यस्तु प्राणान्प्रमुच्येत ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम्
When one relinquishes the vital breaths, what greater happiness can there be?
यस्तु जीवति संतुष्टः स सुखायोपपद्यते
One who lives contentedly is born for happiness.
या तोषयति भर्त्तारं ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम् 116.
When a woman pleases her husband, what greater happiness can there be?
निगृहीतेन्द्रियः पंच ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम्
When one restrains the five senses, what greater happiness can there be?
यस्येदं विदितं सर्वं ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम्
When one knows all this, what greater happiness can there be?
यस्तु प्राणान्प्रमुच्येत ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम्
When one relinquishes the vital breaths, what greater happiness can there be?
देवतेव सदा पश्येत्ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम्
When one always sees as the gods do, what greater happiness can there be?
अनन्यमानसो भूत्वा ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम्
When one becomes single-minded, what greater happiness can there be?
तस्याहं न प्रणश्यामि स च मे न प्रणश्यति सर्वलोकहितार्थाय यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि
I do not perish for him, nor does he perish for me; for the welfare of all worlds, you ask me these questions.
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे सुखदुःखनिरूपणं नाम षोडशाधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred sixteenth chapter, named 'The Delineation of Happiness and Suffering,' in the glorious Varaha Purana.
अथ द्वात्रिंशदपराधाः शृणु भद्रे महाश्चर्यमाहारविधिनिश्चयम्
Now, hear of the thirty-two offenses, O auspicious one, and the wondrous determination regarding the rules of food.
भुञ्जानो याति चाश्नाति मम योगाय माधवि
While eating, one goes and eats, O Madhavi, for my yoga.
आहारं चैव धर्मज्ञ उपभुञ्जीत नित्यशः
And the knower of righteousness should always partake of food.
अकर्मण्यानि वक्ष्यामि येन भोज्यंति मां प्रति
I shall declare the forbidden acts by which they consume me.
प्रथमं चापराधान्नं न रोचेत मम प्रिये
First, food obtained through transgression does not please me, dear one.
द्वितीयस्त्वपराधोऽयं धर्मविघ्नाय वै भवेत्
The second transgression, indeed, becomes an obstacle to righteousness.
तृतीयमपराधं तु कल्पयामि वसुंधरे
O Earth, I designate the third transgression.
चतुर्थमपराधं तु दृष्टं नैव क्षपाम्यहम्
As for the fourth transgression, if seen, I do not forgive it.
पंचमं चापराधं च न क्षमामि वसुंधरे
Nor do I forgive, O Earth, the fifth transgression.
षष्ठं तं चापराधं वै न क्षमामि वसुंधरे 117.
Nor do I forgive, O Earth, the sixth transgression.
सप्तमं चापराधं तु कल्पयामि वसुंधरे
O Earth, I designate the seventh transgression.
अष्टमं चापराधं च कल्पयामि वसुन्धरे
O Earth, I designate the eighth transgression.
नवमं चापराधं तं न रोचामि वसुन्धरे
O Earth, I do not approve of the ninth transgression.
दशमश्चापराधोऽयं मम चाप्रियकारकः
And this tenth transgression is displeasing to me.
एकादशापराधं तु कल्पयामि वसुंधरे
O Earth, I designate the eleventh transgression.
द्वादशं चापराधं तं कल्पयामि वसुंधरे
O Earth, I designate the twelfth transgression.
त्रयोदशं चापराधं कल्पयामि वसुन्धरे
O Earth, I designate the thirteenth transgression.
चतुर्द्दशापराधं तु कल्पयामि वसुन्धरे
O Earth, I designate the fourteenth transgression.
अपराधं पंचदशं कल्पयामि वसुंधरे
O Earth, I designate the fifteenth transgression.
षोडशं त्वपराधानां कल्पयामि वरानने 117.
O beautiful-faced one, I designate the sixteenth of the transgressions.
