In the sacred land of Mathura, the fruits of bathing in holy waters and offering gifts are truly wondrous—there, one attains whatever is desired through such acts. Thus concludes the praise of bathing and other meritorious deeds at Malayarjuna and other holy places, as extolled in the glorious Varaha Purana, especially concerning the greatness of Mathura. Now, let me tell you of the manifestation and glory of Mathura’s sacred places. The region of Mathura, beloved to me, extends for twenty yojanas. During the rainy season, one should reside in a place within Mathura that brings joy to the heart, for across the seven continents, there are many holy sites and abodes, but Mathura holds a special sanctity. O Earth, when I, the Lord, awaken from sleep and reveal my lotus-like face upon the earth in Mathura, all the inhabitants of this city become recipients of liberation. Those who bathe again in the sacred Kalindi river are honored in my divine world. Whoever circumambulates Kesava in Mathura, carrying a vessel filled with ghee and adorned in complete garments, is especially blessed. Within Mathura, there is a domain five yojanas in breadth and five in length, abundant with all desired enjoyments and attended by groups of apsaras. Those who merit it ascend there daily, their forms adorned with a radiant aura. O Devi, know that the pious always long for this; the merit of deeds performed on earth brings such rewards. In the houses of the virtuous, humans are born under my protection, and I safeguard their fields, destroying all sin. Even beings such as animals, ghosts, demons, and obstructive spirits do not trouble those devoted to me. For their protection, I have appointed the guardians of the directions, O beautiful-faced one: Indra protects the east, Yama the south, and Kubera, mighty and valorous, the north. Whoever builds a house or palace in Mathura, O greatly fortunate one, and especially near a pond of pure water, is blessed. If one gives up their life there after bathing, O Earth, hear of the wonders that follow: the waters in Mathura are miraculous—warm in winter, cool in summer, never swelling in the rains nor diminishing in the heat. At every step in Mathura, the fruit of pilgrimage is found. During the rainy season, one should bathe diligently at the prominent holy sites and also at the sacred currents and confluences of rivers. There exists, too, a supreme and divine field named Mucukunda. Bathing in its pond, a person attains the very water they desire. All the sins committed in this life and in former births are washed away here. For one whose devotion is to Janardana, what need is there for many mantras? Having circumambulated the sacred places, O Devi, whoever rests content, and upon seeing Hari awakened in Mathura—especially on the ninth day of the month of Kumuda—are greatly blessed. Even those burdened by the gravest sins—a slayer of a Brahmin, a drinker of liquor, a killer of a cow, or one who has broken vows—on the eighth day, if they reach Mathura, brush their teeth, wear washed garments, bathe well, and observe a vow of silence, find redemption in this sacred land. Thus, the glory of Mathura shines forth—a place where the Lord’s presence brings liberation, where holy waters purify, and where the devoted are ever protected and blessed.
