देवदानवगन्धर्वयक्षराक्षसगुह्यकाः । पपुस्तदमृतप्रख्यं मधु जम्बूफलस्रवम् ।। ७७.
The gods, demons, gandharvas, yakshas, rakshasas, and guhyakas drank that juice, like nectar, which flowed from the fruit of the Jambu tree.
सा केतुर्दक्षिणे वर्षे जम्बूर्लोकेषु विश्रुता । यस्या नाम्ना समाख्याता जम्बूद्वीपेति मानवैः ।। ७७.
That Jambu is the banner in the southern region, renowned among the worlds; by its name, humans call the land Jambudvipa.
विपुलस्य च शैलस्य दक्षिणेन महात्मनः । जातः श्रृङ्गेति सुमहानश्वत्थश्चेति पादपः ।। ७७.
On the southern side of the great mountain Vipula, there grew a very large and noble fig tree, called Shringa.
महोच्छ्रायो महास्कन्धो नैकसत्त्वगुणालयः । कुम्भप्रमाणै रुचिरैः फलैः सर्वर्त्तुकैः शुभैः ।। ७७.
It is tall, with a massive trunk, a dwelling of many kinds of beings, and bears beautiful, auspicious fruits, delightful in all seasons, the size of water jars.
स केतुः केतुमालानां देवगन्धर्वसेवितः । केतुमालेति विख्यातो नाम्ना तत्र प्रकीर्तितः । तन्निबोधत विप्रेन्द्रा निरुक्तं नामकर्मणः ।। ७७.
That tree is the banner of the Ketumalas, attended by gods and gandharvas; it is famously called Ketumala by name there. Now, O best of brahmins, listen to the etymology of that name.
क्षीरोदमथने वृत्ते माला स्कन्धे निवेशिताः । इन्द्रेण चैत्यकेतोस्तु केतुमालस्ततः स्मृतः । तेन तच्चिह्नितं वर्षं केतुमालेति विश्रुतम् ।। ७७.
When the churning of the milk ocean was completed, garlands were placed on its trunk; and because Indra adorned the banner of the caitya with a garland, it became known as Ketumala. Therefore, that region marked by this sign is widely known as Ketumala.
सुपार्श्वस्योत्तरे श्रृङ्गे वटो नाम महाद्रुमः । न्यग्रोधो विपुलस्कन्धो यस्त्रियोजनमण्डलः ।। ७७.
On the northern peak of Supārshva stands a great banyan tree, called Vaṭa, with a broad trunk, spreading over a circle of three yojanas.
माल्यदामकलापैश्च विविधैस्तु समन्ततः । शाखाभिर्लम्बमानाभिः शोभितः सिद्धसेवितः ।। ७७.
Adorned all around with garlands, wreaths, and various clusters, its branches hang down beautifully, and it is frequented by perfected beings.
प्रलम्बकुम्भसदृशैर्हेमवर्णैः फलैः सदा । स ह्युत्तरकुरूणां तु केतुवृक्षः प्रकाशते ।। ७७.
It always bears golden fruits, resembling hanging water jars; this is the banner tree of the Uttarakurus.
सनत्कुमारावरजा मानसा ब्रह्मणः सुताः । सप्त तत्र महाभागाः कुरवो नाम विश्रुताः ।। ७७.
There, the seven illustrious Kurus, sons of Brahma, born from his mind and younger brothers of Sanatkumara, are renowned.
तत्र स्थिरगतैर्ज्ञानैर्विरजस्कैर्महात्मभिः । अक्षयः क्षयपर्यन्तो लोकः प्रोक्तः सनातनः ।। ७७.
In that place, the world is said to be eternal, lasting until the end of time, inhabited by great souls who are steadfast in knowledge and free from passion.
तेषां नामाङ्कितं वर्षं सप्तानां वै महात्मनाम् । दिवि चेह च विख्याता उत्तराः कुरवः सदा ।। ७७.
That region, named after those seven great souls, is always famous as the Uttarakurus, both in heaven and here on earth.
रुद्र उवाच । तथा चतुर्णां वक्ष्यामि शैलेन्द्राणां यथाक्रमम् । अनुविध्यानि रम्याणि विहङ्गैः कूजितानि च ।। ७८.
Rudra said: Now I shall describe, in order, the four chief mountains, delightful and filled with the songs of birds.
अनेकपक्षियुक्तात्मश्रृङ्गाणि सुबहूनि च । देवानां दिव्यनारीभिः समं क्रीडामयानि च ।। ७८.
They have many peaks, adorned with various birds, and are places of playful sport for the gods together with their celestial women.
किन्नरोद्गीतघुष्टानि शीतमन्दसुगन्धिभिः । पवनैः सेव्यमानानि रमणीयतराणि च ।। ७८.
