Varaha Purana

एवमभ्यर्च्य मेधावी गुरुं विष्णुमिवाग्रतः

Thus, the wise one worships the teacher, standing before him as before Vishnu.

क्षीरवृक्षसमुद्भूतं दन्तकाष्ठं समन्त्रकम् 99.

With a tooth-cleaning stick produced from the milk-bearing tree, accompanied by mantra, [he proceeds].

स्वप्नान्दृष्ट्वा गुरोरग्रे श्रावयेत विचक्षणः

Having seen dreams, the discerning one should relate them in the presence of the teacher.

एकादश्यामुपोष्यैवं स्नात्वा देवालयं व्रजेत्

Having fasted on the eleventh day, and bathed, one should go to the temple.

लक्षणैर्विविधैर्भूमिं लक्षयित्वा विधानतः

Having marked the ground according to various signs and proper procedure,

अथवा अष्टपत्रं च लिखित्वा दर्शयेद्बुधः

Or, having drawn an eight-petaled [lotus], the wise one should show it.

वर्णानुक्रमतः शिष्यान्पुष्पहस्तान्प्रवेशयेत्

According to the order of syllables, he should admit the disciples, each holding flowers.

तदानीं पूर्वतो देवमिद्रपूर्वं तु पूजयेत्

Then, he should worship the deity first in the east, as prescribed.

स्वदिक्षु तद्वद्याम्यायां नेर्ऋत्यां निर्ऋतिं न्यसेत्

In the respective directions, likewise, in the southeast and southwest, he should place Nirriti.

धनदं चोत्तरे न्यस्य रुद्रमीशानगोचरे। पूज्यैवं तु विधानेन दिक्क्षेत्रेषु व्यवस्थिताम्

He should place Dhanada in the north, Rudra in the domain of Ishana; thus, worshipping by the prescribed method those established in the directional fields.

पद्ममध्ये तथा विष्णुमर्च्चयेत्परमेश्वरम्

In the center of the lotus, likewise, he should worship Vishnu, the supreme Lord.

अनिरुद्धं तथा पूज्य पश्चिमे चोत्तरे तथा 99.

He should worship Aniruddha in the west, and similarly in the north.

ऐशान्यां विन्यसेच्छंखमाग्नेय्यां चक्रमेव तु

In the northeast, he should place the conch; in the southeast, the discus.

ऐशान्यां मुसलं पूज्य दक्षिणे गरुडं न्यसेत्

In the northeast, he should worship the mace; in the south, he should place Garuda.

धनुश्चैव तु खड्गं तु देवस्य पुरतो न्यसेत्। श्रीवत्सं कौस्तुभं चैव नवमं तत्र कल्पयेत्

He should place the bow and sword before the deity; and there, arrange the Srivatsa and Kaustubha as the ninth.

एवं पूज्य यथान्यायं देवदेवं जनार्द्दनम्

Thus, worshipping Janardana, Lord of gods, according to proper procedure.

श्रीकामं स्नापयेत्तद्वदैन्द्रेण तु घटेन ह

Desiring prosperity, he should bathe [the deity] likewise with the Indra vessel.

मृत्युञ्जयविधानाय याम्येन स्नपनं तथा

For the rite of conquering death, one should perform ablution with the water of Yama.

शान्तये वारुणेनाशु पापनाशाय वायवे

For peace, ablution with Varuna's water is swift; for the destruction of sin, with Vayu's.

रौद्रेण ज्ञानहेतोश्च लोकपालपदाप्तये

With Rudra's water, for the sake of knowledge and attainment of the status of the guardians of the worlds.

भवेदव्याहतं ज्ञानं श्रीमान्विप्रो विचक्षणः 99.

Thus, knowledge remains unobstructed for the prosperous, wise Brahmin.

जायते विष्णुसदृशः सद्यो राजाथवा भवेत् पूजयीत स्वशास्त्रोक्तविधानेन विधानवित्

He becomes instantly like Vishnu, or may become a king; the knower of rites should worship according to the prescribed method of his own scripture.

एवं सम्पूज्य देवांश्च लोकपालान् प्रसन्नधीः आग्नेयी वारुणी दग्धा वायुना विधिना ततः

Having thus worshipped the gods and the guardians of the worlds with a serene mind, the offerings for Agni, Varuna, and those burnt by Vayu should be made according to the rite.

सौमेनाप्यायिता पश्चाच्छ्रावयेत्समयान्बुधः

Then, nourished by Soma, the wise one should recite the prescribed vows.

रुद्रमादित्यमग्निं च लोकपालग्रहांस्ततः

Afterwards, Rudra, Aditya, Agni, and the planetary guardians of the worlds should be invoked.

एवं तु समयं ख्याप्य पश्चाद्धोमं तु कारयेत्

Thus, having proclaimed the vow, one should then perform the homa.

षोडशाक्षरमन्त्रेण होमयेज्ज्वलिताग्नये

With the sixteen-syllable mantra, one should offer oblations into the blazing fire.

त्रिभिराहुतिभिश्चापि देवदेवस्य सन्निधौ

And with three offerings, in the presence of the God of gods.

हस्त्यश्वकटकादीनि हेमग्रामादिकं नृपः

The king should donate elephants, horses, chariots, and golden villages.
