सनत्कुमार उवाच अप्रमेयगतिं चैव धर्ममाचक्ष्व तत्त्वतः
Sanatkumāra said: 'Tell us truly about the dharma whose course is immeasurable.'
ततस्तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा प्रणम्य ऋषिपुंगवम्
Then, having heard his words, and bowing to the foremost of sages—
धरण्युवाच बाढमित्येव तां देवि स्वस्ति ब्रूहीति सोऽब्रवीत्
The Earth said: 'Certainly,' and to the goddess he said, 'Speak words of blessing.'
नष्टचन्द्रानिले लोके नष्टभास्करतारके
When the moon and wind had perished from the world, when the sun and stars were lost—
न वाति पवनस्तत्र नैव चाग्निर्न विद्युतः
There, the wind did not blow, nor was there fire, nor lightning.
वेदेषु चैव नष्टेषु मत्स्यो भूत्वा रसातलम् 113.
And when the Vedas too had disappeared, he became a fish and entered the waters of the netherworld.
अन्यद्देवः कूर्मरूपस्त्वं समुद्रस्य मन्थने
At another time, you took the form of a tortoise during the churning of the ocean.
पुनर्वराहरूपेण मां गच्छन्तीं रसातले
Again, in the form of a boar, you rescued me as I was sinking into the netherworld.
अन्यद्धिरण्यकशिपुर्वरदानेन दर्पितः
At another time, Hiranyakashipu, made arrogant by the boon he received, appeared.
पुनर्निःक्षत्ररूपेण त्वयाऽहं विकृता पुरा
Again, in the form of a man-lion, you destroyed me in ancient times.
पुनश्च रावणो रक्षः क्षयितं स्वेन तेजसा
Again, Ravana, the demon, was slain by your own power.
न च जानाम्यहं देव तव किंचिद्विचेष्टितम्
O God, I do not know anything of your activities.
सृष्ट्वा किमादिशः सर्वां न प्राज्ञायत किंचन
After creating everything, what did you command? Nothing at all was understood.
अंशवश्चन विद्यन्ते न नक्षत्रा न वा ग्रहाः
There were no rays, no stars, nor planets present.
शनैश्चरो बुधो नात्र न चेन्द्रो धनदो यमः
Saturn, Mercury, Indra, Kubera, and Yama were not here.
वर्जयित्वात्र त्रीन्देवान् ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेश्वरान् 113.
Except for the three gods—Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara—none were present here.
गत्वा च शरणं देवी दैन्यं वदति माधवी
Having sought refuge, the goddess Madhavi spoke humbly.
सपर्वतवनैः सार्द्धं मां तारय पितामह
O Grandfather, rescue me together with the mountains and forests.
मुहुर्तं ध्यानमास्थाय पृथिवीं तामुवाच ह
Having entered meditation for a moment, he addressed the earth.
लोकनाथं सुरश्रेष्ठमादिकर्त्तारमञ्जसा
He is the lord of the worlds, the foremost of gods, the original creator, directly.
सर्वेषामेव नः कार्यं यच्च किञ्चित्प्रवर्त्तते
Whatever action arises for any of us, it is all his work.
अनन्तशयने देवं शयानं योगशायिनम्
The god who lies on Ananta, resting in yogic sleep.
कृताञ्जलिपुटा देवी प्रसादयति माधवम् अहं भारसमायुक्ता ब्रह्माणं शरणङ्गता
With hands joined in reverence, the goddess pleaded with Madhava: 'I am burdened and have taken refuge with Brahma.'
प्रत्याख्याता भगवता तेनाप्युक्तमिदं वचः
Rejected by the Blessed Lord, he spoke these words.
स त्वां तारयितुं शक्तो मग्नासि यदि सागरे
If you are able to rescue me, who am submerged in the ocean,
भक्त्या त्वां शरणं यामि प्रसीद मम माधव 113.
With devotion I seek refuge in you; be gracious to me, O Mādhava.
वासवो वरुणश्चासि ह्यग्निर्मारुत एव च
You are Indra, you are Varuṇa, you are Agni, and you are also Vāyu.
मत्स्यः कूर्म्मो वराहश्च नरसिंहोऽसि वामनः
You are the Fish, the Tortoise, the Boar, the Man-Lion, and the Dwarf.
एवं पश्यसि योगेन श्रूयते त्वं महायशाः
Thus you are seen through yoga; you are heard of, O greatly renowned one.
पृथिवी वायुराकाशमापोज्योतिश्च पञ्चमम्
Earth, air, space, water, and fire as the fifth—
