Varaha Purana

तैः संचिन्तितमात्रस्तु देवश्चक्रगदाधरः । आवयोः सैन्यमाविश्य एक एव महाबलः ।। १०.

As soon as they thought of him, the god bearing the discus and mace entered our army, alone, yet of great might.

एकधा दशधात्मानं शतधा च सहस्त्रधा । लक्षधा कोटिधा कृत्वा स्वभूत्या च जगत्पतिः ।। १०.

The Lord of the universe, by his own power, made himself one, ten, a hundred, a thousand, a hundred thousand, and ten million forms.

एवं स्थिते देववरे अस्मत्सैन्ये महाबलः । यः कश्चिदसुरो राजन्नावयोर्बलमाश्रितः । स हतः पतितो भूमौ दृश्यते गतचेतनः ।। १०.

O King, as the mighty god thus stood in our army, any demon who relied on our strength was struck down, fallen to the earth, lifeless.

एवं तत् सहसा सैन्यं मायया विश्वमूर्तिना । निहतं साश्वकलिलं पत्तिद्विपसमाकुलम् ।। १०.

Thus, in an instant, the entire army, filled with horses, elephants, and foot soldiers, was destroyed by the wondrous power of the universal form.

चतुरङ्गं बलं सर्वं हत्वा देवो रथाङ्गधृक् । आवां शोषावथो दृष्ट्वा गतोऽन्तर्द्धानमीश्वरः ।। १०.

Having slain the entire fourfold army, the god bearing the discus vanished from our sight, O King, after we beheld our forces dried up.

आवयोरीदृशं कर्म दृष्टं देवस्य शार्ङ्गिणः । ततस्तमेव शरणं गतावाराधनाय वै ।। १०.

Such was the deed of the bow-bearing god that we witnessed; therefore, we sought refuge in him alone, to worship him.

त्वं चास्मन्मित्रतनयः सुप्रतीकात्मजो नृप । इमे च आवयोः कन्ये गृहाण मनुजेश्वर । हेतृकन्या सुकेशी तु मिश्रकेशी प्रहेतृणः ।। १०.

And you, O king, are the son of our friend, Supratīka; these are our daughters—accept them, O lord of men. Hetṛ's daughter is Sukeśī, and Prahetṛ's is Miśrakeśī.

दुर्जयस्त्वेवमुक्तस्तु हेतृणा ते उभे शुभे । कन्ये जग्राह धर्मेण भार्यार्थं मनुजेश्वरः ।। १०.

Thus addressed by the matchmakers, King Durjaya lawfully took both auspicious maidens as wives.

ते लब्ध्वा सहसा राजा मुदा परमया युतः । आजगाम स्वकं राष्ट्रं निजसैन्यसमावृतः ।। १०.

Having obtained them, the king, filled with great joy, swiftly returned to his own kingdom, surrounded by his army.

ततः कालेन महता तस्य पुत्रद्वयं बभौ । सुकेश्याः सुप्रभः पुत्रो मिश्रकेश्याः सुदर्शनः ।। १०.

After a long time, two sons were born to him: from Sukeśī, a son named Suprabha, and from Miśrakeśī, a son named Sudarśana.

स राजा दुर्जयः श्रीमाँल्लब्ध्वा पुत्रद्वयं शुभम् । स्वयं कालान्तरे श्रीमाञ्जगामारण्यमन्तिके ।। १०.

That illustrious king Durjaya, having obtained these two excellent sons, later went himself to the edge of the forest.

तत्रस्थो वनजातीर्हि बधयन् वै भयंकराः । ददर्शारण्यमाश्रित्य मुनिं स्थितमकल्मषम् ।। १०.

There, killing the fearsome wild beasts, he saw, dwelling in the forest, a sinless sage.

तपस्यन्तं महाभागं नाम्ना गौरमुखं शुभम् । ऋषिवृन्दस्य गोप्तारं त्रातारं पापिनः स्वयम् ।। १०.

He beheld the great and fortunate ascetic named Gauramukha, protector of the community of seers and savior of the sinful.

तस्याश्रमे विमलजलाविलेमरु- त्सुगन्धिवृक्षप्रवरे द्विजन्मनः । रराज जीमूत इवाम्बरान्मही- मुपागतः प्रवरविमानवद् गृहः ।। १०.

In his hermitage, with pure waters, gentle breezes, and excellent fragrant trees, the home of the twice-born shone like a cloud descended from the sky, resembling a splendid celestial palace upon the earth.

ज्वलनमखाग्निप्रतिभाषिताम्बरः सुशुद्धसंवासितवेशकुट्टकः । शिष्यैः समुच्चारितसामनादकः सुरूपयोषिदृषिकन्यकाकुलः । इतीदृशोऽस्यावसाथो वराश्रमे सुपुष्पिताशेषतरुप्रसूनः ।। १०.

