Varaha Purana

विषुवे त्वयने पुण्ये युगादिग्रहणे तथा

At the solstice, at the sacred conjunction, and at the beginning of the age,

नृणां च ग्रहपीडासु दुःस्वप्नाद्भुतदर्शने

And for people afflicted by planets, after seeing bad dreams or wonders,

गोमयेनोपलिप्तायां दर्भानास्तीर्य वै तिलान्

On a cow smeared with cow dung, one should spread darbha grass and sesame seeds.

धूपदीपादिनैवेद्यैः पूजयेच्च विमत्सरः

He should worship with incense, lamps, and offerings, without envy.

भारेण चाधमा प्रोक्ता वित्तशाठ्यं विवर्जयेत् ।। चतुर्थांशेन वत्सं तु कल्पयित्वा विधानतः

The lowest is said to be by weight; one should avoid deceit in wealth. Having prepared the calf as a fourth part according to the rule,

कर्त्तव्या रुक्मशृङ्गी तु रजतस्य खुरान्विता

It should be made with golden horns and silver hooves.

इत्येवं सर्वसम्पूर्णा कृत्वा श्रद्धासमन्वितः

Thus, having made it complete in every way, with faith,

दद्याद्धेनुं चर्मपाणिः प्रयतः श्रद्धयान्वितः

One should give the cow with one's own hand, with effort and faith.

यया देवगणः सर्वस्त्वया हीनो न वर्त्तते 109.

By whom the entire host of gods exists; without you, none remains.

इति श्रीवराहपुराणे श्वेतविनीताश्वोपाख्याने कार्पासधेनुदानमाहात्म्यं नाम नवाधिकशततमोऽध्यायः

Thus ends the one hundred and ninth chapter, named 'The Greatness of Giving the Cotton Cow,' in the Śvetavinītāśva narrative of the glorious Varāha Purāṇa.

अथ धान्यधेनुदानमाहात्म्यम् शृणु राजन्प्रवक्ष्यामि धान्यधेनुमनुत्तमाम्

Now, the greatness of giving the grain cow; listen, O king, I shall declare the unsurpassed grain cow.

विषुवे चायने वापि कार्त्तिक्यां तु विशेषतः

At the solstice, or during the equinox, and especially in the month of Kārttika,

(तदिदानीं प्रवक्ष्यामि धान्यधेनुविधिं परम्) दशधेनुप्रदानेन यत्फलं राजसत्तम

(Now I shall explain the supreme rite of gifting grain and a cow.) O best of kings, the merit obtained by giving ten cows,

कृष्णाजिनं ततः कृत्वा प्राग्वत्संस्थापयेद्बुधः

Then, having prepared a black antelope skin, the wise one should place it as before.

उत्तमा तु भवेद्धेनुर्द्रोणैश्चापि चतुष्टयैः

The cow should be of the best kind, and furnished with four droṇas (measures) as well.

चतुर्थांशेन वत्सं तु कल्पयित्वा विधानतः

A calf should be arranged according to the rule, being a fourth part (of the cow).

कर्तव्यौ रुक्मशृङ्गौ तु राजतखुरसंयुतौ ।। गोमेदैः कुर्वीत घ्राणं अगुरुं चन्दनं तथा

The horns should be made of gold, and the hooves adorned with silver; the nose should be fashioned with gomeda gems, and also with aguru and sandalwood.

मुक्ताफलमया दंता घृतक्षौद्रमयं मुखम्

The teeth should be made of pearls, and the mouth of clarified butter and honey.

इक्षुपृष्टिमयाः पादाः क्षौम्यपुच्छसमन्विताम्

The legs should be made of sugarcane stalks, and the tail furnished with fine cloth.

पादुकोपानहच्छत्रभाजनं तर्पणं तथा 110.

Footwear, sandals, umbrella, vessel, and also offerings for satisfaction (should be given).

पूर्ववच्चार्च्चयित्वा तां कृत्वा दीपार्च्चनादिकम्

Having worshipped her as before, performing lamp offerings and the like,

त्रिः प्रदक्षिणमावृत्त्य दंडवत्प्रणमेच्च ताम्

He should circumambulate her three times and bow down in prostration.

मया दत्तां च गृह्णीष्व प्रसीद त्वं द्विजोत्तम

Please accept this which has been given by me; be gracious, O best of twice-born.

या च लक्ष्मीस्तु गोविन्दे स्वाहा या च विभावसौ

The fortune that is in Govinda, and that which is in fire,

गायत्री ब्रह्मणः प्रोक्ता ज्योत्स्ना चन्द्रे रवेः प्रभा

Gāyatrī, declared as the essence of Brahman; the moonlight in the moon, the radiance in the sun,

तस्मात्सर्वमयी देवी धान्यरूपेण संस्थिता

Therefore, the goddess who is the essence of all, abides in the form of grain.

दत्त्वा प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा तं क्षमाप्य द्विजोत्तमम्

Having given (the cow), circumambulating, and seeking forgiveness from the best of twice-born,

तावत्पुण्यं समधिकं व्रीहिधेनोश्च तत्फलम्

So much merit, and even more, is the fruit of gifting a rice-cow.

इहलोके च सौभाग्यमायुरारोग्यवर्द्धनम्

In this world, there is increase of good fortune, lifespan, and health.
