दुर्वासा उवाच । तद्वत् फाल्गुनमासे तु शुक्लपक्षे तु द्वादशीम् । उपोष्य प्रोक्तविधिना हरिमाराधयेत् सुधीः ।। ४२.
Durvasa said: In the same way, in the month of Phalguna, on the twelfth day of the bright fortnight, one should fast and worship Hari with the prescribed method, O wise one.
नरसिंहाय पादौ तु गोविन्दायेत्युरू तथा । कटिं विश्वभुजे पूज्य अनिरुद्धेत्युरस्तथा ।। ४२.
For Narasimha, worship the feet; for Govinda, the thighs; for Vishvabhuja, the waist; for Aniruddha, the arms.
कण्ठं तु शितिकण्ठाय पिङ्गकेशाय वै शिरः । असुरध्वंसनायेति चक्रं तोयात्मने तथा । शङ्खमित्येव संपूज्य गन्धपुष्पफलैस्तथा ।। ४२.
For Shitikaṇṭha, worship the neck; for Piṅgakeśa, the head; for the destroyer of demons, the discus; for the water-formed, the conch; worship each with sandal, flowers, and fruits.
तदग्रे घटमादाय सितवस्त्रयुगान्वितम् । तस्योपरि नृसिहं तु सौवर्णं ताम्रभाजने । सौवर्ण शक्तितः कृत्वा दारुवंशमयेऽपि वा ।। ४२.
In front, take a pot adorned with a pair of white cloths; above it, place a golden image of Narasimha in a copper vessel, made of gold if possible, or of wood or bamboo.
रत्नगर्भघटे स्थाप्य तं संपूज्य च मानवः । द्वादश्यां वेदविदुषे ब्राह्मणाय निवेदयेत् ।। ४२.
Having placed it in a jewel-encrusted pot and worshipped it, one should offer it to a Brahmin learned in the Vedas on the twelfth day.
एवं कृते फलं प्राप्तं यत् पुरा पार्थिवेन तु । तस्याहं संप्रवक्ष्यामि वत्सनाम्ना महामुने ।। ४२.
By doing this, the fruit obtained by the king of old—I will now tell you, O great sage, under the name Vatsa.
आसीत् किंपुरुषे वर्षे राजा परमधार्मिकः । भारतेति च विख्यातस्तस्य वत्सः सुतोऽभवत् ।। ४२.
In the land of Kimpurusha, there was a king of supreme righteousness, renowned as Bharata; his son was named Vatsa.
स शत्रुभिर्जितः संख्ये हृतकोशो द्विपादवान् । वनं प्रायात् सपत्नीको वसिष्ठस्याश्रमेऽवसत् ।। ४२.
Defeated in battle by his enemies, his treasury and elephants seized, he went to the forest with his wife and dwelled in the hermitage of Vasiṣṭha.
कालेन गच्छता सोऽथ वसिष्ठेन महर्षिणा । किं कार्यमिति स प्रोक्तो वसस्यस्मिन् महाश्रमे ।। ४२.
As time passed, the great sage Vasiṣṭha asked him, 'What is your purpose here in this great hermitage?'
राजोवाच । भगवन् हृतकोशोऽहं हृतराज्यो विशेषतः । शत्रुभिर्हतसंकल्पो भवन्तं शरणं गतः । उपदेशप्रदानेन प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ।। ४२.
The king said: 'Revered one, my treasury and kingdom have been taken, my resolve broken by enemies; I have come to you for refuge. By giving me instruction, please show your favor.'
एवमुक्तो वसिष्ठस्तु तस्येमां द्वादशीं मुने । विधिना प्रत्युवाचाथ सोऽपि सर्वं तथाऽकरोत् ।। ४२.
Thus addressed, Vasiṣṭha gave him this vow of Dvādaśī, according to the prescribed method; and he performed everything just as instructed.
तस्य व्रतान्ते भगवान् नारसिंहस्तुतोष ह । चक्रं प्रादाच्च शत्रूणां विध्वंसनकरं परम् ।। ४२.
At the conclusion of his vow, the blessed Nṛsiṃha was pleased and gave him a discus, supreme in destroying enemies.
तेनास्त्रेण स्वकं राज्यं जितवान् स नृपोत्तमः । राज्ये स्थित्वाऽश्वमेधानां सहस्त्रमकरोद् विभुः । अन्ते च विष्णुलोकाख्यं पदमाप च सत्तम ।। ४२.
With that weapon, the excellent king regained his own kingdom; remaining in his realm, he performed a thousand Aśvamedha sacrifices, and in the end attained the realm called Viṣṇuloka.
एषा धन्या पापहरा द्वादशी भवतो मुने । कथिता या प्रयत्नेन श्रुत्वा कुरु यथेप्सितम् ।। ४२.
This auspicious, sin-destroying Dvādaśī vow has been told to you, O sage; having heard it with care, do as you desire.
