As the assembly watched in awe, he vanished from their sight, yet remained visible, standing high in the sky. From this lofty vantage, he addressed them with words resonant and clear. “By your curse, my body has been affected; now, I have departed from here,” he declared, his presence both ethereal and commanding. “Had I remained with my body, established here in this place, my horns would have been left behind in this forest, which is of a phlegmatic nature. “Still, O immortals, prosperity will flourish here—this is certain. All the sacred places on earth, and every lake up to the ocean, have their own sanctity, yet here, at the auspicious foot of the lord of mountains, Himavat, I shall appear again. My head will blaze with radiant splendor, my form will be four-faced and resplendent. In the dreadful lake of serpents, I will dwell within the waters. “When one born in the lineage of Vṛṣṇi, bearing the discus of Kṛṣṇa, strikes down the mountains, that region will then be overtaken by foreigners. Yet, in that land, those established by the brāhmaṇas will reside, and the kings will institute the worship of the liṅga. The righteous kings will uphold justice, and all beings there will perpetually worship me. “Those who journey to Śivapura will behold me, their sins burned away by that vision. Know that my sacred field here extends fourteen yojanas in breadth. The waters of this place are remembered as a hundred times purer than those of the Bhāgīrathī. Men who depart from their bodies here, without doubt, ascend to my world. Those who have sought refuge in the place of Puruhūta dwell there, secure and blessed. “Sages, celestial nymphs, and yakshas—all are beguiled by my maya in this place. It has become a field of accomplishment for those devoted to austerities. The wise proclaim that this field surpasses even Kurukshetra in sanctity. From here, all the foremost rivers arise, beginning with the Ganga. Every spring is sacred, every lofty rock is holy. “This place is known as Shaileśvara, where my body is established. The Bhagirathi, swift-flowing, burns away the sins of men. By bathing or immersing in her waters, one uplifts seven generations. Those who bathe here and depart from life ascend to heaven, never to be reborn. Pleased, I rescue them from the ocean of worldly existence. “Whoever, pure, faithful, and free from envy, bathes here for my ablution attains the same fruit as that gained by offering Agnihotra. There is a water source called Mriga-shringa, always dear to the sages; whatever sin has been committed through life is instantly destroyed there. By merely bathing in this sacred spot, one obtains the fruit of an Agnishtoma sacrifice. No sinful or ungrateful man can ever attain this place. “Men who bathe in the Vagmati attain the highest state. Those who, purified, behold me after bathing in the waters of Vagmati—by my power, all their sins are destroyed. Indeed, those who, purified, behold me after bathing in the waters of Vagmati, are blessed beyond measure.” Thus, his words echoed, bestowing blessings and revealing the sanctity of the land and its waters, promising liberation and prosperity to the faithful who seek him there.
