद्ध्येत तन्मे ब्रूहि जनार्दन

Earth said: By what act is it purified? Tell me that, O Janārdana.

श्रीवराह उवाच तरन्ति पुरुषा येन राजान्नस्योपभुञ्जकाः

Śrī Varāha said: By which means do those who partake of the king's food become purified?

एकं चान्द्रायणं कृत्वा तप्तकृच्छ्रं च पुष्कलम्

By performing one Cāndrāyaṇa and a thorough Taptakṛcchra penance,

न तस्य चापराधोऽस्ति वसुधे वै वचो मम ममात्र पूजाकामेन यदीच्छेत्परमां गतिम्

There is no fault for him, O Earth, this is my word; if one desires supreme attainment for the sake of my worship here.

इति श्रीवराहपुराणे भगवच्छास्त्रे राजान्नप्रायश्चित्तं नाम त्रिंशदधिकशततमोऽध्यायः

Thus ends the one hundred thirtieth chapter, entitled 'The Expiation for Eating the King's Food,' in the Śrī Varāha Purāṇa, the divine scripture.

अथ दन्तकाष्ठाचर्वणप्रायश्चित्तम् दन्तकाष्ठमचर्वित्वा यो हि मामुपसर्पति

Now, the expiation for not chewing a tooth-stick: Whoever approaches me without chewing a tooth-stick—

नारायणवचः श्रुत्वा पृथिवी धर्मसंश्रितः

Hearing the words of Nārāyaṇa, the Earth, devoted to righteousness—

धरण्युवाच कथमेकापराधेन सर्वमेव प्रणश्यति

Earth said: How does everything perish because of a single transgression?

श्रीवराह उवाच येन चैकापराधेन पूर्वकर्म प्रणश्यति

Śrī Varāha said: By which a single transgression destroys previous merit—

मनुष्यः किल्बिषी भद्रे कफपित्तसमन्वितः

A human being, O blessed one, afflicted by sin and possessed of phlegm and bile,

तत्सर्वबीजं नश्येत दन्तकाष्ठस्य भक्षणात्

All the seed of that is destroyed by eating without chewing a tooth-stick.

धरण्युवाच प्रायश्चित्तं च मे ब्रूहि येन धर्मो न नश्यति

The Earth spoke: Tell me the expiation by which my righteousness is not destroyed.

श्रीवराह उवाच कथयिष्यामि हीदं ते यथा शुद्ध्यन्ति मानवाः

Śrī Varāha said: I shall tell you now how humans become purified.

आकाशशयनं कृत्वा दिनानि द्वे च पंच च

By lying on the ground for two and five days—

एवं ते कथितं भद्रे दन्तकाष्ठस्य भक्षणम् 131.

Thus, O gentle one, I have told you about the eating of tooth-sticks.
