O Devi, let me tell you of the wondrous sanctity of Mathura and its sacred places. Whoever bathes in these holy waters is honored in the realm of Brahma, for these five places are renowned as destroyers of even the greatest sins. Within Mathura stands the deity Gopīśvara, the mighty destroyer of transgressions. Here, Hari himself crafted forms of the gopis for his divine play. It was at this very time that the cart was broken, along with the hut filled with pots and jars, all enveloped in righteousness and skillfully concealed by pretense. Hari performed the consecration of the god, adorning him in the attire of a cowherd. Bathed by the circle of cowherd women, he wore golden earrings, shining with celestial beauty. There, Mātali installed and worshipped the god, the lord of the cowherds, bestowing reverence upon him. In this sacred region lies the well called Saptasāmudrika, whose waters are pure and refreshing. Through his actions, Hari delivered seventy-seven lineages of ancestors, satisfying them for countless hundreds of millions of years. If one meets their end in this place, they attain the same realm as Indra, and those aspiring for Brahma’s world may reach it from the midst of the lord of cowherds. A man who comes here delivers ten ancestors before and ten after himself. When he relinquishes his life in this holy place, he goes to my world, O Devi. On the southern side of Mathura is the Phālgunaka field, an exceedingly rare and holy place. Whoever performs consecration there rejoices together with the gods. Nearby is Tālavana, guarded by the demon Dhenuka, and a pond with clear water adorned with blue lotuses, enhancing the beauty of the region. There is also Saṃpīṭhaka, supreme in this field of mine. Those who stay a single night and bathe here, upon departing from life, attain my world. Indeed, by virtue gained here, I have worshipped the auspicious Sun. In this place, the Sun was seen holding a lotus in his hand, and on the seventh day of the dark fortnight, he always remains present. For those who worship here, nothing is difficult to obtain; the Sun bestows all blessings. Whether man or woman, each attains the full result without fail. Mighty Bhishma, having placed the Sun before him, attained this divine state. Here, through bathing and giving, one obtains the desired result. Thus concludes the chapter extolling the greatness of bathing and other sacred acts at Malayarjuna and other holy places, revealing the glory of Mathura. Now, let me explain the manifestation of Mathura’s sacred places. My region of Mathura extends for twenty yojanas. In the rainy season, one should reside in that place which brings joy to the soul. Across the seven continents, there are holy abodes, but Mathura stands supreme. When I awaken from sleep upon the earth in Mathura, O Earth, and when my lotus-like face is seen awakened, all inhabitants of Mathura become recipients of liberation. Whoever bathes again in the Kalindi is honored in my world. And by whomever Kesava is circumambulated in Mathura, blessings and liberation are assured.
