कुर्यान्निरामिषं तत्र दिनानि त्रीणि निश्चितः
He should observe a strict vegetarian diet there for three days.
ममाग्रतो वरारोहे प्रज्वाल्य च हुताशनम्
In my presence, on the altar, he should kindle the sacred fire.
ततः शिष्यो गुरुश्चैव दीक्षितः शुचिरुत्तमः 128.
Then, both the disciple and the guru, initiated and supremely pure, [should proceed].
मन्त्रः – या धारिता पूर्वपितामहेन ब्रह्मण्यदेवेन भवोद्भवेन
Mantra: That which was upheld by the ancient forefathers, by the god devoted to Brahman, by Bhavodbhava.
तत एतेन मन्त्रेण गुरुर्गृह्य गणान्तिकम्
Then, with this mantra, the guru should take [the disciple] to the assembly of attendants.
मन्त्रः – नारायणस्य दक्षिणगात्रजातां स्वशिष्य गृह्णीष्व समयेन देवीम्
Mantra: O disciple, with the proper rite, receive the goddess born from the southern branch of Narayana.
धरण्युवाच प्रसाधनविधिं चैव केन मन्त्रेण कल्पयेत्
The Earth spoke: By which mantra should the procedure for adornment be established?
अकर्मण्येन मुच्येत तव कर्मपरायणः
One devoted to action is freed by the non-action of yours.
धर्मसंयुक्तवाक्येन प्रत्युवाच वसुन्धराम्
He replied to Vasundhara with words joined to righteousness.
श्रीवराह उवाच स्नानस्यैवोपचाराणि यानि कुर्वन्ति कर्म्मिणः
Sri Varaha said: The procedures for bathing that practitioners perform—
वृत्तेष्वेवोपचारेषु जलप्राधानिकेषु च
Only in those procedures, which are primarily concerned with water—
यथा मन्त्रेण दातव्यं तच्छृणुष्व वसुन्धरे
Hear from me, O Vasundhara, how it should be given with the mantra.
अञ्जनं कङ्कतीं चैव शीघ्रमेव प्रसादयेत् 128.
He should quickly prepare the collyrium and the comb.
अञ्जलौ कङ्कतीं गृह्य इमं मन्त्रमुदाहरेत्
Taking the comb in his hands, he should recite this mantra.
मन्त्रः – एतां कङ्कतीमञ्जलिस्थां प्रगृह्य प्रसीद नारायण शिरः प्रसाधि हि
Mantra: Having taken this comb placed in the hands, be gracious, Narayana; adorn the head.
महानुभाव विश्वनेत्रे स्वनेत्रे याभ्यां पश्यसे त्वं त्रिलोकीम्
O great one, O lord of the universe, with your own eyes you see the three worlds.
ततः संस्नापयेद्देवं मन्त्रेणानेन सुव्रतम्
Then, with this mantra, he should bathe the virtuous deity.
मन्त्रः – देवदेव स्नानीयमिदं मम कल्पितं सुवर्णकलशं गृहाण प्रसीद एषोऽञ्जलिर्मया परिकल्पितः स्नाहि स्नाहीति
Mantra: O god of gods, this bathing rite prepared by me, accept the golden vessel; be gracious. This handful of water has been arranged by me; bathe, bathe.
नमो नारायणेत्युक्त्वा इमं मन्त्रमुदीरयेत्
Having uttered 'Salutations to Nārāyaṇa,' one should recite this mantra.
य एतेन विधानेन मम कर्मणि दीक्षितः कुशिष्याय न दातव्या पिशुनाय शठाय च
He who, according to this procedure, is initiated into my rite—this is not to be given to an unworthy disciple, nor to a slanderer or a deceitful person.
एषा चैव वरारोहे गृहीत्वा गणनान्तिका
And this, O beautiful one, having taken it, is to be kept near the counting beads.
उत्तमाष्टाधिकशतं पंचाशत्तुर्यमध्यमा 128.
The best one consists of one hundred and eight, the middle one is fifty-four, and the lowest is thirty-two.
रुद्राक्षैरुत्तमा सा तु मध्यमा पुत्रजीवकैः
The best is made with rudrākṣa beads, the middle with putrajīva seeds.
एतत्कश्चिन्न जानाति जन्मान्तरशतैरपि
No one knows this even in hundreds of lifetimes.
नोच्छिष्टः संस्पृशेत्तां तु स्त्रीणां हस्ते न कारयेत्
One who is impure should not touch it, nor should it be placed in the hands of women.
न दर्शयेच्च कस्यापि चिन्तयित्वा तु पूजयेत्
Nor should it be shown to anyone; having reflected, one should worship it.
एवं हि विधिपूर्वेण पालयेत गणान्तिकाम्
Thus, according to the prescribed rule, one should preserve the counting beads.
एवं विष्णोर्वचः श्रुत्वा धरणी संशितव्रता
Having heard these words of Viṣṇu, the earth, steadfast in her vow, spoke.
दर्पणं ते कथं देयं तन्ममाख्याहि माधव
How should the mirror be given? Tell me that, O Mādhava.
धरण्यास्तद्वचः श्रुत्वा वराहः पुनरब्रवीत्
Hearing these words of the earth, Varāha again spoke.
