क्षमादिगुणयुक्ताय दद्यात्तां दधिधेनुकाम्
One should give this curd-cow to one endowed with the virtues of forbearance and the like.
पादुकोपानहौ छत्रं दत्त्वा मंत्रमिमं पठेत्
After giving sandals, shoes, and an umbrella, one should recite this mantra.
एवं दधिमयीं धेनुं दत्त्वा राजर्षिसत्तम
Thus, having given the curd-cow, O best of royal sages,
यजमानो वसेद्राजंस्त्रिरात्रं च द्विजोत्तमः
The sacrificer should reside as a king for three nights, O best of twice-born.
य इदं शृणुयाद्भक्त्या श्रावयेद्वापि मानवः
Whoever listens to this with devotion, or causes it to be heard, O man,
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे श्वेतविनीताश्वापोख्याने दधिधेनुदानमाहात्म्यंनाम षडधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred and sixth chapter, entitled 'The Greatness of the Gift of the Curd-Cow,' in the Śvetavinītāśva narrative of the glorious Varāha Purāṇa.
अथ नवनीतधेनुदानमाहात्म्यम् नवनीतमयीं धेनुं शृणु राजन्प्रयत्नतः
Now, hear attentively, O king, about the greatness of the gift of the butter-cow, a cow made of fresh butter.
गोमयेनानुलिप्तायां भूमौ गोचर्ममानतः
On earth smeared with cow dung, one should respectfully place a cowhide.
कुम्भं तु नवनीतस्य प्रस्थमात्रस्य धारयेत्
One should set a pot containing one prastha of fresh butter.
कृत्वा विधानेन च राजसिंह सुवर्णशृङ्गी सुमुखा च कार्या
Having done so according to the injunction, O lion among kings, one should fashion her with golden horns and a beautiful face.
ओष्ठौ च पुष्पैश्च फलैश्च दन्ताः प्रकल्प्य सास्नां च सितैश्च सूत्रैः
Her lips should be made with flowers and fruits, her teeth arranged, and her dewlap with white threads.
नवनीतस्तनीं राजन्निक्षुपादां प्रकल्पयेत्
O king, one should form her with butter-udders and sugarcane legs.
स्वर्णशृङ्गीं रौप्यखुरां पंचरत्नसमन्विताम्
With golden horns, silver hooves, and adorned with five gems,
आच्छाद्य वस्त्रयुग्मेन गन्धपुष्पैरलंकृताम्
Covering her with a pair of cloths, and decorating her with fragrant flowers,
मन्त्रास्त एव जप्तव्याः सर्वधेनुषु ये स्मृताः
The very mantras prescribed for all cows should be recited.
उत्पन्नं दिव्यममृतं नवनीतमिदं शुभम् 107.
This fresh butter, born as divine nectar, is auspicious.
एवमुच्चार्य तां दद्याद्ब्राह्मणाय कुटुम्बिने
Having thus recited, he should give her to a householder Brahmin.
हविरेवं रसं चैव विप्रवर्यस्य भूपते
He should give the oblation and the essence likewise to the excellent Brahmin, O King.
यः प्रपश्यति तां धेनुं दीयमानां नरोत्तम
Whoever sees that cow being given, O best of men,
पितृभिः पूर्वजैः सार्द्धं भविष्यद्भिश्च मानवः
together with his ancestors and descendants, that person—
य इदं शृणुयाद्भक्त्या श्रावयेद्वापि मानवः
Whoever hears this with devotion, or causes it to be heard, that person—
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे श्वेतविनीताश्वोपाख्याने नवनीतधेनुदानमाहात्म्यंनाम सप्ताधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the one hundred and seventh chapter, entitled 'The Greatness of the Gift of the Butter-Cow,' in the Śvetavinītāśva narrative of the glorious Varāha Purāṇa.
अथ लवणधेनुदानमाहात्म्यम् लवणधेनुं प्रवक्ष्यामि तां निबोध नृपोत्तम
Now, the greatness of the gift of the salt-cow: I shall declare the salt-cow to you—listen, O best of kings.
अनुलिप्ते महीपृष्ठे कृष्णाजिनकुशोत्तरे
On a ground that has been smeared, with black antelope skin and sacred grass placed above,
वत्सं चतुर्भी राजेन्द्र इक्षुपादांश्च कारयेत्
He should make a calf with four feet, O king of kings, and also make its hooves of sugarcane.
मुखं गुडमयं तस्या दन्ताः फलमया नृप नेत्रे रत्नमये कुर्यात्कर्णौ पत्रमयौ तथा
Its mouth should be made of jaggery, its teeth of fruit, O king; its eyes should be made of gems, and its ears of leaves.
सूत्रपुच्छां ताम्रपृष्ठां दर्भरोमां पयस्विनीम्
With a tail of thread, a back of copper, hair of sacred grass, and yielding milk,
सुगन्धपुष्पधूपैश्च पूजयित्वा विधानतः
Having worshipped her properly with fragrant flowers and incense,
नक्षत्रग्रहपीडां च सर्वकालं प्रदापयेत्
He should cause the removal of affliction from stars and planets at all times.
द्विजाय साधुवृत्ताय वेदवेदाङ्गवेदिने
To a twice-born who is of good conduct, and learned in the Veda and its limbs,
