Rudra said: Now, the mountain valleys situated in the southern direction, inhabited by perfected beings, are described. Between the mountains Śiśira and Pataṅga lies the white land, where the creepers have shed their leaves and trees are sparse. On the summit of Ikṣukṣepa, adorned with trees, there is a delightful fig grove frequented by flocks of birds.
फलितं तद् वनं भाति महाकूर्मोपमैः फलैः ८०.
That grove shines with fruits resembling great tortoises.

There, many rivers flow with clear, sweet water. There is the hermitage of the lord Kardama, the progenitor, crowded with various sages. That forest is a perfect circle, measuring one hundred yojanas. Likewise, between the mountains Tāmrābha and Pataṅga, there is a great lake, a hundred yojanas wide and twice as long, adorned all around with lotuses like young suns, with countless petals, and inhabited by many perfected beings and gandharvas.

In the middle of that lake rises a great peak, a hundred yojanas long and thirty yojanas wide, adorned with many minerals and gems. Atop it is a grand avenue with jeweled gateways and arches. There is a great city of the vidyādharas, where the vidyādhara king Puloma resides, surrounded by a hundred thousand followers. Likewise, between the mountains Vikhākhā and Śveta, there is a lake. On its eastern shore is a great mango grove, filled everywhere with golden-hued, highly fragrant fruits the size of large jars. Gods and gandharvas dwell there.

There is the great abode of the god Āditya. Every month, the lord Sūrya, the progenitor, descends there. The gods and others worship him as the creator of time. Likewise, between Pañcakūṭa and Kailāsa, there is a land a thousand yojanas long and a hundred yojanas wide, white as a swan, inaccessible to lesser beings, appearing like a stairway to heaven.
Now, the mountain valleys situated in the western direction are described. Between the mountains Supārśva and Śikhi, there is a stretch of land, a hundred yojanas all around, with a rocky surface, always hot and difficult to touch. In its center is a circular area, thirty yojanas wide, which is the abode of fire. There, the divine Samvartaka fire, which destroys the worlds, blazes eternally without fuel. Between the mountains Kumuda and Añjana, there is a land a hundred yojanas wide called Ātuluṅgasthalī, inaccessible to all beings, covered with yellow fruits. There is a sacred lake frequented by perfected beings, and the forest of Bṛhaspati. Likewise, between the yellow and white mountains, there is a great valley, many hundreds of yojanas long, adorned with lotuses and filled with the humming of bees.

There is the supreme abode of Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme Lord. Likewise, between the great white and pale mountains, there is a rocky area, thirty yojanas wide and ninety yojanas long, devoid of trees. There is a clear pond with trees and a land-lotus, adorned with many kinds of lotuses. In its center stands a great banyan tree, five yojanas in size. There, the god Maheśvara, clad in blue garments, resides, worshipped by yakṣas and others. Between the mountain Sahasraśikhara and Kumuda, there is a peak fifty yojanas long and twenty yojanas wide, as high as Ikṣukṣepa, frequented by many birds, adorned with various fruits and sweet saps. There is the great hermitage of Indra, built by divine intention. Likewise, between Śaṅkhakūṭa and Ṛṣabha, there is the delightful land called Puruṣasthalī, many yojanas long, endowed with fragrant kaṅkolaka fruits the size of bilva fruits. There, intoxicated elephants and others dwell.

Likewise, between the mountains Kapiñjala and Nāga, there is a land two hundred yojanas long and wide, and a hundred yojanas in area, adorned with various forests, with clusters of grapes and dates, many trees and creepers, and many lakes. Likewise, between Puṣkara and Mahāmegha, there is a great land, sixty yojanas wide and a hundred yojanas long, flat as a palm, devoid of trees and shrubs. On its side are four great forests and lakes, each many yojanas in size. There are lands and valleys measuring ten, five, seven, eight, thirty, and twenty yojanas. Some of these are extremely terrifying due to the destruction of mountains.

