प्रशस्तपत्रश्रवणा प्रमाणात्परितस्तता
Its ears adorned with fine leaves, arranged all around in proper measure.
चत्वारि तिलपात्राणि चतुर्दिक्षु प्रकल्पयेत्
Place four sesame-leaf plates in the four directions.
कांस्योपदोहिनीं कृत्वा गन्धपुष्पैस्तु पूजिताम्
Having made a copper cow, and having worshipped it with fragrant flowers,
संक्रांत्यामुपरागे च सर्वकाले यदृच्छया
At the time of a solstice, eclipse, or at any time by one's own wish,
ब्राह्मणाय दरिद्राय श्रोत्रियायाहिताग्नये 104.
To a Brahmin who is poor, learned in the Vedas, and maintains sacred fires,
तादृशाय प्रदातव्या मधु धेनुर्नरोत्तमे
Such a person should be given the best cow with honey.
दद्याद्विप्राय धेनुं तां मन्त्रपूर्वां विचक्षणः आच्छाद्य वस्त्रयुग्मेन मुद्रिकावर्णमात्रकैः जलपूर्वं तु कर्त्तव्यं पश्चाद्यानं समर्पयेत्
One who is wise should give that cow to a Brahmin, preceded by mantras, covered with a pair of garments, adorned with rings, and after a water-ritual, should then offer the cow.
प्रीयन्तां पितरो देवा मधुधेनो नमोऽस्तु ते
May the ancestors and gods be pleased; O cow with honey, I bow to you.
अहं गृह्णामि त्वां देवि कुटुम्बार्थे विशेषतः
O goddess, I accept you, especially for the sake of my household.
मधुवातेति मन्त्रेण दद्यादाशुचिकेन तु
With the mantra 'Madhuvāt', one should give it, even if impure.
एवं यः कुरुते भक्त्या मधुधेनुं नराधिप
Thus, whoever with devotion gives a honey-cow, O king,
ब्राह्मणश्च त्रिरात्रं तु मधुपायससंयुतम्
And the Brahmin for three nights partakes of honey mixed with milk,
यत्र नद्यो मधुवहा यत्र पायसकर्दमाः
Where the rivers flow with honey, and the mud is of milk,
तत्र भोगानथो भुङ्क्ते ब्रह्मलोकं स गच्छति
There he enjoys pleasures, and attains the world of Brahma.
स भुक्त्वा विपुलान्भोगान्विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति 104.
Having enjoyed great pleasures, he then attains the world of Vishnu.
नयते विष्णुसायुज्यं मधुधेनुप्रदानतः सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति
By giving the honey-cow, he attains union with Vishnu, freed from all sins, he goes to the world of Vishnu.
इति श्रीवराहपुराणे श्वेतविनीताश्वोपाख्याने मधुधेनुमाहात्म्यं नाम चतुरधिकशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the Śrī Varāha Purāṇa, in the story of Śveta and Vinītāśva, the one hundred and fourth chapter named 'The Greatness of the Honey-Cow' is concluded.
अथ क्षीरधेनुदानविधिः क्षीरधेनुं प्रवक्ष्यामि तां निबोध नराधिप
Now, the procedure for giving a milk-cow: I shall explain the milk-cow, listen, O king.
गोचर्ममात्रमानेन कुशानास्तीर्य सर्वतः
With an area the size of a cowhide, one should spread kuśa grass all around.
तत्र कृत्वा कुण्डलिकां गोमयेन सुविस्तृताम्
There, one should make a circular altar, well-spread with cow-dung.
सुवर्णमुखशृङ्गाणि चन्दनागुरुकाणि च
With horns of gold and adorned with sandalwood and agarwood.
मुखं गुडमयं तस्या जिह्वां शर्करया तथा
Its mouth made of jaggery, and its tongue likewise of sugar.
इक्षुपादां दर्भरोमां सितकम्बलसंवृताम्
With sugarcane for feet, darbha grass for hair, and wrapped in a white blanket.
पुच्छं च नृपशार्दूल नवनीतमयस्तनीम्
And its tail, O king among men, with udders made of fresh butter.
चत्वारि तिलपात्राणि चतुर्दिक्ष्वपि विन्यसेत्
Place four vessels of sesame in all four directions.
धूपदीपादिकं कृत्वा ब्राह्मणाय निवेदयेत् 105.
After performing incense and lamp offerings, present it to a Brahmin.
पादुकोपानहौ छत्रं दत्त्वा दानं समर्पयेत्
Give shoes, sandals, and an umbrella, and offer the gift.
आप्यायस्वेति मन्त्रेण वेदोक्तेन विधानतः
With the mantra 'āpyāyasva', as prescribed in the Vedas, perform the ritual.
आप्यायस्वेति मन्त्रेण क्षीरधेनुं प्रसादयेत्
With the mantra 'āpyāyasva', please the cow that gives milk.
दीयमानां प्रपश्यन्ति ते यान्ति परमां गतिम्
Those who witness the giving attain the highest state.
