Varaha Purana

मन्त्रश्च- तद्भगवन्त्वां गुणश्च आत्मनश्चापि गृह्ण वारिणः सर्वदेवतानां मुखमेव प्रक्षालयेत् 118.

The mantra is: 'O Lord, accept yourself, your qualities, and your own self with water; let the mouth of all the deities be washed.'

ततः पुष्पाञ्जलिं दत्त्वा भगवन् भक्तवत्सल

Then, offering a handful of flowers, O Lord, lover of devotees—

मन्त्रज्ञानां यज्ञयष्टारं भूतस्रष्टारमेव च

To the knower of mantras, the performer of sacrifice, and indeed the creator of beings—

कायं निपतितं कृत्वा प्रसीदेति जनार्द्दनम्

Having made the body prostrate, one should propitiate Janardana.

मन्त्रैर्लब्ध्वा संज्ञां त्वयि नाथ प्रसन्ने त्वदिच्छातो ह्यपि योगिनां चैव मुक्तिः

Having obtained recognition through mantras, when you are pleased, O Lord, even liberation for yogis comes by your will.

. यतस्त्वदीयः कर्मकरोऽहमस्मि त्वयोक्तं यत्तेन देवः प्रसीदतु

Because I am your servant, performing actions for you; may the god be pleased by what you have instructed.

एवं मन्त्रविधिं कृत्वा मम भक्तिव्यवस्थितः

Thus, having performed the rite of mantra, established in devotion to me—

एवं सर्वं समादाय मम कर्म दृढव्रतः

Thus, having undertaken everything, steadfast in my action—

ततः स्नेहं समुद्दिश्य मंत्रज्ञः कर्मकारकः

Then, with affection in mind, the knower of mantras, the doer of actions—

मंत्रा ऊचुः सर्वलोकेषु सिद्धात्मा ददाम्यात्मकरेण च ।। 118.

The mantras said: 'In all worlds, I am the accomplished self, and I grant (boons) by my own act.'

मया प्रोक्तः क्षमस्वेति तुभ्यं चैव नमो नमः

'What I have spoken, forgive; and to you, indeed, salutations again and again.'

दक्षिणाङ्गं ततोऽभ्यज्याद्वाममङ्गं ततोऽनु च

Then one should anoint the right limb, and then the left limb thereafter.

पश्चालिम्पेत्ततो भूमिं गोमयेन दृढव्रतः

Then, with firm resolve, one should smear the western part of the ground with cow dung.

यानि पुण्यान्यवाप्नोति तानि मे गदतः शृणु

Hear from me what merits are attained by performing these acts.

तावद्वर्षसहस्राणि स्वर्गलोके महीयते

For as many thousands of years, one is honored in the heavenly realm.

एकैककणसंख्यातः स्वर्गलोके महीयते

For each grain counted, one is exalted in the heavenly world.

तावद्वर्षसहस्राणि मम लोके प्रतिष्ठति

For as many thousands of years, one remains established in my world.

येन शुध्यन्ति चाङ्गानि मम प्रीतिश्च जायते

By which the limbs are purified, and my delight arises.

मधूकमश्वपर्णं वा रोहिणं चैव कर्कटम्

Madhuka, Ashvaparna, Rohini, and Karkata—

करेण तस्य चूर्णेन पिष्टचूर्णेन वा पुनः 118.

With the powder of these, or again with finely ground powder in the hand.

यदीच्छेत्परमां सिद्धिं मम कर्मानुसारकः

If one desires supreme accomplishment, following my prescribed actions,

तत आमलकं चैव वसुगन्धार्णमुत्तमम्

Then, take amalaki and the finest fragrant earth.

जलकुम्भं ततो गृह्य इमं मन्त्रमुदाहरेत्

Afterward, taking a water vessel, recite this mantra.

तव व्यक्तस्वरूपेण स्नानं गृह्णीष्व मेऽनघ

With your manifest form, accept the bath from me, O sinless one.

अथ सौवर्णकुम्भेन रजतस्य घटेन वा

Then, with a golden vessel or a silver pot,

ताम्रकुम्भमयेनैव कुर्यात्स्नपनमुत्तमम्

Or with a copper vessel, one should perform the excellent ablution.

पश्चाद्गन्धः प्रदातव्यः प्रकृष्टो मन्त्रसंयुतः

Afterward, a fragrant substance should be offered, accompanied by mantra.

उत्पन्नाः सर्वलोकेषु त्वया सत्येषु योजिताः

Born in all worlds, you are united with the true ones.

मम भक्त्या सुसन्तुष्टः प्रतिगृह्णीष्व माधव

Satisfied by my devotion, accept, O Madhava.