Encircled by the clarified butter ocean, its extent is twice that. There are seven principal mountains, and as many regions and rivers. The mountains are: Sumahan, Pita, Shatakaumbha, Sarvagunasauvarna, Rohita, Sumanasa, Kushala, Jambunada, Vaidyuta—these are the clan-mountains and regions. Next, the sixth, Gomeda, is described. Just as Shalmala is surrounded by the Suroda ocean, so Suroda is surrounded by Gomeda, twice its size. There are two principal mountains: one is Tavasara, the other Kumuda. The ocean of sugarcane juice is twice surrounded by Pushkara. There, the mountain called Manasa is in the region called Pushkara, which is divided in two. It is surrounded by sweet water. Then comes the boundary. This is the measure of the earth, and the extent of the Brahmanda is up to the boundary. There is no count of such worlds. In every cycle, the Lord Narayana, in the form of a boar, enters the netherworld and lifts them up with a single tusk, establishing them. Thus, the path and the extent of the earth have been described. May you be blessed; I will depart for Kailasa, O twice-born.

Rudra said: Now, the abodes of the gods on the mountains are described. There, on the mountain called Shanta, is the playground of Mahendra. On that mountain is the grove of Parijata trees belonging to the king of the gods. On its eastern side is a mountain named Kunjara. Upon it are eight ancient cities of the Danavas. Likewise, on the excellent mountain Vajraka are many ancient cities of the Rakshasas, who are called Nilakas and are shape-shifters. On the great mountain Mahanila are the ancient cities of the Vidyadharas. There are fifteen thousand renowned cities of the Kinnaras. There, kings such as Devadatta and Chandra are the proud rulers of the Kinnaras. Those cities are golden, with entrances leading underground. On the excellent mountain Chandradaya is the abode of the Nagas. Their underground entrances are situated in caves, and the Danava lords, devoted to their own realms, are established there. On Venumati are three cities of the Vidyadharas, each extending a hundred yojanas in breadth and length. Kings of the Vidyadharas such as Ulukaroma and Mahavetra reside there. On each mountain king, Garuda himself is present. On the excellent mountain Kunjara, Pashupati always resides. The great god Mahadeva, bearing the bull, Shankara, the best of yogis, the lord with countless hosts, the primeval person, is established there. On Vasudhara is the abode of the Vasus and the flower-bearing ones. On the peaks of Vasudhara and Ratnadhara are eight and seven ancient cities, belonging to the Vasus and the Saptarishis. On the excellent mountain Ekashringa is the seat of Prajapati, Brahma with four faces. On Gajaparvata, the goddess herself, surrounded by the great elements, abides. On the excellent mountain Vasudhara is the dwelling of sages, Siddhas, and Vidyadharas. There are eighty-four other cities, with great walls and gateways. There, in the mountain called Anekaparvata, live the Gandharvas, skilled in battle. Their lord is the god Rajarajaikapingala. The Suras, Rakshasas, and Danavas have cities on Panchakuta and Shatashringa, and the Yakshas have a hundred cities. On Tamrabha is the hundred-citied city of Takshaka. On Vishakhaparvata is the abode of Guha. On the excellent mountain Shvetodaya is the great palace of the Gandharvas. On Harikuta is the god Hari. On Kumuda is the abode of the Kinnaras. On Anjana are the great serpents. On Sahasrashikhara is the abode of the Daityas, who are fierce in action. There are a thousand ancient cities of the Hemamalins. On Mukuṭa, on the wing of the mountain, are four abodes. Thus, on the mountains of Meru are the abodes of the gods. On the boundary mountain Devakuta, the layout of the cities is described. Upon it, at a distance of a hundred yojanas, is the birthplace of Garuda. On its side, there are seven Gandharva cities, each thirty yojanas wide and forty yojanas long. The Gandharvas there are called Agneyas, powerful by name. There also is a city, thirty yojanas in circumference, belonging to the Simhikeyas. There, on Devakuta, the deeds of the divine sages are seen. The city of the Kalakeyas is also there. Likewise, on the southern inner slope, there is a city called Sunan, thirty yojanas wide and sixty-two yojanas long, belonging to the proud shape-shifters. In the middle of Hemakuta is the banyan tree of Mahadeva. Now, the description of Kailasa is given. On the slope of Kailasa, there is a region a hundred yojanas long, adorned with a garland of worlds. In its center is an assembly hall. There stands the celestial palace called Tatpushkara. That palace is the abode of Dhanada. There, the great treasures Padma, Mahapadma, Makara, Kacchapa, Kumuda, Shankha, Nila, Nanda, and Mahānidhi reside. There is the abode of the guardians of the worlds, beginning with Chandra. There flows the river Mandakini, and also the rivers Kanakamanda and Manda by name. There are other rivers as well. On the eastern side, there are ten Gandharva cities, each a hundred yojanas long and thirty yojanas wide, ruled by kings such as Sakubahuharikesha and Citrasena. On the western peak, there are forty Yaksha cities, each eighty yojanas long and forty yojanas wide. Among them, Mahamali, Sunetra, and Chakra are the leaders. On the southern side, in the caves of Kunjadari, are a hundred cities of the Kinnaras, extending to the ocean. Among them, there are a hundred kings, headed by Druma and Sugriva. There, the marriage of Rudra and Uma took place. Gauri performed austerities, and Rudra, in the form of a hunter, remained there. There, Soma and Shankara, standing together, surveyed Jambudvipa. There, the grove of Uma, sung by many Kinnaras and Gandharvas, is adorned with many flowering creepers, where the blessed Maheshvara attained the form of Ardhanarishvara. There is the autumnal forest of Kartikeya. Between Pushpa and Citrakrauncha, Kartikeya was anointed, and on its eastern slope is the abode of the Siddha sages, called Kalapagrama. There are thousands of hermitages of great sages such as Markandeya, Vasishtha, Parashara, Nala, Vishvamitra, and Uddalaka. Now, hear of the part of the western mountain king, Nishadha. On its central peak is the abode of Vishnu and Mahadeva. On its northern slope is a great city called Lamba, thirty yojanas wide, belonging to the Rakshasas. On its southern side is an underground city. To the west of Prabhedaka are the ancient cities of the gods, Danavas, and Siddhas. On the summit of that mountain is the great Soma rock. On it, during the full moon, Soma himself descends. On its northern side is Trikuta. There, Brahma abides at times. Likewise, there is the abode of Agni, who is worshipped by the gods in embodied form.

