पवित्राणां पवित्रं च मङ्गलानां च मङ्गलम्
She is the purest among the pure, and the most auspicious among all that is auspicious.
तपसस्तप एवाग्र्यं व्रतानां व्रतमुत्तमम्
She is the highest of austerities, the supreme of vows.
पृथिव्यां यानि तीर्थानि गुह्यान्यायतनानि च
Whatever sacred places and secret shrines exist on earth—
होतव्यान्यग्निहोत्राणि सायं प्रातर्द्विजातिभिः 112.
And the Agnihotra offerings that are to be made by twice-borns in the evening and morning—
जुह्वते ह्यग्निहोत्राणि मन्त्रैश्च विविधैः सदा
Indeed, the twice-born always offer Agnihotra with various mantras.
ते यान्त्यादित्यवर्णैश्च विमानैर्द्विजसत्तमाः
Those excellent twice-born ascend in aerial chariots shining with the radiance of the sun.
कपिला या पिङ्गलाक्षी सूर्यसौख्यप्रदायिनी
The tawny cow with reddish-brown eyes bestows the happiness of the sun.
पूर्वोक्ता यास्तु कपिलाः सर्वलक्षणलक्षिताः
Those tawny cows previously described, marked by all auspicious features,
संगमेषु प्रशस्ताश्च सर्वपापविनाशनाः
are praised at sacred confluences and destroy all sins.
तथाग्नायी तथा देवी सुवर्णाख्या प्रवर्तते
Likewise, the fire-born and the goddess known as Suvarṇā are also mentioned.
पतितैः स हि विज्ञेयश्चाण्डालसदृशोऽधमः
One who has fallen should be understood as the lowest, like a Caṇḍāla.
दूरात्ते परिहर्त्तव्याः श्वभिस्तुल्या इवाध्वरे
They must be avoided from afar, as one avoids dogs at a sacrifice.
असम्भाष्याः प्रतिग्राह्या शूद्रास्ते पापकर्मणः
Those Śūdras engaged in sinful acts are not to be spoken with or accepted.
भूमेर्मलं समश्नन्ति जायन्ते विड्भुजश्चिरम् 112.
They consume the filth of the earth and are born for a long time as dung-eaters.
उपजीवन्ति ये शूद्रास्तेषां गतिमतः शृणु
Hear now of the fate of those Śūdras who live by such means.
रौरवे तु महारौद्रे वर्षकोटिशतं धरे
In the dreadful hell called Raurava, they remain for a hundred million years.
शुनो योन्या विमुक्तास्तु विष्ठाभुक्कृमयस्ततः
Released from the womb of a dog, they become worms that eat excrement.
भूयोभूयो जायमानस्तथोत्तारं न विन्दति
Again and again they are born, yet do not attain deliverance.
ततः प्रभृत्यमेध्यान्तः पितरस्तस्य शेरते
From that time onward, their ancestors dwell among the impure.
स नित्यं वर्जनीयो हि दूरात्तु ब्राह्मणैर्धरे
He must always be shunned from afar by the brāhmaṇas on earth.
प्राजापत्यं चरेत्कृच्छ्रं तेन शुष्यति स द्विजः
A brāhmaṇa should perform the prājāpatya penance; by this, he is purified.
किमन्यैर्बहुभिर्दानैः कोटिसंख्यानविस्तरैः
What is the use of many other gifts, even those numbering in the millions?
आसन्नप्रसवां धेनुं दानार्थं प्रतिपालयेत
One should wait for a cow about to give birth, for the purpose of giving her as a gift.
जायमानस्य वत्सस्य मुखं योन्यां प्रदृश्यते 112.
The face of the calf about to be born is seen at the opening of the womb.
धेन्वा यावन्ति रोमाणि सवत्साया वसुन्धरे
O Earth, as many hairs as are on the body of a cow with her calf—
वसन्ति ब्रह्मलोके वै ये नित्यं कपिलाप्रदाः
Those who always give tawny cows dwell eternally in Brahma's world.
ब्राह्मणस्य करे दत्त्वा सुवर्णं रौप्यमेव च
Having placed gold or even silver in the hand of a Brahmin—
उदकं च करे दत्त्वा वाचयेच्छुद्धया गिरा
And having poured water into his hand, let him recite with pure speech.
रत्नपूर्णा भवेद्दत्ता पृथिवी नात्र संशयः
The earth thus given becomes filled with jewels—of this there is no doubt.
नन्दितो याति पितृभिर्विष्ण्वाख्यं परमं पदम्
Rejoiced by the ancestors, he attains the supreme abode called Vishnu's.
