For another two years, Hara himself wandered from ford to ford, wishing to cast off the skull, but it did not fall from his hand.
Again, for another two years, he wandered through the universe for the sake of the fords.
Even as he tried to let it go, O bearer of beings, it would not fall from his hand.
Then, for another year, he remained on the Himālaya mountain.
Again, for another two years, the supreme lord Vṛṣākapi wandered.
Then, after some time, in the twelfth year, on the mountain,
O beautiful one, as long as the lord of gods bathed in the Gaṅgā,
Then, that ford became known as Kapālamocana, the unsurpassed holy place.
Having gone to the sacred place of Hari and Hara, and having bathed there at the divine ford,
There, after bathing and bowing at the place known as Trijaleśvara,
After twelve years had passed, along with the groups of boundary-guardians,
The holy site called Kapālamocana then arose, which removes sin.
Rudra attained purity there, freed from the sin of killing a Brahmin.
Where a man, immersed with devotion, even if a Brahmin-slayer, becomes purified.
Having come together with the gods, he spoke these words: 'O Rudra, wide-eyed, established on the path of the world—'
'O Rudra, with uneven eyes, standing on the path of the world, having wandered with the skull in your hand, fierce with the skull-hand—'
'And that which became tawny for you on the highest peak of the Himalaya—'
'And now, having become pure at this holy site, bodily purity is attained.'
'Those gods who, having placed you first, worship you according to the prescribed rites—'
'The vows they perform, O god, are indeed those you have established, O son.'
'The vow of nakedness and bearing the skull, and the tawny vow you performed—'
'Having placed me first, O god, you are worshipped by those according to the proper rites.'
'Tell us, O great god, the proper procedure in brief.'
Pleased by the gods' victory-cry, he went to his abode on Kailāsa.
The gods too went to the sky and to their own places, just as they had come.
And whatever deeds of the god there were, became known on earth.
Thus ends the ninety-seventh chapter, entitled 'The Greatness of Rudra,' in the glorious Varaha Purana.
Now begins the chapter on the mountain; there was a certain brahmin named Satyatapa, who became greedy.
Durvasa, intent on fulfilling his vow, went to the mountain Himavat.
Tell me, O illustrious one, what kind of person he was; I am greatly curious, for Satyatapa was formerly a brahmin born in the lineage of Bhrigu.