Rudra said: Now listen to the descent of the rivers. The so-called sky-ocean, renowned by that name, gives rise to the river that flows through the sky. This river is constantly agitated by Indra's elephant. It rises to a height of eighty-four thousand (units). It creates a splendid view of Mount Meru. From the edge of Meru's peaks, it splits and becomes fourfold. Falling without support for sixty thousand yojanas, it circles Meru and proceeds in four directions, named Sita, Alakananda, Chakshubhadra. According to their course, these rivers break through hundreds of thousands of mountains and reach the earth, thus called Ganga. Next, on the side of Gandhamadana mountain, Amaragandika is described, measuring thirty-one thousand yojanas in length and four hundred in breadth. There, all the Ketumala peoples reside: the men are dark-skinned and mighty, the women are lotus-colored and beautiful. Great jackfruit trees grow there. The lord is a son of Brahma. From the wells there, people live for ten thousand years, free from old age and disease. On the eastern side of Malyavat mountain is Purvagandika, measuring one thousand yojanas from a single peak. There are the Bhadrasva people and the Bhadrasala forest. The men are white, the women are water-lily colored, and their lifespan is ten thousand years. There are five clan-mountains: Shailavarna, Malakhya, Koraja, Triparna, and Nila. The regions named after these mountains are inhabited by those who dwell in their waters. These regions drink from the rivers: Sita, Suvahini, Hamsavati, Kasa, Mahachakra, Chandravati, Kaveri, Surasa, Shakhavati, Indravati, Angaravahini, Haritoya, Somavarta, Shatahrada, Vanamala, Vasumati, Hamsa, Suparna, Panchaganga, Dhanushmati, Manivapra, Subrahmabhaga, Vilasini, Krishnatoya, Punyoda, Nagavati, Shiva, Shevalini, Manitata, Kshiroda, Varunavati, Vishnupadi, Mahanadi, Hiranyaskandhavaha, Suravati, Kamoda, Pataka—these are the great rivers. They are said to be equal to the Ganga, destroying sin from birth to death. There are countless minor rivers. Those who drink from these rivers live for ten thousand years. Rudra says: do not be devoted to me.
Rudra said: The nature of the Bhadrasva people has been described, and the Ketumala region explained in detail. Now, west of the Nishadha mountain, the rivers of the Kulachala region are mentioned. Thus, from the seven clan-mountains—Vishakha, Kambala, Jayanta, Krishna, Harita, Ashoka, Vardhamana—countless rivers arise. The inhabitants of these regions are named after them. For example: Sauragrama, Tasamtapa, Krtasurashravana, Kambalamaha, Heyachalakuta, Vasamula, Tapakrauncha, Krishna, Angamani, Pankajachuda, Malasomiya, Samudrantaka, Kurakunca, Suvarna, Tatakakuha, Shvetanga, Krishnapata, Vidaka, Pilakarni, Kamahisha, Kubja, Karanata, Mahotkata, Shukanasa, Gajabhuma, Kakuranjana, Manaha, Kinkisa, Parna, Bhaumaka, Coraka, Dhumajanma, Anga, Rajat, Ivana, Jivalau, Kilavacha, Sahanga, Madhureya, Shukeca, Keyashravana, Matta, Kasi, Godava, Amakulapanja, Varjja, Hamoda, Saalaka—these peoples drink from the rivers arising from their mountains. The principal rivers are: Plaksha, Mahakadamba, Manasi, Shyama, Sumedha, Bahula, Vivarna, Punkha, Mala, Darbhavati, Bhadranadi, Shukanadi, Pallava, Bhima, Prabhanjana, Kamba, Kushavati, Daksha, Kasavati, Tunga, Punyoda, Chandravati, Sumulavati, Kakudmini, Vishala, Karantaka, Pivari, Mahamaya, Mahishi, Manushi, Chanda. These are the main rivers; the rest are thousands of minor rivers.
