स कालरूपिणं रौद्रं प्रकृत्या शूलपाणिनम् । आत्मनो राजसीं मूर्तिं पूजयामास भक्तितः । तामसेनापि भावेन असुरेषु व्यवस्थितः ।। १०.
He, in the form of time, fierce by nature and bearing a trident, worshipped his own rajasic form with devotion; and with the tamasic disposition, he abided among the asuras.
एवं त्रिधा जगद्धाता भूत्वा देवान् महेश्वरः । आराधयामास ततो लोकोऽपि त्रिविधोऽभवत् ।। १०.
Thus, having become the threefold sustainer of the world, Maheśvara worshipped the gods; then the world, too, became threefold.
ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेशाननाम्ना गृह्य व्यवस्थितः । स च नारायणो देवः कृते युगवरे प्रभुः ।। १०.
He, known by the names Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Maheśa, was established; and that god Nārāyaṇa, the Lord, was supreme in the Kṛta Yuga.
त्रेतायां रुद्ररूपस्तु द्वापरे यज्ञमूर्तिमान् । कलौ नारायणो देवो बहुरूपो व्यजायत ।। १०.
In the Tretā Yuga, he appeared as Rudra; in the Dvāpara, as the embodiment of sacrifice; in the Kali Yuga, the god Nārāyaṇa manifested in many forms.
तस्यादिकृत्ततो विष्णोश्चरितं भूरितेजसः । श्रृणुष्व सर्वं सुश्रोणि गदतो मम भामिनि ।। १०.
Now, O beautiful-hipped lady, listen as I recount in full the deeds of Viṣṇu, the one of great splendor, as they were first performed—hear them all as I narrate, O fair one.
आसीत् कृतयुगे राजा सुप्रतीको महाबलः । तस्य भार्याद्वयं चासीदविशिष्टं मनोरमम् ।। १०.
In the Kṛta Yuga there was a king named Supratīka, mighty in strength; he had two wives, both equally charming and delightful.
विद्युत्प्रभा कान्तिमती तयोरेते तु नामनी । तयोः पुत्रं समं राजा न लेभे यत्नवानपि ।। १०.
Vidyutprabhā and Kāntimatī were the names of those two; though the king strove earnestly, he did not obtain a son from either of them.
यदा तदा मुनिश्रेष्ठमात्रेयं वीतकल्मषम् । तोषयामास विधिना चित्रकूटे नगोत्तमे ।। १०.
Then, at that time, he pleased the foremost sage, Ātreya, pure of sin, by proper rites on the excellent mountain Citrakūṭa.
सक ऋषिस्तोषितस्तेन दीर्घकालं वरार्थिना । वरं दिदित्सया यावदब्रवीदत्रिजो मुनिः ।। १०.
That sage, gratified by the king who longed for a boon and served him for a long time, was moved to grant a boon, and so the sage, son of Atri, spoke.
तावदिन्द्रोऽपि करिणा गतः पार्श्वेन तस्य ह । देवसैन्यैः परिवृतस्तूष्णीमेव महाबलः ।। १०.
Meanwhile, mighty Indra also arrived there on his elephant, surrounded by the armies of the gods, remaining silent.
तं दृष्ट्वाऽन्तर्गतप्रीतिमप्रीतिं प्रीतवान् मुनिः । चुकोप देवराजाय शापमुग्रं ससर्ज ह ।। १०.
Seeing him, the sage, pleased inwardly yet outwardly displeased, grew angry with the king of the gods and pronounced a fierce curse upon him.
यस्मात् त्वया ममावज्ञा कृता मूढ दिवस्पते । ततस्त्वं चालितो राज्यादन्यलोके वसिष्यसि ।। १०.
Because you have shown me disrespect, O foolish lord of heaven, therefore you will be cast down from your kingdom and dwell in another world.
एवमुक्त्वाऽपि कोपेन सुरेशं तं च भूपतिम् । उवाच राजन् पुत्रस्ते भविता दृढविक्रमः ।। १०.
Having thus spoken in anger to the lord of the gods, the sage also addressed the king: 'O king, your son will be firm in valor.'
इन्द्ररूपोपमः श्रीमानुद्यच्छस्त्रः प्रतापवान् । विद्याप्रभावकर्म्मज्ञः क्रूरकर्मा भविष्यति । दुर्जयोऽतिबली राजा एवमुक्त्वा गतो मुनिः ।। १०.
He will be glorious, resembling Indra in form, radiant, skilled in weapons, renowned for his prowess, learned in the arts and actions of Vidyutprabhā, and though fierce in deeds, he will be a king unconquerable and exceedingly strong—so spoke the sage and departed.
सोऽपि राजा सुप्रतीको भार्यायां गर्भमावहत् । विद्युत्प्रभायां धर्मज्ञः साऽपि काले त्वसूयत ।। १०.
Then King Supratīka, righteous, caused his wife Vidyutprabhā to conceive; in due time, she gave birth.
तस्याः पुत्रः समभवद् दुर्जयाख्यो महाबलः । जातकर्मादिसंस्कारं तस्य चक्रे मुनिः स्वयम् । (दुर्वासा नाम तपसो तस्य देहमकल्मषः ।। १०.
