इदानीमात्मना सार्द्धं मुक्तिकालो मतोऽस्ति ते
Now, the time for your liberation, together with your self, has come.
यद्गत्वा न पुनर्जन्म भवतीति न संशयः
Having gone there, there is no further birth—of this there is no doubt.
ध्यात्वा नारायणं देवं तद्देहे तौ लयं गतौ
Meditating upon Lord Nārāyaṇa, both of them dissolved into that body.
श्रावयेद्वापि स नरो गतिमिष्टामवाप्नुयात्
Or if a man causes it to be heard, he attains the desired state.
अथ तिलधेनुमाहात्म्यम् या सा माया शरीरात्तु ब्रह्मणोऽव्यक्तजन्मनः
Now, the greatness of the sesame-cow: That very Māyā, from the body of Brahmā, the unmanifest-born—
सैव नन्दा भवेद्देवी देवकार्यचिकीर्षया
She herself becomes the goddess Nandā, wishing to accomplish the work of the gods.
वैष्णव्याख्या ततो देव कथमेतद्धि शंस मे द्वयं जगद्धिता देवी गङ्गा शङ्करसुप्रिया
O Lord, explain to me the Vaiṣṇava meaning of this: How is it so? The goddess Gaṅgā, beloved of Śaṅkara, is for the welfare of the world.
क्वचित्किंचिद्भवेद्दत्तं स्वपदं वेद सर्ववित्
Sometimes, something may be given; the all-knowing one knows his own place.
महिषाख्यः परः पश्चात्स वै चैत्रासुरो हतः
Then, the one called Mahiṣa, the great demon, was slain by him.
अथवा ज्ञानशक्तिः सा महिषोऽज्ञानमूर्त्तिमान्
Or, that power of knowledge is Mahiṣa, embodied as ignorance.
मूर्त्तिपक्षे चेतिहासममूर्ते चैकवद्धृदि
In the case of form, it is like a story; in the formless, it is held as one in the heart.
इदानीं शृणु मे देवि पंचपातकनाशनम्
Now, O goddess, hear from me about the destruction of the five great sins.
इह जन्मनि दारिद्र्यव्याधिकुष्ठादिपीडितः
In this life, one afflicted by poverty, disease, leprosy, and the like—
तस्य सद्यो भवेल्लक्ष्मीरायुर्वित्तं सुतः सुखम् 99.
For him, at once, there will be wealth, long life, riches, sons, and happiness.
नारायणं परं देवं यः पश्यति विधानतः
He who beholds Nārāyaṇa, the Supreme Lord, in the prescribed manner—
कार्तिके मासि शुक्लायां द्वादश्यां तु विशेषतः
Especially in the month of Kārtika, on the twelfth day of the bright fortnight—
संक्रांत्यां वा महाभागं चन्द्रसूर्यग्रहे तथा
Or at a solstice, or during an eclipse of the moon or sun—
तस्य सद्यो भवेत्तुष्टिः पापध्वंसश्च जायते
For him, satisfaction arises at once, and the destruction of sin occurs.
उपासन्नं ततो ज्ञात्वा हृदयेनावधारयेत्
Then, knowing that it is near, one should fix it in the heart.
संवत्सरं गुरोर्भक्तिं कुर्युर्विष्णोरिवाचलाम्
For a year, they should show unwavering devotion to the teacher, as to Viṣṇu.
भगवंस्त्वत्प्रसादेन संसारार्णवतारणम्
O Lord, by your grace, the crossing of the ocean of worldly existence is attained.
एवमभ्यर्च्य मेधावी गुरुं विष्णुमिवाग्रतः
Thus, the wise one worships the teacher, standing before him as before Vishnu.
क्षीरवृक्षसमुद्भूतं दन्तकाष्ठं समन्त्रकम् 99.
With a tooth-cleaning stick produced from the milk-bearing tree, accompanied by mantra, [he proceeds].
स्वप्नान्दृष्ट्वा गुरोरग्रे श्रावयेत विचक्षणः
Having seen dreams, the discerning one should relate them in the presence of the teacher.
एकादश्यामुपोष्यैवं स्नात्वा देवालयं व्रजेत्
Having fasted on the eleventh day, and bathed, one should go to the temple.
लक्षणैर्विविधैर्भूमिं लक्षयित्वा विधानतः
Having marked the ground according to various signs and proper procedure,
अथवा अष्टपत्रं च लिखित्वा दर्शयेद्बुधः
Or, having drawn an eight-petaled [lotus], the wise one should show it.
वर्णानुक्रमतः शिष्यान्पुष्पहस्तान्प्रवेशयेत्
According to the order of syllables, he should admit the disciples, each holding flowers.
तदानीं पूर्वतो देवमिद्रपूर्वं तु पूजयेत्
Then, he should worship the deity first in the east, as prescribed.
स्वदिक्षु तद्वद्याम्यायां नेर्ऋत्यां निर्ऋतिं न्यसेत्
In the respective directions, likewise, in the southeast and southwest, he should place Nirriti.