Likewise, in Trishringa, with peaks of gems and gold and all kinds of jewels, from its northern peak to the southern ocean, are the Uttarakurus. Clothes and ornaments grow on the trees; there are milk-trees and milk-liquors. The ground is covered with jewels and golden sand. There, people descended from heaven live, with a lifespan of thirteen thousand years. To the west of this island, four thousand yojanas beyond, is Chandradvipa, circular and a thousand yojanas in diameter, belonging to the realm of the gods. In its center are two great mountains, Chandrakanta and Suryakanta. Between them flows the great river Chandravati, surrounded by many fruit trees and rivers. This is the Kuruvasha region. To its northern shore, five thousand yojanas beyond the ocean, is Suryadvipa, circular and a thousand yojanas in diameter, belonging to the realm of the gods. In its center is a great mountain, a hundred yojanas wide and equally high. From it flows the river Suryavarta. There, the sun is worshipped, and the people are of the sun's color, living for ten thousand years. To the west of this island, four thousand yojanas beyond, is Rudrakara island, circular and ten thousand yojanas in diameter. There is the auspicious seat of the wind, adorned with many jewels. There, the wind, in embodied form, resides. The people are golden-colored, living for five thousand years.
Shatamala, Tamraparni, Pushpavati, Utpalavati—these arise from Malaya mountain. Triyama, Rishikulya, Ikshula, Trivida, Langulini, Vamshavara—these are daughters of Mahendra. Rishika, Lusati, Mandagamini, Palashini—these arise from Shuktiman. These are the principal rivers from the clan-mountains; the rest are minor rivers. This is Jambudvipa, measuring a hundred thousand yojanas. Now, listen about Shakadwipa. Twice the size of Jambudvipa, surrounded by salt water, and encircled by the ocean twice over. There, the virtuous peoples live long, and the land is free from famine, old age, and disease. There are seven clan-mountains, and on both sides are the salt and milk oceans. To the east is the mountain Shailendra, called Udaya. Beyond it is Jaladhara, also called Chandra. Indra takes its water and makes it rain. Beyond it is Raivataka, also called Narada. From Narada mountain arises many diverse peoples, playing and called Siddhas. Beyond it is Shyama, also called Dundubhi, where the people are dark. Beyond it is Rajata, also called Shaka. Beyond it is Ambikeya, also called Vibhrājasa, also called Kesari. Then the wind blows. The mountain names are also the names of the regions: Udaya, Sukumara, Jaladhara, Kshema, Mahadruma—these are the principal ones, and others are named similarly. In its center is the Shaka tree, and there are seven great rivers, each with two names: Sukumari, Kumari, Nanda, Venika, Dhenu, Ikshumati, Gabhasti.