Her son was born, named Durjaya, mighty in strength; the sage himself performed his birth and other sacraments—he was the ascetic Durvāsas, pure in body.
) तस्य चेष्टेर्बलेनासौ मुनेः सौम्यो बभूव ह । वेदशास्त्रार्थविद्यायां पारगो धर्मवान् शुचिः ।। १०.
By the power of the sage's actions, that son became gentle; he mastered the meaning of the Vedas and scriptures, was righteous and pure.
या द्वितीयाऽभवत् पत्नी तस्य राज्ञो महात्मनः । नाम्ना कीर्त्तिमती धन्या तस्याः पुत्रो बभूव ह । नाम्ना सुद्युम्न इत्येवं वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः ।। १०.
The second wife of that great king was named Kīrtimatī, blessed; her son was called Sudyumna, who mastered the Vedas and their branches.
अथ कालेन महता स राजा राजसत्तमः । सुप्रतीकः सुतं दृष्ट्वा दुर्जयं योग्यमन्तिके ।। १०.
Then, after a long time, that best of kings, Supratīka, seeing his son Durjaya fit for rule, drew him near.
आत्मनो वृद्धभावं च वाराणस्याधिपो बली । चिन्तयामास राज्यार्थं दुर्जयं प्रति भामिनि ।। १०.
As he himself grew old, the powerful lord of Vārāṇasī considered the matter of the kingdom with regard to Durjaya, O fair one.
एवं संचिन्त्य धर्मात्मा तस्य राज्यं ददौ नृपः । स्वयं च चित्रकूटाख्यं पर्वतं स जगाम ह ।। १०.
Thus reflecting, the righteous king gave the kingdom to Durjaya, and himself went to the mountain called Citrakūṭa.
दुर्जयोऽपि महद्राज्यं हस्त्यश्वरथवाजिभिः । संयोज्य चिन्तयामास राज्यवृद्धिं प्रति प्रभुः ।। १०.
Durjaya, having obtained the great kingdom with elephants, horses, chariots, and cavalry, considered how to increase the realm.
एवं संचिन्त्य मेधावी हस्त्यश्वरथपत्तिभिः । समेतां वाहिनीं कृत्वा उत्तरां दिशमाश्रितः । तस्य चोत्तरतो देशाः सर्वे सिद्धा महात्मनः ।। १०.
Thus reflecting, the wise one assembled an army of elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry, and took refuge in the northern direction. All the regions to the north belonged to that great soul, the Siddhas.
भारताख्यमिदं वर्षं साधयित्वा सुदुर्जयः । ततः किंपुरुषं नाम वर्षं तेनापि साधितम् ।। १०.
Having conquered this land called Bhārata, which is very difficult to overcome, he then subdued the region named Kimpuruṣa.
ततः परतरं चान्यद्धरिवर्षं जिगाय सः । रम्यं हिरण्मयं चापि कुरुभद्राश्वमेव च । इलावृतं मेरुमध्यमेतत् सर्वं जिगाय सः ।। १०.
After that, he conquered another region, Hari-varṣa, which is delightful and golden, as well as Kurubhadrāśva. He also subdued Ilāvṛta, the central region of Meru; he conquered all these.
जित्वा जम्ब्वाख्यमेतद्धि द्वीपं यावदसौ नृपः । जगाम देवराजानं जेतुं सर्वसुरान्वितम् ।। १०.
Having conquered the island called Jambū, the king proceeded to defeat the king of the gods, accompanied by all the deities.
मेरुपर्वतमारुह्य देवगन्धर्वदानवान् । गुह्यकान् किं नरान् दैत्यांस्ततो ब्रह्मसुतो मुनिः । नारदो दुर्जयजयं देवराजाय शंसत ।। १०.
Ascending Mount Meru, the sage Narada, son of Brahma, announced Durjaya’s victory over the gods, Gandharvas, Dānavas, Guhyakas, Kinnaras, and Daityas to the king of the gods.
तत इन्द्रस्त्वरायुक्तो लोकपालैः समन्वितः । जगाम दुर्जयं हन्तुं सोऽचिरेणास्त्रनिर्ज्जितम् । विहाय पर्वतं मेरुं मर्त्यलोकमिहागतः ।। १०.
Then Indra, urged by haste and accompanied by the guardians of the worlds, went to destroy Durjaya, who had quickly conquered with weapons, leaving Mount Meru and coming to the mortal realm.
पूर्वदेशे च देवेन्द्रो लोकपालैः समं प्रभुः । स्थितवांस्तस्य सुमहच्चरितं संभविष्यति ।। १०.
In the eastern region, the lord Indra, together with the guardians of the worlds, remained; a great event concerning him would occur.
दुर्जयश्च सुराञ्जित्वा यावत् प्रतिनिवर्त्तते । गन्धमादनपृष्ठे तु स्कन्धावारनिवेशनम् । कृत्वाऽवस्थितसंभारमागतं तापसौ तु तम् ।। १०.
Durjaya, having defeated the gods, returned and established his camp on the slopes of Gandhamādana, arranging his supplies; then two ascetics approached him.