Resounding with the songs of kinnaras, they are served by cool, gentle, fragrant breezes, and are even more beautiful.
चतुर्द्दिक्षु विराजन्ते नामतः श्रृणुतानघाः । पूर्वे चैत्ररथं नाम दक्षिणे गन्धमादनम् । प्रभावेण सुतोयानि नवखण्डयुतानि च ।। ७८.
Listen, O sinless ones, to their names as they shine in all four directions: in the east is Chaitraratha, in the south Gandhamadana, both possessing clear waters and divided into nine regions by their power.
वनषण्डांस्तथाक्रम्य देवता ललनायुताः । यत्र क्रीडन्ति चोद्देशे मुदा परमया युताः ।। ७८.
In those regions, the groves are filled with goddesses, where they play joyfully in various places.
अनुबन्धानि रम्याणि विहगैः कूजितानि च । रत्नोपकीर्णतिर्थानि महापुण्यजलानि च ।। ७८.
Those regions are delightful, filled with the songs of birds, adorned with sacred fords strewn with jewels, and blessed with waters of great merit.
अनेकजलयन्त्रैश्च नादितानि महान्ति च । शाखाभिर्लम्बमानाभी रुवत्पक्षिकुलालिभिः ।। ७८.
With many water devices, great sounds arise; branches hang down, resounding with flocks of birds and bees.
कमलोत्पलकह्लारशोभितानि सरांसि च । चतुर्षु तेषु गिरिषु नानागुणयुतेषु च ।। ७८.
The lakes, adorned with lotuses, blue lilies, and kahlaras, are found among those four mountains, each possessing various qualities.
अरुणोदं तु पूर्वेण दक्षिणे मानसं स्मृतम् । असितोदं पश्चिमे च महाभद्रं तथोत्तरे । कुमुदैः श्वेतकपिलैः कह्लारैर्भूषितानि च ।। ७८.
Arunoda lies to the east, Manasa is remembered in the south, Asitoda in the west, and Mahabhadra in the north; all are adorned with kumudas, white lotuses, and kahlaras.
अरुणोदयस्य ये शैलाः प्राच्या वै नामतः स्मृताः । तान् कीर्त्त्यमानांस्तत्त्वेन श्रृणुध्वं गदतो मम ।। ७८.
The mountains of Arunodayasya, known as the eastern ones, are remembered by name; listen as I recount them to you in truth.
विकङ्को मणिश्रृङ्गश्च सुपात्रश्चोपलो महान् । महानीलोऽथ कुम्भश्च सुबिन्दुर्मदनस्तथा ।। ७८.
Vikanka, Manishringa, Supatra, the great Upala, Mahanila, Kumbha, Subindu, and Madana are named.
वेणुनद्धः सुमेदाश्च निषधो देवपर्वतः । इत्येते पर्वतवराः पुण्याश्च गिरयोऽपरे ।। ७८.
Venunaddha, Sumeda, Nishadha, and Devaparvata—these are the foremost, sacred mountains; other excellent peaks also exist.
पूर्वेण मन्दरात् सिद्धाः पर्वताश्च मदायुताः । सरसो मानसस्येह दक्षिणेन महाचलाः ।। ७८.
East of Mandara are the Siddha mountains, filled with delight; to the south of Lake Manasa are the great hills.
ये कीर्त्तिता मया तुभ्यं नामतस्तान् निबोधत । शैलस्त्रिशिरश्चैव शिशिरश्चाचलोत्तमः ।। ७८.
Those whose names I have mentioned to you, listen and understand them: Shailastri, Shishira, and the supreme mountain.
कपिश्च शतमक्षश्च तुरगश्चैव सानुमान् । ताम्राहश्च विषश्चैव तथा श्वेतोदनो गिरिः ।। ७८.
Kapi, Shatamaksha, Turaga, Sānumān, Tāmrāha, Visha, and the mountain Shvetodana are named.
समूलश्चैव सरलो रत्नकेतुश्च पर्वतः । एकमूलो महाश्रृङ्गो गजमूलोऽपि शावकः ।। ७८.
Samula, Sarala, Ratnaketu, Ekamula, Mahashringa, Gajamula, and Shavaka are mountains.
पञ्चशैलश्च कैलासो हिमवानचलोत्तमः । उत्तरा ये महाशैलास्तान् वक्ष्यामि निबोधत ।। ७८.
Panchashaila, Kailasa, and Himavan, the supreme mountain; now hear of the great northern mountains.
कपिलः पिङ्गलो भद्रः सरसश्च महाचलः । कुमुदो मधुमांश्चैव गर्जनो मर्कटस्तथा ।। ७८.
Kapila, Pingala, Bhadra, Sarasa the great mountain, Kumuda, Madhuman, Garjana, and Markata are named.
