शिष्यमेव यतो दृष्ट्वा गृहीत्वा च कमण्डलुम्
Seeing only the disciple, and taking up the water-pot,
मन्त्रः – विष्णुप्रसादेन गतोऽसि सिद्धिं प्राप्ता च दीक्षा सकमण्डलुश्च
By the grace of Viṣṇu, you have attained success; initiation and the water-pot have been obtained.
ततो मुखपदं कृत्वा दीक्षितो गुरुणा तथा
Then, having made the mouth-utterance, the disciple is thus initiated by the guru.
अधोऽधो भूत्वा यद्यहं भ्राम्यल्लँब्धो गुरुर्विष्णुदीक्षा च लब्धा
If I, becoming lower and lower, wander—then the guru and Viṣṇu-initiation are obtained.
एतेन मन्त्रेण मुखपदं कारयेत्
With this mantra, one should perform the mouth-utterance.
एवं वै वास आदत्ते गृह्ण वत्स कमण्डलुम्
In this way, he receives the garment; take the water-pot, dear one.
मन्त्रः – गृह्णीष्व गन्धपात्राणि सर्वगन्धं सुखोचितम् 127.
Mantra: Take the vessels of fragrance, all the agreeable perfumes.
मधुपर्कं गृहीत्वा च त्विमं मन्त्रमुदीरयेत्
Taking the madhuparka, he should recite this mantra.
ततो गृहीत्वा चरणौ गुरोर्यत्नात्सुतोषयेत् गुरूपदिष्टं सन्धार्य इमं मन्त्रमुदीरयेत्
Then, taking the guru's feet, he should please him with effort; retaining what the guru has instructed, he should recite this mantra.
मन्त्रः – शृण्वन्तु मे भागवतास्तु सर्वे गुरुश्च मे सर्वकामक्षयं चकार
Mantra: Let all the devotees listen to me, and my guru has fulfilled all desires.
एषागमे ब्राह्मणस्य दीक्षा भूमे ह्युदाहृता
In this scripture, the initiation of a brāhmaṇa on earth is thus declared.
एतेनैव विधानेन दीक्षयेत वसुन्धरे
By this very procedure, O Earth, one should perform initiation.
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे ब्राह्मणदीक्षासूत्रं नाम सप्तविंशत्यधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the Śrī Varāha Purāṇa, the one hundred and twenty-seventh chapter named 'The Sutra on Brāhmaṇa Initiation'.
अथ कङ्कताञ्जनदर्पणम् क्षत्रियस्य प्रवक्ष्यामि तच्छृणुष्व वसुन्धरे
Now, I shall explain the ritual of the mirror, collyrium, and girdle for a kṣatriya; listen to this, O Earth.
पूर्वमन्त्रेण मे भूमे तस्य दीक्षां च कारयेत्
With the previous mantra, O Earth, one should perform his initiation.
तानि सर्वाणि चानीय एकं वर्ज्यं यशस्विनि
Bringing all those things, O illustrious one, except for one.
पालाशं दण्डकाष्ठं च दीक्षायां न तु कारयेत्
One should not use a palāśa stick as the staff during initiation.
आश्वत्थं दण्डकाष्ठं तु दीक्षायां तदनन्तरम्
After that, one should use an aśvattha stick as the staff in the initiation.
सर्वं ममोक्तं कर्त्तव्यं यच्च मे पूर्वभाषितम्
Everything I have spoken must be done, as well as what I have previously declared.
चरणौ मम संगृह्य इमं मन्त्रमुदाहरेत्
Taking hold of my feet, one should recite this mantra.
मन्त्रः – त्यक्तानि विष्णो शस्त्राणि त्यक्तं सर्वं क्षत्रियकर्म सर्वम्
Mantra: O Viṣṇu, all weapons have been renounced, all kṣatriya duties have been abandoned.
एवं ततो वचश्चोक्त्वा क्षत्रियो मम पार्श्वतः
Thus, after speaking these words, the kṣatriya remains at my side.
मन्त्रः – नाहं शस्त्रं देवदेव स्मृशामि परापवादं न च देव ब्रवीमि 128.
Mantra: O god of gods, I do not touch weapons, nor do I utter slander, O Lord.
तत एवं वचो ब्रूते सर्वं चैवात्र पूजयेत्
Then, having spoken thus, one should worship everything here.
यथोक्तेनैव तान्भूमे भोजयेत्तदनन्तरम्
After that, one should offer them food on the ground as previously instructed.
एषा वै क्षत्रिये दीक्षा देवि संसारमोक्षणम्
This, O goddess, is the initiation for a kṣatriya, which brings liberation from worldly existence.
वैश्यस्य चैव वक्ष्यामि शृणु तत्त्वेन सुन्दरि
Now I shall explain the initiation for a vaiśya; listen to the truth of it, O beautiful one.
त्यक्त्वा तु वैश्यकर्माणि मम कर्मपरायणः
Having abandoned vaiśya duties, he becomes devoted to my service.
सर्वं तत्र समानीय यन्मया पूर्वभाषितम्
Everything previously spoken by me should be gathered there.
लेपयेद्गोमयेनादौ पूर्वन्यायेन तत्र वै
First, the place should be smeared with cow dung, as before.
