दस्युसंसर्गसम्भूतो दस्युवत्समजायत
Having associated with outlaws, he became like an outlaw himself.
बभौ दुर्वाससा सम्यग्बोधितश्च विशेषतः
He shone forth, having been thoroughly instructed by Durvasa.
तस्यास्तीरे शिला दिव्या नाम्ना चित्रशिला धरे
On its bank there is a divine rock called Citraśilā, O Earth.
तत्र सत्यतपाः स्थित्वा तपः कुर्वन्महातपाः
There, Satyatapa, possessed of great austerity, stood performing penance.
चिच्छेद चांगुलीमेकां वामतर्जनिकां मुनिः
The sage cut off one finger, the left index finger.
न लोहितं न मांसं तु न मज्जा तत्र दृश्यते
No blood, no flesh, and no marrow were seen there.
तस्मिन् भद्रवटे चैकं मिथुनं किन्नरं स्थितम् ९८.
Near that auspicious banyan tree, a pair of kinnaras was present.
प्रभाते विमले प्राप्तमिन्द्रलोकमिति स्मृतिः
At dawn, in the clear light, it is remembered that they reached the world of Indra.
पृष्टाः किंचिदिहाश्चर्यमपूर्वं कथ्यतामिति
They were asked, 'Tell us something wonderful and unprecedented here.'
स्थितं किन्नरयोस्तच्च वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह
Standing there, the kinnaras spoke these words.
यदेतत्सत्यतपसः समवोचत्ततः शुभे
What they said about Satyatapa, O auspicious one, was as follows.
पुष्यभद्रानदी तीरे महदाश्चर्यमुत्तमम्
On the bank of the river Puṣyabhadrā, there was a great and excellent wonder.
स्रवणं भस्मनश्चैव श्रुतं सर्वं शशंस ह
They told everything they had heard about the flow of ashes.
आगच्छ विष्णो गच्छामो हिमवत्पार्श्वमुत्तमम्
'Come, O Vishnu, let us go to the excellent side of Himavat.'
एवमुक्तस्ततो विष्णुर्वाराहं रूपमग्रहीत्
Thus addressed, Viṣṇu then assumed the form of a boar.
विष्णुर्वाराहरूपेण ऋषिदृष्टिपथे स्थितः
Viṣṇu, in the form of a boar, stood within the sight of the sages.
तावदिन्द्रो धनुष्पाणिस्तीक्ष्णसायकधृग्वने ९८.
Meanwhile, Indra, holding a bow and sharp arrows, was in the forest.
भगवन्निह दृष्टस्ते वराहः पृथुलो महान्
O Lord, here you have been seen as a great and mighty boar.
एवमुक्तो मुनिस्तेन चिन्तयामास तत्क्षणात्
Thus addressed by him, the sage began to reflect at that very moment.
नो चेत्कुटुंबः क्षुधया सीदत्यस्य न संशयः
Otherwise, my household will surely perish from hunger—there is no doubt.
सशल्यश्च वराहोऽयं ममाश्रममुपागतः
This boar, wounded by a spear, has come to my hermitage.
नाध्यगच्छत बुद्धिश्च क्षणात्तस्य व्यजायत
He could not arrive at a decision, but after a moment, a thought arose in him.
दृष्टं चक्षुर्निहितं जङ्गमेषु जिह्वा वक्तुं मृगयौ तद्विसृष्टम्
His eyes were fixed on moving beings, his tongue sought to speak, and he desired what had been released.
न चातिरिक्तोऽस्ति वरः पृथिव्यां यद्दृष्टो मे पुरतो देवदेवाः
There is no greater boon on earth than that I have seen you, O Lord of gods, before me.
मुक्तिं चाहं व्रजामीति द्वितीयोऽस्तु वरो मम ९८.
And let liberation be my second boon—may I attain release.
अदर्शनं गतौ देवो सोऽपि तत्र व्यवस्थितः
The god became invisible and remained there as he departed.
यावदास्ते शुभे देशे कृतकृत्यो महामुनिः
As long as the great sage remained in that auspicious place, his purpose fulfilled,
पृथ्वीं प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य तीर्थहेतोर्विचक्षण
He circumambulated the earth for the sake of holy places, O wise one.
पाद्याचमनगोदानेः कृतासनपरिग्रहः
Having performed the rites of washing the feet, sipping water, and giving cows, he took his seat.
उवाच विनयापन्नं प्राञ्जलिं पुरतः स्थितम् पुत्र सिद्धोऽसि तपसा ब्रह्मभूतोऽसि सुव्रत
He spoke to the humble one, standing before him with joined palms: 'My son, you have succeeded through your austerity; you have become one with Brahman, O virtuous one.'
