तपस्यतोऽतः स्थिरकीर्तिः पुराणो रजस्तमोध्वस्तगतिर्बभूव । वरो वरेण्यो वरदः प्रतापी कृष्णारुणः पुरुषः पिङ्गनेत्रः ।। ३३.
As he performed austerities, he became renowned, ancient, his course free from rajas and tamas; a bestower of boons, worthy of boons, a giver of blessings, powerful, dark-red in hue, a man with tawny eyes.
रुदन्नुक्तो ब्रह्मणा मा रुद त्वं रुद्रस्ततोऽसावभवत् पुराणः । नयस्व सृष्टिं विततस्वरूपां भवान् समर्थोऽसि महानुभाव ।। ३३.
Crying, he was addressed by Brahma: 'Do not weep; you are Rudra.' Thus he became the ancient one. 'Lead forth the creation, which has many forms; you are capable, O great one.'
इत्युक्तमात्रः सलिले ममज्जमग्ने ससर्जात्मभवाय दक्षः । कस्थे तदा देववरे वितेनुः सृष्टिं तु ते मानसा ब्रह्मजाताः ।। ३३.
As soon as this was said, he plunged into the waters; Daksha, born from himself, created. At that time, the excellent gods, born from Brahma's mind, extended creation in wood.
तस्यां ततायां तु सुराधिपे तु पैतामहं यज्ञवरं प्रकामम् । मग्नः पुरा यत्सलिले स रुद्रः उत्सृज्य विश्वं तु सुरान् सिसृक्षुः ।। ३३.
In that expanded creation, O lord of the gods, the supreme sacrifice of the Grandsire was performed; long ago, Rudra, immersed in the waters, abandoned the world, desiring to create the gods.
सुस्त्राव यज्ञं सुरसिद्धयक्षानुपागतान् क्रोधवशं जगाम । मन्युं प्रदीप्तं परिभाव्य केन सृष्टं जगन्मां व्यतिरिच्य मोहात् ।। ३३.
He poured forth the sacrifice; the gods, siddhas, and yakshas approached, but he fell under the sway of anger. Considering his blazing wrath, he thought: 'By whom, out of delusion, has this world been created, surpassing me?'
हा हेति चोक्ते ज्वलनार्चिषस्तु तत्राभवन् क्षुद्रपिशाचसङ्घा वेतालभूतानि च योगिसङ्घाः ।। ३३.
When he cried out 'Ha! He!' flames blazed forth, and there arose hosts of small piśācas, vetālas, bhūtas, and groups of yogis.
घनं यदा तैर्विततं वियच्च भूमिश्च सर्वाश्च दिशश्च लोकाः । तदा स सर्वज्ञतया चकार धनुश्चतुर्विंशतिहस्तमात्रम् ।। ३३.
When the sky, earth, all directions, and worlds were filled by them, then, in his omniscience, he fashioned a bow measuring twenty-four cubits.
गुणं त्रिवृत्तं च चकार रोषादादत्त दिव्ये च धनुर्गुणं च । ततश्च पूष्णो दशनानविध्यद् भगस्य नेत्रे वृषणौ क्रतोश्च ।। ३३.
Out of anger, he made a triple-twisted bowstring and took up the divine bow and string; then he struck out the teeth of Pūṣan, the eyes of Bhaga, and the testicles of Kratu.
स विद्धबीजो व्यपयात्क्रतुश्च मार्गं वायुर्धारधन् यज्ञवाटात् । देवाश्च सर्वे पशुपतिमुपेयुर्जग्मुश्च सर्वे प्रणतिं भवस्य ।। ३३.
That sacrificial priest, his seed pierced, departed from the sacrificial ground like the wind, bearing the stream of life; and all the gods approached Paśupati and all offered obeisance to Bhava.
आगम्य तत्रैव पितामहस्तु भवं प्रतीतः संपरिष्वज्य देवान् । भक्त्योपेतान् वीक्षयद् देवदेवान् विज्ञानमन्तः कुरु वीरबाहो ।। ३३.
Then, having arrived there, the Grandfather (Brahmā) joyfully embraced Bhava and the gods, who were filled with devotion, and gazed upon the Lord of gods, saying: 'O strong-armed one, understand the inner knowledge.'
रुद्र उवाच । सृष्टः पूर्वं भवताऽहं न चेमे कस्मान्न भागं परिकल्पयन्ति । यज्ञोद्भवं तेन रुषा मयेमे हृतज्ञाना विकृता देवदेव ।। ३३.
Rudra said: 'I was created by you before, yet in these sacrifices why do they not assign me a share? Because of this, O Lord of gods, these gods, born of sacrifice, have become deluded and distorted by anger.'
ब्रह्मा उवाच । देवाः शंभुं स्तुतिभिर्ज्ञानहेतोर् यजध्वमुच्चैरसुराश्च सर्वे । येन रुद्रो भगवांस्तोषमेति सर्वज्ञता तोषमात्रस्य च स्यात् ।। ३३.
Brahmā said: 'O gods, praise Śambhu with hymns for the sake of knowledge, and all you Asuras as well; by whom the blessed Rudra is pleased, to him comes omniscience and the fruit of satisfaction.'
इत्युक्तास्तेन ते देवाः स्तुतिं चक्रुर्महात्मनः ।। ३३.
Thus addressed by him, the gods offered praise to the great-souled one.
देवा ऊचुः । नमो देवातिदेवाय त्रिनेत्राय महात्मने । रक्तपिङ्गलनेत्राय जटामुकुटधारिणे ।। ३३.
