Varaha Purana

एवमुक्ते ततस्तौ तु दुर्ज्जयः प्राह धर्मवित् । कौ भवन्ताविति ततस्तावूचतुररिंदमौ । विद्युत्सुविद्युन्नामानावसुराविति मानद ।। १०.

When this was said, Durjaya, knowledgeable in dharma, asked, 'Who are you?' Then those two, destroyers of enemies, replied: 'We are the Asuras named Vidyutsu and Vidyunna, O giver of honor.'

त्वया सम्प्रति चेच्छामो धर्म्यं सत्सु सुसंस्कृतौ । लोकपालमतं सर्वमावां कुर्म सुदुर्जय ।। १०.

'If you now desire, O Durjaya, we will carry out all the duties of the guardians of the worlds, in a righteous and well-arranged manner among the virtuous.'

एवमुक्ते दुर्ज्जयेन तौ स्वर्गे सन्निवेशितौ । लौकपालौ कृतौ सद्यस्ततोऽन्तर्धानं जग्मतुः ।। १०.

When Durjaya spoke thus, those two were established in heaven as guardians of the worlds; immediately, they became invisible.

तयोरपि महत्कर्म चरितं च धराधरे । भविष्यति महाराजो दुर्जयो मन्दरोपरि ।। १०.

Their great deeds performed on the mountain will also be recounted; King Durjaya will be on Mandara.

धनदस्य वनं दिव्यं दृष्ट्वा नन्दनसन्निभम् । मुदा बभ्राम रम्येऽस्मिन् स यावद्राजसत्तमः ।। १०.

Seeing the divine forest of Dhanada, resembling Nandana, the excellent king wandered joyfully in that delightful place.

तावत्सुवर्णवृक्षाधः कन्याद्वयमपश्यत । अतीवरूपसंपन्नमतीवाद्भुतदर्शनम् ।। १०.

There, beneath golden trees, he saw two maidens, exceedingly beautiful and wondrous to behold.

दृष्ट्वा तु विस्मयाविष्टः क इमे शुभलोचने । एवं संचिन्त्य यावत् स क्षणमेकं व्यवस्थितः । तस्मिन् वने तावदुभौ तापसौ सोऽवलोकयत् ।। १०.

Seeing them, filled with astonishment, he wondered, 'Who are these with auspicious eyes?' Thus reflecting, he stood for a moment; meanwhile, he observed two ascetics in that forest.

तौ दृष्ट्वा सहसा राजा ययौ प्रीत्या परां मुदम् । अवतीर्य द्विपात् तूर्णं नमश्चक्रे तयोः स्वयम् ।। १०.

Seeing them, the king immediately approached with great joy, quickly dismounted from his elephant, and personally offered them obeisance.

उपविष्टः स ताभ्यां तु कौश्ये दत्ते वरासने । पृष्टः कस्त्वं कुतश्चासि कस्य वा किमिह स्थितः ।। १०.

Seated with them on a fine seat made of silk, he was asked: 'Who are you? Where have you come from? Whose are you, and why are you here?'

तौ प्रहस्याब्रवीद् राजा सुप्रतीकेति विश्रुतः । तस्य पुत्रः समुत्पन्नो दुर्जयो नाम नामतः ।। १०.

The king, renowned as Supratīka, laughed and said to them: 'A son has been born to me, named Durjaya.'

पृथिव्यां सर्वराजानो जिगीषन्निह सत्तमौ । आगतोऽस्मि ध्रुवं चैव स्मर्त्तव्योऽहं तपोधनौ । भवन्तौ कौ समाख्यातं ममानुग्रहकाङ्क्षया ।। १०.

Desiring to conquer all the kings on earth, I have come here, O noble ones; you ascetics should always remember me. Who are you both, tell me, for you seem to seek my favor.

तापसावूचतुः । आवां हेतृप्रहेत्राख्यौ मनोः स्वायंभुवः सुतौ । आवां देवविनाशाय गतौ स्वो मेरुपर्वतम् ।। १०.

The ascetics said: 'We are called Hetṛ and Prahetṛ, sons of Manu Svāyambhuva. We came to Mount Meru for the destruction of the gods.'

तत्रावयोर्महासैन्यं गजाश्वरथसंकुलम् । जिगाय सर्वदेवानां शतशोऽथ सहस्त्रशः ।। १०.

There, our great army, crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots, defeated the hosts of all the gods by the hundreds and thousands.

ते च देवा महत्सैन्यं दृष्ट्वा सर्वं निपातितम् । असुरैरुज्झितप्राणं ततस्ते शरणं गताः ।। १०.

Seeing their entire mighty army struck down and their lives taken by the demons, the gods then sought refuge.

