कृष्णाजिनं च पालाशं दण्डं चैव कमण्डलुम्
A black antelope skin, palāśa wood, a staff, and a water pot.
यन्त्रिकामर्घपात्रं च चरुस्थालीं सदर्विकाम्
A ritual vessel for offerings, a ladle, and a cooking pot with a spoon.
भक्ष्यभोज्यान्नपानं च कर्मण्यांश्चैव संचयान्
Food to be eaten and enjoyed, drink, and other necessary provisions for the rite.
यानि कानि च बीजानि रत्नानि विविधानि च
Whatever seeds there are, and various kinds of gems.
एतान्येवोपहार्याणि गुरुमूले ततः परम्
These alone should be offered at the teacher’s feet, and nothing else.
गुरोस्तु चरणौ गृह्य ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते
Taking hold of the teacher’s feet, say, 'What shall I do for you?'
ब्राह्मणो दीक्षमाणस्तु चतुरस्रां तु षोडशहस्तां कृत्वा तत्र च कलशोपरि युञ्जेत् ।। 127.
The brahmin who is to be initiated should make a square sixteen cubits across, and there, above it, place the water vessel.
प्रतिष्ठाप्य विधानेन धान्योपरिदृढं नवम्
Having established firmly, according to the rule, a new layer of grain above it.
तस्योपरि तिलैः पूर्णपात्रं स्थाप्य विधानतः
Upon that, place a vessel filled with sesame seeds, as prescribed.
तत्रार्चनविधिं कृत्वा गुरुधर्मविनिश्चयः
There, having performed the worship ritual, the teacher’s duties are determined.
चतुरः कलशान्दद्याच्चतुष्पार्श्वेषु सुन्दरि
Place four water vessels on the four sides, O beautiful one.
सर्वतः शुक्लसूत्रेण वेष्टयेत तथानघे
All around, bind it with a white thread in the same way, O sinless one.
एवं मन्त्रं ततः कृत्वा दद्याद्दीक्षाप्रयोजकः
Having thus performed the mantra, the one who initiates should give the consecration.
यथान्यायं च संगृह्य गुरुकर्मविनिश्चितः
Having gathered everything according to proper procedure, and determined the duties of the teacher,
उपस्पृश्य यथान्यायं भूत्वा पूर्वमुखस्ततः
Having purified himself as prescribed, and facing east,
यस्तु भागवतान्दृष्ट्वा स्वयं भागवतः शुचिः
He who, being pure, sees the devotees and himself is a devotee,
कन्यां दत्त्वा पुनस्तांस्तु कर्मणा नोपपादयेत् 127.
Having given the maiden, he should not again engage those people in the act.
भार्यां प्रियसखीं यस्तु साध्वीं हिंसति निर्घृणः
He who, without compassion, harms his virtuous wife or beloved companion,
ब्रह्मघ्नश्च कृतघ्नश्च गोघ्नश्च कृतपातकाः
A killer of a Brahmin, an ingrate, a killer of a cow—these are grave sinners.
बिल्ववृक्षोदुम्बरौ च तथा चान्ये कदाचन
The bilva and udumbara trees, as well as others at any time,
यदीच्छेत्परमां सिद्धिं मोक्षधर्मं सनातनम्
If one desires the highest attainment, the eternal law of liberation,
करीरस्य वधः शस्तः फलान्यौदुम्बरस्य च
The killing of the karīra is permitted, as are the fruits of the udumbara.
न भक्षणीयं वाराहं मांसं मत्स्याश्च सर्वशः
One should not eat pork or any kind of fish.
परीवादं न कुर्वीत न हिंसां वा कदाचन
One should not engage in slander or violence at any time.
अतिथिं चागतं दृष्ट्वा दूराध्वानं गतं क्वचित्
Upon seeing a guest who has arrived, having traveled a long distance,
गुरुपत्नी राजपत्नी ब्राह्मणस्त्री कदाचन
The wife of the teacher, the wife of the king, and the wife of a Brahmin—never,
कनकादीनि रत्नानि यौवनस्था च कामिनी 127.
Gold and other gems, and a woman in the prime of youth,
दृष्ट्वा परस्य भाग्यानि आत्मनो व्यसनं तथा
Upon seeing another's fortune and one's own misfortune,
एवं ततः श्रावयीत दीक्षाकामं वसुन्धरे
Thus, O Earth, he should instruct the one desiring initiation.
द्वे द्वे औदुम्बरस्य पत्रे वेदिमध्ये तु स्थापयेत्
He should place two leaves of the udumbara tree in the middle of the altar.
