In ages past, there existed a holy and divine image, radiant and celestial in form. By the power of his mind, Kapila—the foremost among sages—created this auspicious image of Vārāhī. Indra, king of the gods, worshipped Kapila with reverence, and when the beautiful one received a boon, Indra was filled with joy. From Kapila, Indra received the supreme divine knowledge. At that time, a mighty being set forth to conquer heaven, entering Indra's world. Ravana, the powerful Rakshasa, defeated the gods and even Indra himself. Ravana entered a house adorned with jewels, but there he became deluded by Kapila. O Damodara, Hrishikesha, slayer of Hiranyaksha—salutations to you, O Narayana, in the form of a tortoise. Ravana was overwhelmed, unable to look upon the divine or even ask for anything, yet he bowed in devotion, seeking grace. The god Janardana, lord of the worlds, assumed a gentle form. Ravana, seeing the god's small body, declared he could not lift him but wished to take him to the unsurpassed city of Lanka. Hearing Kapila's words, Ravana spoke: unwavering devotion arose in him upon seeing the divine. As his devotion grew, his form became light, and he brought the deity to Lanka, placing him in his own house. Later, Rama, the lord of Ayodhya, slew Ravana, the foremost among Rakshasas, and consecrated Vibhishana as the ruler of Lanka. Sri Rama then said, "Give me the deity, the Rakshasa who has come today from the world of Indra." Day after day, Rama worshipped the god in the form of Varaha. He offered Kapila, who had a divine form, and established him in Ayodhya, worshipping him at that time. For the purpose of killing Lavana, Rama sent Shatrughna, who set out with a fourfold army towards Mathura. After slaying Lavana, Shatrughna entered the city of Mathura, accompanied by twenty-six thousand Brahmins accomplished in the Vedas and Vedangas—indeed, when one Brahmin is fed, it is as if a crore are fed. Hearing of Lavana's death, Raghava spoke, and Shatrughna replied, "Grant me this deity, if you are indeed a giver of boons to me." Rama responded, "Take, O Shatrughna, the divine god in the form of Varaha." Blessed are the people of Mathura, who always behold Kapila. Shatrughna, being anointed, removes all sin, destroys all sin, and grants liberation. Taking the deity, Shatrughna went to the city of Mathura, and there, in the center, Raghava installed and worshipped him.