दुर्वासा उवाच । एवमेव मुने मासि चैत्रे संकल्प्य द्वादशीम् । उपोष्याराधयेत् पश्चात् देवदेवं जनार्दनम् ।। ४३.
Durvāsas said: 'In the same way, O sage, in the month of Chaitra, one should resolve to observe Dvādaśī, fast, and then worship Janārdana, the god of gods.'
वामनायेति पादौ तु विष्णवे कटिमर्चयेत् । वासुदेवेति जठरमुरः संपूर्णकाय च ।। ४३.
One should worship the feet as Vāmana, the waist as Viṣṇu, the abdomen, chest, and entire body as Vāsudeva.
कण्ठं विश्वकृते पूज्य शिरो वै व्योमरूपिणे । बाहू विश्वजिते पूज्य स्वनाम्ना शंखचक्रकौ ।। ४३.
The neck is to be worshipped as Viśvakṛt, the head as the one whose form is space, and the arms as Viśvajit, while the conch and discus are to be worshipped by their own names.
अनेन विधिनाभ्यर्च्य देवदेवं सनातनम् । प्राग्वदेवोत्तरं कुम्भं सयुग्मं पुरतो न्यसेत् ।। ४३.
Having worshipped the eternal god of gods in this manner, one should place two water pots in front, one to the east and one to the north.
प्रागुक्तपात्रे संस्थाप्य वामनं काञ्चनं बुधः । यथाशक्त्या कृतं ह्रस्वं सितयज्ञोपवीतिनम् ।। ४३.
A wise person should place a golden image of Vāmana in the previously mentioned vessel, made small according to ability, adorned with a white sacred thread.
कुण्डिकां स्थापयेत् पार्श्वे छत्रिकां पादुके तथा । अक्षमालां च संस्थाप्य वृसिकां च विशेषतः ।। ४३.
One should place a water pot at the side, an umbrella, sandals, a rosary, and especially a staff.
एतैरुपस्करैर्युक्तं प्रभाते स द्विजातये । दापयेत् प्रीयतां विष्णुर्ह्रस्वरूपीत्युदीरयेत् ।। ४३.
Equipped with these offerings, in the morning, one should give them to a twice-born, saying, 'May Viṣṇu, in his dwarf form, be pleased.'
मासनाम्ना तु संयुक्तं प्रादुर्भावविधानकम् । प्रीयतामिति सर्वत्र विधिरेष प्रकीर्तितः ।। ४३.
Joined with the name of the month and the rite of manifestation, everywhere this is declared as the rule, saying, 'May he be pleased.'
श्रूयते च पुरा राजा हर्यश्वः पृथिवीपतिः । अपुत्रः स तपस्तेपे पुत्रमिच्छंस्तपोधनम् ।। ४३.
It is heard that in ancient times there was a king named Haryaśva, lord of the earth, who, being childless, performed austerities desiring a son, O best of sages.
तस्यैव कुर्वतो व्युष्टिं पुत्रार्थे मुनिसत्तम । आजगाम हरिः पूर्वं द्विजरूपं समाश्रितः ।। ४३.
As he was performing the night vigil for the sake of a son, O eminent sage, Hari himself came first, taking the form of a twice-born.
उवाच तपसा राजन् किं ते व्यवसितं प्रभो । पुत्रार्थमिति प्रोवाच तं विप्रः प्रत्युवाच ह ।। ४३.
He spoke: 'By your austerity, O King, what have you resolved, O Lord?' The sage replied to him, saying, 'It is for the sake of a son.'
इदमेव विधानं तु कुरु राजन्नुवाच ह । एवमुक्त्वा तु राजानं क्षणादन्तर्हितः प्रभुः ।। ४३.
He said, 'This is the procedure, O King; perform it.' Having spoken thus to the king, the Lord vanished in an instant.
राजाऽपि तं चकाराशु मन्त्रवन्तं द्विजातये । दरिद्राय तथा प्रादात् ज्योतिर्गार्गाय धीमते ।। ४३.
The king quickly performed the ritual with mantras for the twice-born; he gave it to the poor and to the wise Jyotirgarga.
यथादितेरपुत्रायाः स्वयं पुत्रत्वमागतः । भगवंस्तेन सत्येन ममाप्यस्तु सुतो वरः ।। ४३.
Just as another's son attained sonship himself, O Lord, by that truth, may I too have a noble son.
अनेन विधिना दत्ते तस्य पुत्रोऽभवन्मुने । कुवलाश्व इति ख्यातश्चक्रवर्ती महाबलः ।। ४३.
By this method, when given, a son was born to him, O sage; he became known as Kuvalashva, a mighty emperor.
अपुत्रो लभते पुत्रमधनो लभते धनम् । भ्रष्टराज्यो लभेद् राज्यं मृतो विष्णुपुरं व्रजेत् ।। ४३.
A sonless man obtains a son, a poor man obtains wealth; one who has lost his kingdom regains it, and the dead reach Vishnu's abode.
