ममार्चनविधिं कृत्वा मम लोके महीयते
Having performed my worship according to the prescribed method, he is honored in my world.
उचितेनोपचारेण दुःखमोक्षविनाशनम्
By proper service, the destruction of suffering and liberation from pain are attained.
यो मां नैव प्रपद्येत ततो दुःखतरं नु किम् 116.
Is there any greater suffering than for one who does not surrender to me?
यो न मां प्रतिपद्येत ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्

अदत्त्वा तस्य यो भुंक्ते ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्

तस्य देवा न चाश्नन्ति ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्

परोपतापी मन्दात्मा ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्
A person of weak mind who torments others—what could be more sorrowful than that?
मृत्युकालवशं प्राप्तस्ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्
One who has come under the power of death—what could be more sorrowful than that?
धावन्त्यस्याग्रतः पृष्ठे ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्
Those who run before or behind him—what could be more sorrowful than that?
शुष्कान्नं केचिदश्नन्ति ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्
Some eat dry food—what could be more sorrowful than that?
केचित्तृणेषु शेरन्ते ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्
Some sleep on grass—what could be more sorrowful than that?
केचिद्विरूपा दृश्यन्ते ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्
Some appear deformed—what could be more sorrowful than that?
केचिन्मूकाश्च दृश्यन्ते ततो दुःखतरं नु किम् 116.
Some are seen to be mute—what could be more sorrowful than that?
दरिद्रो जायते दाता ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्
A generous person is born into poverty—what could be more sorrowful than that?
एका तु दुर्भगा तत्र ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्
There, a woman is utterly unfortunate—what could be more sorrowful than that?
पापकर्मरता ह्यासन्ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्
Some are devoted to sinful deeds—what could be more sorrowful than that?
मामेव न प्रपद्यन्ते ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्
They do not take refuge in me—what could be more sorrowful than that?
सर्वभूताहितं पापं यत्त्वया परिपृच्छितम्
You have asked about the sin that brings harm to all beings.
तच्छृणुष्वानवद्याङ्गि मम कर्मविनिश्चयम्
Listen, O faultless one, to my decision regarding action.
यस्य बुद्धिर्विजायेत स दुःखायोपजायते
For whom understanding arises, for him suffering is born.
शेषमन्नं समश्नाति ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम्
One who eats leftover food—what could be more blissful than that?
कृत्वा सायाह्निकं कर्म ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम्
Having performed the evening rites—what could be more blissful than that?
यश्चात्मा वै समश्नाति ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम् 116.
And one who truly enjoys the self—what could be more blissful than that?
येन केनचिद्दत्तेन ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम्
With whatever is given by anyone—what could be more blissful than that?
पितरो यस्य तृप्यन्ति ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम्
When one's ancestors are satisfied, what greater happiness can there be?
अभिन्नमुखरागेण ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम्
When one has unwavering affection for all, what greater happiness can there be?
समं पश्यति यो देवि ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम्
O Devi, when one sees all as equal, what greater happiness can there be?
अहिंसोपरतः शुद्धः स सुखायोपजायते
One who is pure and abstains from violence is born for happiness.
यस्य चित्तं न गच्छेत्तु ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम्
When one's mind does not wander, what greater happiness can there be?
लोष्टवत्पश्यते यस्तु ततः सौख्यतरं नु किम्
When one regards all things as mere earth, what greater happiness can there be?
