य इदं शृणुयाद्भक्त्या श्रावयेद्वापि मानवः
Whoever hears this with devotion, or causes it to be heard, that person—
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे श्वेतविनीताश्वोपाख्याने नवनीतधेनुदानमाहात्म्यंनाम सप्ताधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred and seventh chapter, entitled 'The Greatness of the Gift of the Butter-Cow,' in the Śvetavinītāśva narrative of the glorious Varāha Purāṇa.
अथ लवणधेनुदानमाहात्म्यम् लवणधेनुं प्रवक्ष्यामि तां निबोध नृपोत्तम
Now, the greatness of the gift of the salt-cow: I shall declare the salt-cow to you—listen, O best of kings.
अनुलिप्ते महीपृष्ठे कृष्णाजिनकुशोत्तरे
On a ground that has been smeared, with black antelope skin and sacred grass placed above,
वत्सं चतुर्भी राजेन्द्र इक्षुपादांश्च कारयेत्
He should make a calf with four feet, O king of kings, and also make its hooves of sugarcane.
मुखं गुडमयं तस्या दन्ताः फलमया नृप नेत्रे रत्नमये कुर्यात्कर्णौ पत्रमयौ तथा
Its mouth should be made of jaggery, its teeth of fruit, O king; its eyes should be made of gems, and its ears of leaves.
सूत्रपुच्छां ताम्रपृष्ठां दर्भरोमां पयस्विनीम्
With a tail of thread, a back of copper, hair of sacred grass, and yielding milk,
सुगन्धपुष्पधूपैश्च पूजयित्वा विधानतः
Having worshipped her properly with fragrant flowers and incense,
नक्षत्रग्रहपीडां च सर्वकालं प्रदापयेत्
He should cause the removal of affliction from stars and planets at all times.
द्विजाय साधुवृत्ताय वेदवेदाङ्गवेदिने
To a twice-born who is of good conduct, and learned in the Veda and its limbs,
वेदवेदाङ्गविदुषे श्रोत्रियायाहिताग्नये
To one who knows the Veda and its limbs, who is a Śrotriya and maintains the sacred fire,
इष्ट्वा चैवं च मन्त्रं तु पुच्छदेशोपविश्य च 108.
Having performed the worship and recited the mantra, and sitting near the tail,
आच्छाद्य वस्त्रयुग्मेन दक्षिणां कम्बलं ददेत्
He should cover her with a pair of garments and give a blanket as a gift.
ब्राह्मणं पूज्य विधिवत्पूर्वोक्तविधिना नृप
He should duly honor the Brahmin according to the previously stated procedure, O king.
इमं मन्त्रं समुच्चार्य ततस्तां प्रतिपादयेत्
Reciting this mantra, one should then offer her.
रसज्ञा सर्वभूतानां सर्वदेवनमस्कृता
She is the knower of taste among all beings, honored by all the gods.
दत्त्वा धेनुं तु लवणेनैकाहं चैव तिष्ठति
After giving the cow with salt, one should remain for a day.
सहस्रेण शतेनाथ स्वशक्त्या कनकेन तु
With a thousand or a hundred, or according to one's ability, with gold.
य इदं शृणुयाद्भक्त्या श्रावयेद्वापि मानवः
Whoever hears this with devotion, or causes it to be heard, O human,
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे श्वेतविनीताश्वोपाख्याने लवणधेनुमाहात्म्यं नाम अष्टाधिकशत तमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred and eighth chapter, named 'The Greatness of the Salt-Cow,' in the Śvetavinītāśva narrative of the glorious Varāha Purāṇa.
अथ कार्पासधेनुदानमाहात्म्यम् अथातः सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि धेनुं कार्पासकीं नृप
Now, the greatness of giving a cotton cow; I shall declare the cotton cow, O king.
विषुवे त्वयने पुण्ये युगादिग्रहणे तथा
At the solstice, at the sacred conjunction, and at the beginning of the age,
नृणां च ग्रहपीडासु दुःस्वप्नाद्भुतदर्शने
And for people afflicted by planets, after seeing bad dreams or wonders,
गोमयेनोपलिप्तायां दर्भानास्तीर्य वै तिलान्
On a cow smeared with cow dung, one should spread darbha grass and sesame seeds.
धूपदीपादिनैवेद्यैः पूजयेच्च विमत्सरः
He should worship with incense, lamps, and offerings, without envy.
भारेण चाधमा प्रोक्ता वित्तशाठ्यं विवर्जयेत् ।। चतुर्थांशेन वत्सं तु कल्पयित्वा विधानतः
The lowest is said to be by weight; one should avoid deceit in wealth. Having prepared the calf as a fourth part according to the rule,
कर्त्तव्या रुक्मशृङ्गी तु रजतस्य खुरान्विता
It should be made with golden horns and silver hooves.
इत्येवं सर्वसम्पूर्णा कृत्वा श्रद्धासमन्वितः
Thus, having made it complete in every way, with faith,
दद्याद्धेनुं चर्मपाणिः प्रयतः श्रद्धयान्वितः
One should give the cow with one's own hand, with effort and faith.
यया देवगणः सर्वस्त्वया हीनो न वर्त्तते 109.
By whom the entire host of gods exists; without you, none remains.
