'The vow of nakedness and bearing the skull, and the tawny vow you performed—'
'Having placed me first, O god, you are worshipped by those according to the proper rites.'
'Tell us, O great god, the proper procedure in brief.'
Pleased by the gods' victory-cry, he went to his abode on Kailāsa.
The gods too went to the sky and to their own places, just as they had come.
And whatever deeds of the god there were, became known on earth.
Thus ends the ninety-seventh chapter, entitled 'The Greatness of Rudra,' in the glorious Varaha Purana.
Now begins the chapter on the mountain; there was a certain brahmin named Satyatapa, who became greedy.
Durvasa, intent on fulfilling his vow, went to the mountain Himavat.
Tell me, O illustrious one, what kind of person he was; I am greatly curious, for Satyatapa was formerly a brahmin born in the lineage of Bhrigu.
Having associated with outlaws, he became like an outlaw himself.
He shone forth, having been thoroughly instructed by Durvasa.
On its bank there is a divine rock called Citraśilā, O Earth.
There, Satyatapa, possessed of great austerity, stood performing penance.
The sage cut off one finger, the left index finger.
No blood, no flesh, and no marrow were seen there.
Near that auspicious banyan tree, a pair of kinnaras was present.
At dawn, in the clear light, it is remembered that they reached the world of Indra.
They were asked, 'Tell us something wonderful and unprecedented here.'
Standing there, the kinnaras spoke these words.
What they said about Satyatapa, O auspicious one, was as follows.
On the bank of the river Puṣyabhadrā, there was a great and excellent wonder.
They told everything they had heard about the flow of ashes.
'Come, O Vishnu, let us go to the excellent side of Himavat.'
Thus addressed, Viṣṇu then assumed the form of a boar.
Viṣṇu, in the form of a boar, stood within the sight of the sages.
Meanwhile, Indra, holding a bow and sharp arrows, was in the forest.
O Lord, here you have been seen as a great and mighty boar.
Thus addressed by him, the sage began to reflect at that very moment.
Otherwise, my household will surely perish from hunger—there is no doubt.