क्षीराब्धौ यत्र देवेशो हरिः शेते स्वयं प्रभुः । तत्र विज्ञापयामासुः सर्वे प्रणतिपूर्वकम् ।। १०.

Where Lord Hari, the master of the gods, himself rests in the ocean of milk, there all the gods approached him with reverence and supplication.

देवदेव हरे सर्वं सैन्यं त्वसुरसत्तमैः । पराजितं परित्राहि भीतं विह्वल्लोचनम् ।। १०.

'O God of gods, Hari, all our army has been defeated by the foremost of demons; protect us, for we are afraid and our senses are bewildered.'

त्वया देवासुरे युद्धे पूर्वं त्राताः स्म केशव । सहस्त्रबाहोः क्रूरस्य समरे कालनेमिनः ।। १०.

'In the past, O Keśava, you protected us in the battle between gods and demons, against the cruel Kālanemi with a thousand arms.'

इदानीमपि देवेश असुरौ देवकण्टकौ । हेतृप्रहेतृनामानौ बहुसैन्यपरिच्छदौ । तौ हत्वा त्राहि नः सर्वान् देवदेव जगत्पते ।। १०.

'Now also, O Lord of the gods, these two demons, named Hetṛ and Prahetṛ, thorns to the gods and possessing great armies—slay them and save us all, O God of gods, Lord of the universe.'

एवमुक्तस्ततो देवो विष्णुर्नारायणः प्रभुः । अहं यास्यामि तौ हन्तुमित्युवाच जगत्पतिः ।। १०.

Thus addressed, the god Viṣṇu, Nārāyaṇa, the Lord, said: 'I will go to slay those two,' so spoke the Lord of the universe.

एवमुक्तास्ततो देवा मेरुपर्वतसन्निधौ । प्रतस्थुस्तेऽथ मनसा चिन्तयन्तो जनार्दनम् ।। १०.

After being thus addressed, the gods departed to the vicinity of Mount Meru, setting out while contemplating Janārdana in their minds.

तैः संचिन्तितमात्रस्तु देवश्चक्रगदाधरः । आवयोः सैन्यमाविश्य एक एव महाबलः ।। १०.

As soon as they thought of him, the god bearing the discus and mace entered our army, alone, yet of great might.

एकधा दशधात्मानं शतधा च सहस्त्रधा । लक्षधा कोटिधा कृत्वा स्वभूत्या च जगत्पतिः ।। १०.

The Lord of the universe, by his own power, made himself one, ten, a hundred, a thousand, a hundred thousand, and ten million forms.

एवं स्थिते देववरे अस्मत्सैन्ये महाबलः । यः कश्चिदसुरो राजन्नावयोर्बलमाश्रितः । स हतः पतितो भूमौ दृश्यते गतचेतनः ।। १०.

O King, as the mighty god thus stood in our army, any demon who relied on our strength was struck down, fallen to the earth, lifeless.

एवं तत् सहसा सैन्यं मायया विश्वमूर्तिना । निहतं साश्वकलिलं पत्तिद्विपसमाकुलम् ।। १०.

Thus, in an instant, the entire army, filled with horses, elephants, and foot soldiers, was destroyed by the wondrous power of the universal form.

चतुरङ्गं बलं सर्वं हत्वा देवो रथाङ्गधृक् । आवां शोषावथो दृष्ट्वा गतोऽन्तर्द्धानमीश्वरः ।। १०.

Having slain the entire fourfold army, the god bearing the discus vanished from our sight, O King, after we beheld our forces dried up.

आवयोरीदृशं कर्म दृष्टं देवस्य शार्ङ्गिणः । ततस्तमेव शरणं गतावाराधनाय वै ।। १०.

Such was the deed of the bow-bearing god that we witnessed; therefore, we sought refuge in him alone, to worship him.

त्वं चास्मन्मित्रतनयः सुप्रतीकात्मजो नृप । इमे च आवयोः कन्ये गृहाण मनुजेश्वर । हेतृकन्या सुकेशी तु मिश्रकेशी प्रहेतृणः ।। १०.

And you, O king, are the son of our friend, Supratīka; these are our daughters—accept them, O lord of men. Hetṛ's daughter is Sukeśī, and Prahetṛ's is Miśrakeśī.

दुर्जयस्त्वेवमुक्तस्तु हेतृणा ते उभे शुभे । कन्ये जग्राह धर्मेण भार्यार्थं मनुजेश्वरः ।। १०.

Thus addressed by the matchmakers, King Durjaya lawfully took both auspicious maidens as wives.

ते लब्ध्वा सहसा राजा मुदा परमया युतः । आजगाम स्वकं राष्ट्रं निजसैन्यसमावृतः ।। १०.

Having obtained them, the king, filled with great joy, swiftly returned to his own kingdom, surrounded by his army.
