Varaha Purana

यः पुनः सततं शृण्वन्नैरन्तर्येण बुद्धिमान्

whoever, moreover, listens constantly and without interruption, with understanding,

सर्वयज्ञेषु यत्पुण्यं सर्वदानेषु यत्फलम्

the merit that is obtained from all sacrifices and the fruit of all gifts—

तत्प्राप्नोति न सन्देहो वराहवचनं यथा

that is attained; there is no doubt, just as the words of Varaha declare.

अपुत्रस्य भवेत्पुत्रः सपौत्रस्य सुपौत्रकः 217.

For one without a son, a son will be born; for one with a grandson, a great-grandson will be born.

तस्य नारायणो देवः सन्तुष्टः स्याद्धि सर्वदा

For him, the god Narayana will always be pleased.

श्रुत्वा तु पूजयेच्छास्त्रं यथा विष्णुं सनातनम्

Having heard, one should worship the scripture just as one worships the eternal Vishnu.

यथाशक्ति नृपो ग्रामैः पूजयेच्च वसुन्धरे

A king should, according to his ability, worship the earth with villages.

सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो विष्णुसायुज्यमाप्नुयात्

Freed from all sins, he attains union with Vishnu.

अथ पुराणपठनादिविषयानुक्रमणिकाध्यायः वीरेश्वरेण सह माधवभद्रनाम्ना काश्यां वराहकथितं लिखितं पुराणम्

Now, the chapter on the sequence of topics such as the reading of the Purana: the Purana spoken by Varaha in Kashi, together with Viresvara, named Madhavabhadra, was written down.

वराहस्य पुराणस्य वृत्तान्तान्प्रब्रवीम्यहम्

I will recount the accounts of the Varaha Purana.

आदिसृष्टिस्ततः प्रोक्ता चरितं दुर्जनस्य च

First, the original creation was described, and also the deeds of the wicked.

आदिवृत्तान्तकथने सरमाख्यानमेव च

In the narration of the original events, there is also the story of Sarama.

अश्विनोरपि चोत्पत्ति गौर्युत्पत्तिस्तथैव च

The origin of the Ashvins, and likewise the origin of Gauri, are also told.

स्कन्दोत्पत्तिश्च भानोश्च उत्पत्तिः समुदाहृता

The birth of Skanda and also the birth of Bhanu are recounted.

धनदस्य तथोत्पत्तिः परापरविनिर्णयः

The origin of Dhanada is likewise told, and the discernment of the higher and lower.

सोमोत्पत्तिरहस्यं च क्षितेश्चापि समासतः

The secret of the origin of Soma, and also, in brief, of the Earth.

ततः सत्यतपोपाख्या मत्स्यद्वादशिका तथा

Then the account of Satyatapa, the twelvefold vow of Matsya as well.

नृसिंहद्वादशी चापि वामनद्वादशी तथा 218.

Also the twelvefold vow of Narasimha, and likewise the twelvefold vow of Vamana.

कृष्णद्वादशिका चापि बुद्धद्वादशिका तथा

Also the twelvefold vow of Krishna, and likewise the twelvefold vow of Buddha.

ततो व्रतं धरण्याश्च गीतागस्त्यस्य चोत्तमा

Then the vow of the Earth, and the supreme vow of Agastya as sung.

शुभव्रतं धन्यव्रतं कान्तिव्रतमतः स्मृतम्

The auspicious vow, the blessed vow, and thus the vow of radiance is remembered.

शान्तिव्रतं कामव्रतमारोग्यव्रतमेव च

The vow of peace, the vow of desire, and also the vow of health.

पुराणस्तवनं चैव नारायणेश्वरेण च

And the praise of the ancient one, and of Narayana Ishvara.

ततो भुवनकोशस्य वर्णनं समुदाहृतम्

Then the description of the cosmic egg is recounted.

भारतादिसमुद्देशः सृष्टिसम्भाग एव च

The section on Bharata and others, and also the division of creation.

शक्तिमाहात्म्यकथनं महिषासुरघातनम्

The narration of the greatness of Shakti, and the slaying of Mahishasura.

श्वेतोपाख्यानमत्रोक्तं तिलधेनुविधिस्ततः

Here the story of Shveta is told, then the rite of the sesame cow.

ततश्च शर्क्कराधेनोर्मधुधेनोस्ततः परम् 218.

Then the sugar-cow, and after that the honey-cow, in due order.

धान्यधेनुश्च भगवच्छास्त्रलक्षणमेव च

And the grain-cow, and the characteristics of the divine scriptures.