The gods said: 'Salutations to the god above gods, the three-eyed great soul, whose eyes are red and tawny, who wears matted locks as a crown.'
भूतवेतालजुष्टाय महाभोगोपवीतिने । भीमाट्टहासवक्त्राय कपर्दिन् स्थाणवे नमः ।। ३३.
Salutations to the one attended by spirits and goblins, adorned with a great serpent as a sacred thread, whose mouth is wide with a terrible laugh, O matted-haired, O immovable one.
पूष्णो दन्तविनाशाय भगनेत्रहने नमः । भविष्यवृषचिह्नाय महाभूतपते नमः ।। ३३.
Salutations to the destroyer of Pūṣan's tooth, to the one who struck out Bhaga's eye, to the future bearer of the bull-mark, to the great lord of beings.
भविष्यत्रिपुरान्ताय तथान्धकविनाशिने । कैलासवरवासाय करिकृत्तिनिवासिने ।। ३३.
Salutations to the future destroyer of Tripura, to the slayer of Andhaka, to the one who dwells in the best of Kailāsa, to the wearer of an elephant hide.
विकरालोद्र्ध्वकेशाय भैरवाय नमो नमः । अग्निज्वालाकरालाय शशिमौलिकृते नमः ।। ३३.
Salutations again and again to the fierce one with disheveled hair, to Bhairava, to the one terrible as blazing fire, to the one who wears the moon as a crest.
भविष्यकृतकापालिव्रताय परमेष्ठिने । तथा दारुवनध्वंसकारिणे तिग्मशूलिने ।। ३३.
Salutations to the supreme lord, the future skull-bearer, the vow-keeper, to the destroyer of the Daru forest, to the wielder of the sharp spear.
कृतकङ्कणभोगीन्द्र नीलकण्ठ त्रिशूलिने । प्रचण्डदण्डहस्ताय वडवाग्निमुखाय च ।। ३३.
Salutations to the one adorned with serpent bracelets, blue-throated, trident-bearing, holding a fierce staff, and with the mouth of submarine fire.
वेदान्तवेद्याय नमो यज्ञमूर्ते नमो नमः । दक्षयज्ञविनाशाय जगद्भयकराय च ।। ३३.
Salutations to the one known through Vedānta, to the embodiment of sacrifice, to the destroyer of Dakṣa's sacrifice, to the one who brings fear to the world.
विश्वेश्वराय देवाय शिवशंभुभवाय च । कपर्दिने करालाय महादेवाय ते नमः ।। ३३.
Salutations to the lord of the universe, to the god, to Śiva, Śambhu, Bhava, to the matted-haired, the fierce, the great god.
एवं देवैः स्तुतः शंभुरुग्रधन्वा सनातनः । उवाच देवदेवोऽहं यत्करोमि तदुच्यताम् ।। ३३.
Thus praised by the gods, Śambhu, the eternal wielder of the mighty bow, said: 'O gods, I am the Lord of gods. Tell me what I should do.'
देवा ऊचुः । वेदशास्त्राणि विज्ञानं देहि नो भव माचिरम् । यज्ञं सरहस्यं नो यदि तुष्टोऽसि नः प्रभो ।। ३३.
The gods said: 'O Bhava, grant us the Vedas, the scriptures, and knowledge without delay; reveal to us the secret of sacrifice, if you are pleased with us, O Lord.'
महादेव उवाच । भवन्तः पशवः सर्वे भवन्तु सहिता इति । अहं पतिर्वो भवतां ततो मोक्षमवाप्स्यथ । तथेति देवास्तं प्राहुस्ततः पशुपतिर्भवत् ।। ३३.
Mahādeva said: 'All of you shall become my cattle, together; I shall be your Lord, and thus you will attain liberation.' The gods replied, 'So be it,' and thus he became Paśupati.
ब्रह्मा पशुपतिं प्राह प्रसन्नेनान्तरात्मना । चतुर्द्दशी ते देवेश तिथिरस्तु न संशयः ।। ३३.
Brahmā addressed Paśupati with a gladdened heart: 'O Lord of gods, the fourteenth lunar day shall be yours, without doubt.'
तस्यां तिथौ भवन्तं ये यजन्ते श्रद्धयान्विताः । उपोष्य पश्चाद्भुञ्जीयाद्गोधूमान्नेन वै द्विजान् ३३.
On that lunar day, those who worship you with faith, after fasting, should eat wheat food together with the twice-born.
एवमक्तस्तदा रुद्रो ब्रह्मणाऽव्यक्तजन्मना । दन्तान् नेत्रे फले प्रादाद्भगपूष्णोः क्रतोरपि । परिज्ञानं च सकलं स प्रादाच्च सुरेष्वपि ।। ३३.
Thus, at that time, Rudra, who was fasting, received from Brahma—the one born from the unmanifest—the teeth, eyes, and fruit from the sacrifice of Bhaga and Pushan, and he also received complete knowledge among the gods.
एवं रुद्रस्य संभूतिः संभूता ब्रह्मणः पुरा । अनेनैव प्रयोगेन देवानां पतिरुच्यते ।। ३३.
In this way, Rudra's origin came about from Brahma in ancient times; by this very procedure, he is called the lord of the gods.
यश्चैनं श्रृणुयान्नित्यं प्रातरुत्थाय मानवः । सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो रुद्रलोकमवाप्नुयात् ।। ३३.
Whoever, rising in the morning, listens daily to this, becomes free from all sins and attains the world of Rudra.
