O Earth, listen as I reveal the sacred procedures by which one may worship Me through forms fashioned from copper, bell-metal, silver, gold, or tin. Each material has its own prescribed method, and through these, another form of My worship arises upon the altar, where offerings are joyfully accepted. A householder, guided by desire and mindful of his own family, may worship Me in this way. Know without doubt, O Earth, that by these rites, I am firmly established in the world. Whoever performs My rituals, whether by intoning the mantras or by following the prescribed rules, I, with a heart full of pleasure, grant each the fruit they seek. My devotee, ever steadfast and diligent in action, need only offer a handful of water to Me to bring Me supreme delight. One who, with a tranquil mind, continually contemplates Me attains My favor. All of this, most secret and carefully guarded, is now revealed to you. When this teaching is heard, one should consecrate it on an auspicious day, under the proper constellation. Then, let one mix pañcagavya—the five sacred products of the cow—with fragrant substances and pure water. With a focused mind, recite the mantra: “You, the creator of all worlds, by whose grace the worlds exist—the cause of causes, of fierce energy, radiant, the Great Person—salutations, again and again.” With this very mantra, taking four vessels, install My presence. Next, offer this invocation: “Om. Having obtained Varuṇa, the ocean, and having been duly worshipped, the self becomes most pleased; Agni, Earth, and all the waters—because of whom all these always exist—I bow.” Thus, after bathing the image as prescribed and remaining devoted to My rites, offer aguru, incense blended with camphor, and saffron. After the incense, present yellow cloth, reciting: “Always pleased with yellow cloth, when He is pleased, the world is pleased.” Offer the cloth with reverence, as is proper, and then, following the previously described procedure, present a gift vessel. Recite: “May there be peace for the gods, for Brahmins, warriors, and people. May the god Parjanya send rain, and may the earth be filled with crops.” Having thus worshipped the devotees of Bhagavān, honor the Brahmins in turn. Speak without error, and then perform the proper dismissal. Worship them with garments, ornaments, and decorations, as befits their station. Whoever worships the teacher with devotion and according to the rite brings great merit. When pleased, even a king grants a village with reluctance, but by My own auspicious command, as set forth in My scriptures, whoever establishes Me by this procedure obtains My grace. During My worship, drops of water fall upon My paths, signifying My presence. Thus, O Earth, I have described to you the establishment of the clay image. Now, hear of the establishment of worship through a copper image. Having fashioned a beautiful and radiant form from copper, bring it into the dwelling and install it facing north. Purify it with water mixed with all fragrances and the five sacred products of the cow. Recite the mantra: “He who is essence, you remain in copper as the eye.” By this very mantra, O illustrious one, install the image. When the night has passed and the sun has risen, let the Brahmins gather and recite the Vedas, sanctifying the worship and fulfilling its purpose. Thus ends the sacred instructions for the establishment of clay and copper worship as revealed in the glorious Varaha Purana.
