यावन्त्यस्या महाशक्त्यास्तावद् रूपाणि शंकरः । कृतवांस्ताश्च भजते पतिरूपेण सर्वदा ।। ९५.
As many forms as there are of this great power, so many forms has Śaṃkara created, and he always assumes the role of their lord.
यश्चाराधयते तास्तु रुद्रस्तुष्टो भविष्यति । सिद्ध्यन्ते तास्तदा देव्यो मन्त्रिणो नात्र संशयः ।। ९५.
Whoever worships them, Rudra will be pleased; those goddesses and their attendants will grant success—there is no doubt about this.
अथ त्रिशक्तिरहरये रौद्रीव्रतम् या सा नील गिरि याता तपसे धृतमानसा
Now, the triple power for Hari: the fierce vow—she who went to the blue mountain, her mind set on austerity.
तपः कृत्वा चिरं कालं पालयाम्याखलं जगत्
Having performed austerity for a long time, she sustains the entire world.
तरयाः कालान्तरे देव्यास्तपन्यास्तप उत्तमम्
In another age, by the goddess's supreme austerity, the highest penance was accomplished.
समुद्रमध्ये रत्नाढ्यं पुरमस्ति महावनम्
In the midst of the ocean, there is a city rich in jewels, a great forest.
अनेकशतसाहस्रकेटिट्युत्तरोत्तरैः
With countless hundreds of thousands, increasing ever more.
कालेन महता चासौ लोकपालपुराण्यथ
Over a long period, those ancient cities of the guardians of the worlds came to be.
उत्तिष्ठतस्तस्य महासुरस्य समुद्रतोयं ववृथेऽतिमात्रम्
As that great asura rose, the ocean's waters swelled beyond measure.
अन्तःस्थितानेकसुरारि सङ्कवाद्विचित्रवमयुधचित्रशोभम्
Within it, many enemies of the gods were concealed, their weapons and armor shining with wondrous variety.
तत्र द्विपा दैत्यवरैरुपेताः समानघण्टायुत किंकिणीकाः
There, elephants adorned by the foremost daityas stood, decked with bells and jingling ornaments.
अश्वास्तथा काञ्चनपीठनद्धा रोडैस्तु युक्ताः सितचामरैश्च
Horses, harnessed to golden seats, were yoked with sturdy harnesses and white fly-whisks.
रथा रविस्यन्दनतुल्यवेगाः सुचक्रदण्डाक्षत्रिवेणुयुक्ताः
Chariots, swift as the sun's coursing, were fitted with fine poles, axles, and triple bamboo shafts.
तथैव योधाः स्थगितेतरेतास्ततर्षिको ये वरतूणपणियः
Likewise, warriors stood concealed, eager for battle, equipped with excellent quivers.
देवेषु चैव भरेषु विनिर्गत्य ज्दात्ततः
Emerging from the ranks of gods and demons, they entered the fray.
युयोध च सुरैः साढे रुदैत्यपतिस्तथा । सुदूर्मुसलधेरैः शरैर्दण्डायुधैस्तथा
The daitya lord fought fiercely with the gods, wielding heavy maces, arrows, and club-like weapons.
जनुदैरयाः सुरान्संख्य सुराश्चैव तथासुरान्
The asuras struck the gods in battle, and the gods likewise struck the asuras.
असुरैनिर्जिताः सद्यो दुद्रुवुर्विमुखा भृशम्
The asuras, suddenly defeated, fled in great confusion.
असुरः सर्वदेवानामन्वधावत वीर्यवान् । ततो देवगणाः सर्वे द्रवन्तो भयावह्वलाः
The powerful asura pursued all the gods; then all the hosts of gods fled, overwhelmed by fear.
नीले गिरिवर जग्मुर्यत्र देवी व्यवास्थता
They went to the lofty blue mountain, where the goddess was established.
संहारकारिणी देवी कालरात्रीत तां विदुः
The goddess, known as Kalaratri, was recognized as the agent of destruction.
मा भेप्टेत्युच्चकैदेवी तानुवाच सुरोत्तमान् किमियं व्याकुला देवा गतिर्व उपलक्ष्यते
The goddess spoke loudly to the best of the gods, 'Do not fear! Why are you so troubled, O gods? Is some danger perceived?'
कथयध्वं द्रुतं देवाः सर्वथा भयकार णम् ।। देवा ऊचुः । अयमायाति दैत्येन्द्रो रुरुभीमपराक्रमः
Speak quickly, O gods, of whatever causes fear. The gods said: 'The lord of the daityas approaches, fierce and mighty.'
एतस्य भातान् रक्षस्व त्वं देवान्परमेश्वार
Protect your brothers and the gods, O supreme ruler.
जहास परया प्रीत्या देवानां पुरतः शुभा
She smiled with great affection before the gods, radiant and auspicious.
याभिर्विश्वमिदं व्याप्तं विकृताभैरनेकशः
By whom this entire world is pervaded, transformed in countless ways.
सर्वाः शूलधरा भीमाः सर्वाश्चापधराः शुभाः ॥ ताः सः काटिशो देव्यस्त दे। वेष्टय संस्थिताः
All were fearsome, bearing spears; all were splendid, bearing bows. Those goddesses stood assembled in ranks.
युयुधुदानवैः सार्धं बद्धतूणा महाबलाः
They, mighty in strength, fought together with the Danavas, their quivers bound.
देवाश्च सर्वे सम्पन्ना युयुधुनगं बलम्
And all the gods, fully equipped, fought against the host of Nagas.
तत्सर्वं दानवबलमनयद्यमसादनम्
That entire force of Danavas was led to destruction by Yama.