Its atmosphere was radiant like the fire of sacrifice, its dwellings spotlessly clean, resounding with the chanting of Sāman hymns by disciples, filled with beautiful women and seers' daughters, and adorned with blossoming flowers on every tree—such was the noble hermitage.

श्रीवराह उवाच । ततस्तमीदृशं दृष्ट्वा तदा गौरमुखाश्रमम् । दुर्ज्जयश्चिन्तयामास रम्यमाश्रममण्डलम् ।। ११.

Śrī Varāha said: Then, seeing that hermitage of Gauramukha, King Durjaya reflected on its delightful surroundings.

प्रविशाम्यत्र पश्यामि ऋषीन् परमधार्मिकान् । चिन्तयित्वा तदा राजा प्रविवेश तमाश्रमम् ।। ११.

"I shall enter here and see the supremely righteous sages." Thinking thus, the king entered that hermitage.

तस्य प्रविष्टस्य ततो राज्ञः परमहर्षितः । चकार पूजां धर्मात्मा तदा गौरमुखो मुनिः ।। ११.

When the king had entered, the virtuous sage Gauramukha, filled with great joy, offered him worship.

स्वागतादिक्रियाः कृत्वा कथान्ते तं महामुनिः । स्वशक्त्याऽहं नृपश्रेष्ठ सानुगस्य च भोजनम् ।। ११.

After performing the customary words of welcome, the great sage said at the end of their conversation, "O best of kings, I shall provide food for you and your retinue to the best of my ability."

करिष्यामि प्रमुच्यन्तां साधु वाहा इति द्विजः । एवमुक्त्वा स्थितस्तूष्णीं स मुनिः संशितव्रतः ।। ११.

"I will do so; let your horses be unyoked, O noble one," said the sage, and then, observing his vow, he remained silent.

राजाऽपि तस्थौ तद्भक्त्या स्वसहायैः समन्वितः । अक्षौहिण्यो बलस्यास्य पञ्चमात्रास्तदा स्थिताः । अयं च तापसः किं मे दास्यते भोजनं त्विह ।। ११.

The king too stood there with devotion, accompanied by his attendants; at that time, five divisions of his army were present. He wondered, "What food will this ascetic give me here?"

निमन्त्र्य दुर्जयं विप्रस्तदा गौरमुखो नृपम् । चिन्तयामास किं चास्य मया देयं तु भोजनम् ।। ११.

Then the sage Gauramukha invited Durjaya the king and pondered, "What food should I give him?"

एवं चिन्तयतस्तस्य महर्षेर्भावितात्मनः । स्थितो मनसि देवेशो हरिर्नारायणः प्रभुः ।। ११.

As that great sage, intent in mind, was thinking thus, Lord Hari Nārāyaṇa, the lord of the gods, became present in his heart.

ततः संस्मृत्य मनसा देवं नारायणं तदा । तोषयामास गङ्गायां प्रविश्य मुनिसत्तमः ।। ११.

Then, remembering the god Nārāyaṇa in his mind, the best of sages entered the Gaṅgā to propitiate him.

धरण्युवाच । कथं गौरमुखो विष्णुं तोषयामास भूधर । एतन्मे कौतुकं श्रोतुं सम्यगिच्छा प्रवर्त्तते ।। ११.

The Earth said: How did Gauramukha please Viṣṇu, O mountain? I have a keen desire to hear this in detail.

नमोऽस्तु विष्णवे नित्यं नमस्ते पीतवाससे । नमस्ते चाद्यरूपाय नमस्ते जलरूपिणे ।। ११.

Salutations always to Viṣṇu; salutations to you, who wear yellow garments. Salutations to you, who have the primordial form; salutations to you, who take the form of water.

नमस्ते सर्वसंस्थाय नमस्ते जलशायिने । नमस्ते क्षितिरूपाय नमस्ते तेजसात्मने ।। ११.

Salutations to you, who abide in all things; salutations to you, who recline upon the waters. Salutations to you, who take the form of the earth; salutations to you, whose essence is fire.

नमस्ते वायुरूपाय नमस्ते व्योमरूपिणे । त्वं देवः सर्वभूतानां प्रभुस्त्वमसि हृच्छयः ।। ११.

Salutations to you, who take the form of air; salutations to you, who take the form of space. You are the Lord of all beings, you are the master, and you are the desire within the heart.

त्वमोङ्कारो वषट्कारः सर्वत्रैव च संस्थितः । त्वमादिः सर्वदेवानां तव चादिर्न विद्यते ।। ११.

You are the syllable Oṃ, you are the vaṣaṭ call, and you are present everywhere. You are the origin of all the gods, and no origin exists for you.
