When the accumulated karmas of wrongdoers are finally exhausted, they are granted human birth once more. Yet, even then, their suffering is not at an end. Many perish before they ever see the light of day, dying within the very womb that bore them, while others meet their end as children, their lives cut short before they can truly begin. Some fall from trees, some are struck down by weapons, others are swept away by violent winds or consumed by fire. Such dreadful fates befall those who, in previous lives, committed the grievous sin of killing their own mother, father, friends, relatives, or kin. They experience the pain of taking life, just as they once inflicted it upon others. Those who in their past lives were root-cutters, poisoners, or arsonists, who sowed discord through slander or false accusations, who delighted in causing distress or acted with fierce cruelty—these are the ones who are cast into the torments of hell. There, they are cooked in agony, suffering the consequences of their deeds. When their karmas are spent and they are born again as humans, their bodies bear the marks of their past: their ears or noses may be cut off, and they endure repeated suffering, both physical and mental. The most wicked among men are afflicted with severe abdominal diseases. Some are born maimed in one limb, or with a single eye, or with deformed nails, or plagued by various diseases. Others suffer from leprosy, their flesh falling away, or from white leprosy, and all these conditions arise according to their own deeds. Some are tormented by pain in the womb, pain in the eyes, asthma, pain in the heart, or pain in the private parts. In this way, they are beset by many harsh and terrible diseases. The messengers of justice are charged with punishing, in proper order, those who speak falsely. There are four kinds of false speech: whether the matter is secret or not, whether it is slander or open reviling, speech that destroys affection, that is harsh or betrays broken conduct, speech lacking proper tone, countless in its forms, and ultimately meaningless. Those who babble unjustly, who are harsh, deceitful, and corrupt others with their words, are especially condemned. Some cannot bear to hear the good qualities of others praised. Such people are reborn among lower creatures, taking many forms as insects and birds. There, evil-doers are cooked for a long and dreadful time, suffering intensely. They are despised, unrecognized, their minds lost and without reputation. Abandoned by friends and rejected by their own kin, they bear not only their own sins but also the sins committed by others. This is the relentless succession of suffering for those who speak falsely. They commit acts of theft, seizing what is not theirs by force, and oppress all people, especially the wretched and those who dwell in the villages, deceiving them. At the appointed time, those who steal and cause suffering in the world—who are cunning in making false accusations and bring harm in legal matters, who misappropriate deposits and cause delusion—are established again and again in dreadful hells. When their evil actions are finally exhausted, they are once more granted human birth. Yet, even then, they are born in lands plagued by fear—fear of thieves, fear of hunger, or fear of the king. These are places afflicted by calamities, where greed reigns in the cities, and suffering abounds. Such souls are tormented by the very act of dwelling in the womb, and when they are born, their bodies show the marks of their suffering: their veins exposed, their forms deformed, or afflicted by diseases of the wind. Thus, the cycle of suffering continues for those who act with cruelty, deceit, and harm, until their karmas are finally cleansed.
